    MICHELIN 1 Star2024

Von der OpenTable-Redaktion: Venezuelan chefs Tatiana Mora and Miguel Guerra earned a MICHELIN Star for their exemplary plant-based menus that you can try in a 14-course tasting or four- and six-course prix-fixes (and an a la carte at the bar). Think creative dishes like watermelon crudo and an arepa sampler with sauces like creamy guasacaca alongside colorful cocktails and wines from South America. Savor it all in an industrial-chic space surrounded by glass windows and with flower garlands draped over the bar. It’s all led to rave reviews, including by The Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema.

I made a special overnight stop in DC just to dine at Mita, and it was absolutely worth it. This restaurant is a plant-based genius. every dish a stunning, thoughtful creation with beautiful Latin American touches that elevate the experience far beyond typical vegan dining. One of the most moving moments was tasting their “Grandma soup,” a dish that beautifully captured the comforting, nostalgic memory of home and family. I was also fortunate to have the pleasure of sitting at the chef’s counter, where I watched the entire tasting experience unfold like a masterful show — from the precise, careful plating to the storytelling behind each dish. The flavors were bold yet balanced, the creativity was off the charts, and the entire experience left me grateful and impressed. Mita isn’t just a meal; it’s a destination that any food lover, vegan or not should experience when in DC.

One of the best meals I've ever had! The food was delicious and the staff were lovely, knowledgable, and open to any questions. I really appreciated learning about the story of each dish. We had the 6 course menu, which I highly recommend.

We read good reviews and were intrigued--and Mita beat all of our expectations. The food was delicious and wonderfully served; it was a culinary adventure that was simply delightful. We ordered the entire a la carte menu and shared all the courses for a wonderful feast. Thank you Mita for a memorable evening! And don't miss the margaritas that tasted more like a mango cocktail, with black salt decorated glasses that must be licked.

This place was definitely interesting but, as others have said, the food is just not that good - especially the later courses. Presentation and service are some of the best I have ever seen. If you are vegan and looking for an over the top vegan experience, this is your place!

Great experience. Loved the 14 course experience. Would highly recommend it. It is a vegan experience but I can assure you that you won’t miss the meat.

Review: Mita Missed the Mark When you advertise Michelin-star recognition and premium pricing, expectations naturally rise. Unfortunately, Mita fell short. From the moment we walked in, service felt chaotic and impersonal. We were greeted by at least four different servers, each repeating the same questions: “Still or sparkling?” “Whose birthday is it?” At one point, someone tried to refill a glass that was already full, insisting, “We like to keep the water topped up.” It was not a great start — more confusion than coordination. Small details matter, especially in fine dining. Our table was clearly damaged, and we noticed other signs of neglect in the decor. For a restaurant with a Michelin star, these details were disappointing. Service throughout the evening felt stiff and unrefined. It wasn’t about accents — we appreciate diversity — but about clarity. We struggled to understand dish descriptions and kept referring back to the menu just to follow along. That shouldn’t happen at this level. The meal opened with a piece of candy wrapped in rice paper, served on an agave leaf over herbal smoke. It felt more gimmick than gourmet — something you might find at an Asian market rather than the start of a Michelin-starred experience. The early courses leaned heavily on sweetness. A wild rice dish was overwhelmed by a cloying sauce and raisins. Once the mood began to dip, it never recovered. Dessert didn’t redeem things. A cherry bubble sauce tasted more like room fragrance, and the mochi wrapper had all the charm of cardboard. As we looked out through the restaurant’s many windows, we saw people walking by with boxes of Andy’s Pizza from next door. Honestly, we wished we’d done the same — and saved $500.
