About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Great for creative cocktails
Moon Rabbit is a highly-regarded Vietnamese restaurant situated in the heart of Washington D.C., drawing inspiration from the virtuous rabbit depicted in the Buddhist Jataka tale. Led by acclaimed Chef Kevin Tien, the restaurant embodies an innovative approach to Vietnamese cuisine, showcasing a menu that is both unique and complex. Chef Tien's main objective is to pay tribute to his heritage as a first-generation Asian American, using Moon Rabbit as a platform for expressing his love for Vietnamese culture and food.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Kevin Tien

From the OpenTable editors: Come to the Moon Rabbit reboot for chef Kevin Tien’s singular approach to Vietnamese fine dining. In a modern, library-like space, his ambitious menu—think Mực Nhồi Thị (squid-stuffed boudin) and Cá Viên (barbecued monkfish with collard greens)—is both rooted in his Asian heritage and Louisiana upbringing while boundary-pushing, for a singular experience every visit.

I don't usually write reviews, but I had such a beautiful experience at Moon Rabbit. Wanting to enjoy Viet cuisine in DC, I asked a colleague for recommendations, and they had suggested this restaurant---raving about the canh chua drink, quail dish, and pork floss dessert that sent them into an elevated experience of Vietnamese fusion cuisine. I started with the canh chua drink--absolutely refreshing and on point with what the soup should taste like. For dinner, I decided on the "tour of Vietnam" menu because everything looked too delicious to choose for myself. Definitely should be enjoyed by a larger party, but staff tried to be accommodating for my table of one. The entire meal was delicious. Bites were decadent, creative, and special. As a child of Vietnamese refugees, many of the dishes evoked flashbacks of nostalgia. The crudo and wrapped wagyu were especially nostalgic. I was honestly bursting with so much joy and delight with each bite! Throughout the night, the staff was extremely attentive and kind. It was a magical experience that felt close to home.

We had a date night with our daughter and her boyfriend. The restaurant is gorgeous and I absolutely love the framed art in the bar reception area. It was a tad cold, but we were offered a blanket if needed. I felt that was a nice touch. Everyone we encountered was friendly. We really enjoyed the chefs journey with the cocktails and wine pairing.

Terrific food and service. Loved the corn bread, spring rolls and quail. It was over $400 for three people without alcohol which seemed pricey

I understand why Moon Rabbit achieved a Michelin star for cocktails but I don't understand why it hasn't been awarded one for food. The James Beard nominations make sense. This was our first time at MR. We had the Jade and Lotus cocktails, both excellent. I'm not whiskey drinker, but our server explained to me that it didn't taste like whiskey. She was right, it was delicious and went down easy. We had the Summer Roll, Summer Corn Pasta, Sweet Potato & Crab, and Stuffed Leaf. For dessert, we had the Curry and Durian Mousse. I had to have the Durian, having heard so much about it. All the food was beautifully presented and delicious. While our server suggested that we order more, the 3 dishes we each ordered were just enough. The service is outstanding, the best I've experienced. Our servers provided detailed and knowledgeable descriptions of each dish as they brought them. The entire staff of MR was friendly and helpful. Drinks and food are extremely unique, with many flavors and textures. The rooms are light and easy, not too busy to take away from the food and drink and service. Moon Rabbit is a special restaurant.

LOVED the food and service. I've been planning work dinners for my leadership team for the past six years and have never gotten rave reviews about the restaurant selection before!

The food was good, but the overall experience fell flat. Our waitress seemed disengaged and stuck to what felt like a rehearsed AI robotic script—there was little warmth or personality throughout the interaction. We also ordered a cocktail that unfortunately didn’t hit the mark, though to their credit, they did take it back without issue. All in all, it was an average visit. While the food had promise, the service and atmosphere left something to be desired.

Dinner was fantastic. Robert explained the dishes and arranged the order of the various items perfectly. Drinks and deserts exploded with flavor combinations that sounded strange but were delicious. Presentation was outstanding. The sponge cake desert was a work of art both in structure and flavors (though a bit small if you are expecting something large). Prices are high ($300+ for two with 5 courses and drinks) and worth it. Will be back!

Moon Rabbit was the closest we could get to Vietnam without getting on airplane. The portions were beyond generous for a tasting menu. The eggplant nigiri, stuffed quail and rabbit wellington left us speechless. The service was impeccable, along with the cocktail pairing. I look forward to my next dining experience at this amazing establishment.
