What a great surprise. First time dining in downtown Auburn. Couldn't have been any luckier to make a reservation at Monkey Cat. Just the two of us the day after Valentine Day. More than made up for the lack of a Valentine Day dinner.
Service was slow and unattentive, it was busy but still hard to flag down the server. 2 out of 4 of our dinners were not good, the lamb was very very undercooked in one dinner entree and my seafood pasta was very bland. And it was a Birthday dinner, I expected more for my wife.
We like the Monkey as a place to bring our out of town friends as it has a lot of character. We have lived in Auburn since before the Monkey Cat when the building was the corner grocer. one thing we would like to see is another vegetarian item on the menu. Lots of our friends have taken the plunge and are Vegan and Vegetarian. still, it is a great place to eat.
Very good food and drinks was happy they didn’t change their whole menu for Valentine’s Day!
Awesome service, Great food, Memorable experience!
I have eaten at Monkey Cat many times and would normally rate it very high. Valentines Day dinner was not at all what I expected! No Valentines day special menu, No extras like flowers on the table, nothing at all! Food was not great but was very expensive! Service just so/so! Won't be back for a holiday again
Monkey Cat was recommended to us by a store owner in town.
We didn’t care for the ambience, but the staff was very nice, however
The food was not warm enough
Excellent. We were seated promptly. The friendly waitperson achieved perfect balance of attention and privacy. Food, wine and dessert were first class. A delightful evening.
Had a great time. The food was very, very good. We had the Filet Mignon and it was cooked perfect and very tender. Would highly recommend it and we will go again.
Love going to Monkey Cat! Great place for cozy dinners . I was slightly underwhelmed by the Petrale Sole special but generally highly rate food and service .
Good food, good service.
Only issue was cold air coming in the back door when people went out that way.
The two specials, brick chicken and short ribs, were EXCELLENT. The flatbread with goat cheese and mandarins appetizer was also EXCELLENT. And finally, Tony did a marvelous job, as usual. Can’t beat Monkey Cat for date night!!
The food was good, but on the expensive side. They waitress was very nice. One thing that bothered me, although I did not complain was the drinks. The specials sign coming in said there was a special on margaritas for 5$ We 4 of them. On the bill, they charged $12 each instead of $5 which was $48 instead of $20 I anticipated.
Hello, I apologize for the confusion on the margaritas. Our house margarita made with well tequila is $5 on Tuesday's; but, you were served ours silver margarita with patron silver for $12. We hope to get the opportunity to serve you again.
I have gone there 2 other times and was not impressed considering it was rated as the best restaurant in Auburn. I decided to try it again since friends have said it was good. It was better this time so possibly it was because I ordered a different meal. The service was slow but the waitress was pleasant and kept us up to date on when we would be served. It is a nice restaurant but I am spoiled from living in the Bay Area for many years and our travels around the world.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you again and are happy to hear that this visit was a better experience. We hope to see you again!
Consistently good service and great food. I have found menu offers a good range of dining choices.
Thank you for the wonderful review and allowing us to serve you!
I would recommend the restaurant if price is not important. I do not believe it is good value.
Monkey Cat was rather quiet when we dropped in for a late lunch after skiing all morning, but the wait staff couldn’t have been nicer. The food was fresh and prepared well; a very enjoyable experience! We hope to get there again soon.
New Year’s Eve. The food was good but portions were to small.
Table was small and uncomfortable.
Monkey Cat is fantastic, the best restaurant in Auburn
Excellent, as always! The food and service are always great at Monkey Cat!
We dined there many times over the years because I always order the Seafood Pasta because it's the best
in the area! I was sad to here that the owner had passed away last June. Great Man!
New owners keep up the good work!
Service was extremely slow, specially when it came to getting our food once it was ordered. Very pricey for the quality and the amount. Pours of wine were not even close to what one would expect for the price. One of our party ordered one of the "specials" as described by the waitress (seafood pasta in red sauce) and when it came to the table it was in white sauce which is exactly what was NOT wanted. The order was not sent back only due to the amount of time we had already waited for our food.
Very disappointed and was hoping the new ownership would provide a new great restaurant in Auburn, as we do need one.
The filet is AMAZING!!!!! The bread is exceptional, I always love bread from the Truckee bakery!!!!
Awesome food amazing service.
Good menu and specials. All 6 of us had excellent meals and shared desserts. Great service. Look forward to our next opportunity to visit.
