This is where it all started – on the banks of the Rappahannock River overlooking where we grow our oysters. We like to call Merroir a “tasting room,” just so people know to expect something different. Everything is either served raw or cooked on an outdoor grill, small-plate-style, and beautifully paired with craft brews and world-famous wines. Each menu item is singularly-focused, seasonal, and ever-changing, so there’s always a surprise in store.

Aside form the mid 90’s temps, dinner with good friends was fine. Restaurant is on the water with good views and everything else was very good.

The venue doesn't get much better than overlooking the water. We had a reservation for Friday night, showed up a bit early and we sat right away. Unfortunately they sat us in full sun rather than one of the shady areas. When we asked to move, we were told "no". We even offered to wait in line again, so someone else could have the full sun table. Eventually we were able to convince the hostess it was ok for my pregnant wife to move to the shade. At that point we could enjoy the incredible ambience. It's a picture perfect setup. The food did not live up to the hype (I hear some key personnel have moved to Adrift, which is one of the best meals I've had). Our grilled oysters were dry, the veggies were inedible, the rockfish skin wasn't crispy, and generally the vibes were off. Hopefully we will get the chance to try again. The setting alone is worth the trip. Maybe it was just a bad night for the kitchen/hostess.

I use to give our food experience at Mermoir as a 2-3 star experience but they have tremendously improved the menu since our first visit in 2017. We still go often despite the earlier food experiences simply because it is on the water and outdoor dining. But now I look forward to the food. The shrimp and rappahannock oysters are always an A+ but now they have a variety of offerings and specials. Two of our guests had the seafood sandwich, one had the crab cake, one had the cheeseburger, and one an oyster plate and they all rated their meals a 4 star. Two of us had the steamed shrimp and that is a 5 star. Always plan on slow service whether they are busy or not as it is a small kitchen and the poor service people hustle but it is difficult job serving from a kitchen that is not close, walking on uneven gravel all day, understaffed and usually very hot. But being outside on the river is always fun and not to be missed.

Excellent location at the end of a country road terminating at the river. Hostesses were cheerful, waitress attentive and knowledgeable. Great selection of beer and wine. Outside seating was plentiful and provided great water views. It was a slightly chilly day, so we chose the fried oysters over the usual half shell raw. The oysters were fired perfectly -- crisp, delicate and well-seasoned. My red pepper crab soup came with a dollop of crab meat on top and a little spicey bite. The whole bass fish dish had a crispy skin with moist interior and a flavorful sauce. My wifes burger was thick and juicy with double patties -- she ate all of it which is rare, so she definitely enjoyed it. We ended with the key lime pie and chocolate cake both very good. We left already planning to return during a bright summer day to really enjoy the atmosphere.

Very much enjoyed a return trip to Merroir. Delicious Rappahannock oysters and beer; seafood roll by partner was not up to par and quite surprisingly tasteless and not well seasoned. Outdoor location even on a day threatening rain was an easy drive from RVA.

I am one of the original patrons of this tasting room from it's inception. Lots of great memories. Chef Pete was awesome. I haven't had but a few visits over the past several years. But in those visits, I noticed a overall quality issue. Anyway. Tonights dinner was the usual oysters on half shell and shrimp. That was delicious as always. But the entree had no love in it.
