Partners Matt Kelly and Josh “Skinny” DeCarolis are proud to offer Mothers & Sons, a trattoria in downtown Durham featuring regional Italian food with seasonal sensibility. DeCarolis introduces the first restaurant in the South to focus on fatta a mano —handmade pasta.
Mothers and Sons offers antipasti dishes such seasonal bruschettas or smoked octopus. Choose from primi dishes like the bucatini al amatriciana, squid ink tonnarelli or rigatoni alla norma and secondi dishes like the bistecca alla floretina and eggplant parmigiana. Dishes are made with seasonal ingredients so menus may change depending on when you visit. An extensive Italian wine list, dozens of amari as well as an imaginative cocktail list with an italian flair assures there will be a drink that will complement your meal perfectly.

Our second time at Mothers and Sons and again it did not disappoint! Great food and wine. Nice way to have dinner before a concert at DPAC.

Servers and staff were lovely; thanks for the candle in dessert for my friebds bday! Food was terrible! Grilled octopus was literally the worst I’ve ever had; chewy and hard to eat! Squid ink pasta was average at best and the fish dish in a broth was just ok/fine. All that for such high prices! Maybe it was a “bad day” in the kitchen but I’m never going back nor ever recommending this place!

Food was great, but our server was very aloof and didn’t seem to want to serve us. Not sure if it is because we looked young (and young people often don’t tip well) but we didn’t appreciate the poor service when other tables around us were getting checked on and seemed to be treated well.

Service was top-notch and the food was delicious. Love how this restaurant serves complimentary bread with olive oil which so many restaurants charge for these days. And they also have real votive candles on the tables, not the battery-operated ones. All these small touches add to the whole dining experience in such a wonderful way. On this visit we had the Fritto Misto, Cavatelli Pugliesi and the Squid Ink Tonnarelli. Each was excellent with lots of flavor and plenty of protein. We love this restaurant, and they never disappoint.

We love the interesting take Mothers & Sons has on Italian cuisine. Our wine, cocktails, focaccia, appetizer, entrees, desserts were delectable! Service was also excellent.

We had a lovely dinner with teenage grandsons to celebrate a high school graduation. They are adventurous eaters. All the food was delicious, servers were attentive in just the right way.