I HAD A DELIGHTFUL DINNER OF SCALLOPS WITH NOODLES AND BOK CHOY. MY WIFE DINED
ON SHRIMP. BOTH MEALS WERE DELICIOUS AND THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT.
The food was delicious and the service was friendly and helpful.
We celebrated our 39 th anniversary and were greeted warmly on arrival. Tony , our server, was there to greet us.
He is most helpful explaining the entrees and the wines. All 6 of us enjoyed our meals and the and the ambiance! Salmon and Steak were both delicious!
We wanted to like this place - a local joint, in the heart of downtown. I rarely give a review, but am doing so in order to help the owners correct some small issues, which would greatly improve the experience. It wouldn't;t take much to make this a great experience.
Fried Artichoke Hearts
Flatbread (Portabella / cheese)
Scallop Soba Dish
Asian Salad with Portabella Mushroom
The Soup came out Luke warm, but they were prompt in heating it back up. It was the tomato bisque with blue cheese, great soup, was great other than very low temp.
Artichokes were fine, although my wife passed on them, I thought they were fine, if under seasoned.
The flat bread had excellent flavor, but due to the amount of olive oil under the bread and on it, it was extremely "wet". Flavor was great, just need to tweak the preparation to keep the bread flat / non soggy.
The salad was fine, but my Soba dish had flavor of soil at the bottom. It had box ahoy in it, which is notoriously hard to clean, but I suspect they need to look at how or if the box ahoy is being rinsed before preparation. Once again flavor was great.
Taken together it may read harsh, but honestly, these were small things that are easy to fix. The food flavor was excellent, and service was attentive and friendly in a great ambience.
Please go there, and give honest feedback, as they are on the edge of being a great neighborhood gem. This was a Monday night, which is probably not anyone's best day if we are honest, and it is possible I had an unusual experience.
We dine at Monkey Cat on an average of once a month. We have always had great service and food. In fact, we think it is the best in Auburn!
It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t especially good either. Just okay. For the price I would go somewhere else.
The food was ok. The best of our three dinners was the scallop udon. The service was very slow but they were nice. The location and ambiance was cool.
Always good. Been many times. Please go and enjoy with family and friends.
This is our favorite restaurant & has been for years. As we understand there is new ownership. With this is mind it was great to see the same great staff that always makes the experience for us. My wife's favorite dish is the scallop udon. She orders this dish every time. So she knows it well. However this Saturday night 11/9/19 she was disappointed to see that the dish had changed. The broth was different it was much more beef based, darker in color & didn't have the same amount of ginger flavor. She also noted that instead of a few large scallops she had a larger number of small scallops. I tried the scallop udon as it is also one of my favorites. Needless to say were both disappointed in the change to one of our favorite dishes.
We also saw a sign as we entered regarding the new "kids" menu. We have children but reserve Monkey Cat for date nights or dining with other adults. Our typical dinner for the two of us with appetizers, salad, entry, desert & a bottle of wine sometimes two is well over $200 & worth every penny. We have restaurants we take our children too & will take to the Monkey Cat when they are old enough for the full menu. Until then we will continue to take them to restaurants with placemats for coloring & crayons. I surely hope to not see crayons & coloring mats reserved for lesser dining experiences than what we have come to know from Monkey Cat.
Great meal. The chicken cordon bleu was excellent, as were there desserts.
I love Monkey Cat! I always tell friends and coworkers about Monkey Cat every chance I get. When my daughter visits from Southern California we “have to” go to Monkey Cat.
That being said, for the first time ever I was seated on the bar-side of the restaurant. The ambiance was not there. The lighting is a bit harsh in the one light fixture (we were under it) as compared to softer bulbs in all the others. There’s too big a walk thru for traffic right down that center section, the tables are laid out like any regular old place but this is Monkey Cat, seems more thought could have been put into that layout on that side and more fitting to the vibe of the restaurant. But we love the entire menu, the bar menu and the staff are wonderful and fun! I’m sorry to mention the lights/seating. It did unfortunately affect this visit and we didn’t linger for dessert and coffee. But I’ll be back. Thank you.
Excellent food. Excellent drinks. Excellent service.
Very disappointed in the quality of the food
Terribly over priced for tomatoe soup with a few shell fish - special
Fantastic food and service! They just created a kids menu and it was very good and kid approved! Highly recommend their calamari appetizer. Good selection of local wines as well! Definitely check it out!
