Keith McNally brings Minetta Tavern to Washington DC

MINETTA TAVERN ORIGINALLY OPENED IN 1937
Named after the Minetta Brook — which ran southwest from 23rd Street to the Hudson River — the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.

Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."

We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.

Everything started out really great. Our waiter was nice. When I asked about the temperature of my burger and getting it cooked a little longer, he got an attitude. By the end of the meal, he was being really passive aggressive. When we contemplated dessert, he didn’t even wait for us to answer and just handed us the check. Food was good, but that experience was really disappointing.

Rough night made better by the incredible, out of this world level of service. The service alone makes me want to return and give Minetta Tavern another chance - it has 5 star potential and I almost want to say I came on a unusually bad night. Unfortunately upon my visit, it took 1.5-2 hours after our 8:30pm reservation to get seated. The steak ordered had to be sent back to cook further (even though I would've accepted it and moved on, the waitress who was exceptional wouldn't allow it). With that said, the host for the night and the waitress went above and beyond to make up where the broader restaurant lacked. I think they have some growing pains to get through and figure it out but given the highest caliber of service that the waitress and host showed during our visit, I will without a doubt return to give the restaurant another chance.

We loved DC Minetta Tavern! Fans of the New York one, we didn’t know if the vibe and ambience could be duplicated. We were wrong. It was authentic nyc with delicious food, fabulous service and wonderful experience. The crab croquettes were melt in your mouth delicious and steak frites was perfection. Can’t wait to return.

I was underwhelmed by our recent trip to Minetta Tavern to celebrate our 39th anniversary. My husband’s selections (crab coquettes and a lamb pasta) were very good, but mine were not (foie gras that was too cold and kind of tasteless, and a mushroom pasta that was not tasty at all). When we arrived, we asked to go to the speakeasy after our meal and were told our server would arrange it. (Our server noted it was our anniversary but then seemed utterly disinterested in us for the remainder of the meal; however, our meals arrived promptly.) When we were finally taken upstairs and told our table was awaiting us, we found the (very attractive) room was completely full, “but there was room at the bar.” The hostess then pointed to one stool, which we explained to her was not enough for both of us. So she found another stool and placed it directly behind the other. Not beside - behind. We asked about a small table in the corner which she reluctantly pulled towards a chair and tried to squeeze another small chair next to it - at which point, we just decided to leave. With all of the great restaurants in DC, I doubt we’ll be returning to this one.

Upon arrival, the hosts seemed to be a bit confused and thought our reservation was for the main restaurant, but we had specified it to be Lucy Mercer bar. They then led us upstairs and let us know it would be a 10 min wait. Our eventual seats were cramped, located right next to the kitchen. Our server did not come over often. The bar itself is BEAUTIFUL and I absolutely love this spot in theory, however, if you are going to charge $24+ for drinks, I believe that your level of service and the seating/ambience you provide should match the luxury price. I would maybe try again another time.

Great food. Waited was awesome. Definitely will be back. Tables are just a little too small and cramped. They can do a better job of managing the menu placement and what’s on the table at once. Otherwise I enjoyed myself.

Although the atmosphere was noisy and the service was a bit slow, overall it was a nice experience. I do recommend going on a not busy weekend, but the food and drinks were worth it.

Super fun vibe. Good service. Having been to the NYC location my expectations were high. Here, burger were just ok (Cap Grill makes a much more delicious burger) and the bone in steak was so full of fat that it was unpleasant to eat. Crab appetizer was delicious. As was the tequila cocktail. Mashed potatoes were gluey. Parking garage appreciated but probably be back anytime soon.
