I had the shrimp and grits- delicious- and tried two wine flights. My friend loved her duck. This was the second trip in a week while I was on vacation. I will go back every time I am in Virginia Beach.
Kitchen was very slow. Food was average.
Our service was outstanding as were the food, drink, and ambiance. My wine flight was interesting and educational. The dinner was delicious. We were advised that the pork was added to the menu recently due to the rave reviews it got as a special. It was amazing. Paired with Brussels Sprouts and whipped sweet potatoes, the meal was full of complex flavors, much like the variety of wines in my flight.
Lovely evening out with girlfriends. We had a bottle of wine and three appetizers that were amazing...mussels, nachos & Brie platter. The service and ambiance were perfect for a quiet evening event.
Thanks but no thanks. This was my first experience dining at Mermaid Winery, and while the atmosphere and food were great, the service was not. We had a very nice server but they clearly had too much going on. We waited a long time before anyone came to the table, and once they arrived, kept apologizing for being so busy and telling us that they'd be able to be more attentive soon. This didn't provide for the relaxing, wine drinking birthday dinner my family and I were hoping for. When a member of our party asked management if they could send a new server who wasn't as stressed, instead of complying, the management sent our server back to our table to apologize and explain again that they'd be able to be more attentive in a minute. But if we still wanted a new server, they understood. I'm disappointed that not only would management overburden their server in the first place to the point that they couldn't handle our table, but then wouldn't comply with our request which created a very awkward and unprofessional situation for me and family. This situation alone does not make me want to go back to Mermaid Winery for a second visit.
Great atmosphere, food and wine list. Love having a date night or nice dinner with friends.
I want to give more stars but I can’t. The hummus plate & olive tray were nice starters as were our happy hour glasses of wine. The lamb burger was over spiced with harissa and was smaller than expected. My side salad had black slimy lettuce in it - more than what could have been overlooked at plating. The creme brûlée was tasty. Overall, the experience was okay - not great.
Had a amazing time. The waitress was amazing and the manager Josh was patient and taught us things about the wine. Great time. Will differently be back again.
Saw a sign for Mermaid Winery on my way into VA Beach. Looked up the yelp review and saw great reviews on their menu. Made the reservation on OpenTable and really enjoyed the whole experience. Started with valet parking, then a quick tour of the winery/tasting room. Great seat and our waiter was awesome. Dominic helped us with our wine selection and also brought us a free tasting based on our conversation of wine preferences. The food was incredible. We had the poutine fries and my friend had the burger for dinner while I had the filet. She raved about her burger and I really enjoyed my filet. The wine flight we chose was the sweet, and it was great!! We each had another glass and while the dessert menu looked amazing we were too stuffed to try anything. We finished our night and drinks on the patio by the fire. All in all such a wonderful experience!
Food was yummy and the service was excellent. We enjoyed our meal very much! It was a birthday and I even wrote that when I booked the reservation online but absolutely no mention of it. Why ask if no intention of acknowledging it? Other than that the visit was great!
We have dined at there Norfolk location many times and only once at this location.
Our server was not in a good mood and it affected our experience in a negative way.
In hindsight I should have spoken with the manager bit frankly we were just excited to leave.
The waiter Jamison was knowledgeable and friendly. He made recommendations and told us about the winery.
Our server was so patient and knowledgeable to help our mom’s night out be a complete success!!! We will be back!
Our first visit. The food was excellent and the service was extraordinarily wonderful. It was a quiet and slow night and our server was gracious and attentive. The food was delicious. My only negative criticism was that I felt it was a little overpriced. Other than that I enjoyed our experience. I will return in the future.
Excellent the server and the staff were very attentive and the food was prepared per our requests.
Loved it! The wines were awesome and the food was great!
Second visit was not stellar compared to our first visit. The server was not nearly as knowledgable nor as attentive. The food quality was not as good. The selection of wines is significant but the choices we tried were not to our liking.
A great addition to this end of Shore Drive.
A nice menu. Good food.
The service was terrific. Lots of fun wines and cocktails.
A fun evening spot with friends.
Please try to do something about the bright sun light that comes in from the front windows. It has been a bother every time we have been at the restaurant. We love coming to Mermaid Winery in Virginia Beach, but the sun glare is a problem.
We went to the winery for wine tasting. One person did a Flight. She enjoyed it very much. We had the waygu burger and they were delicious. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. We look forward to our next visit.
I found the food very good but not impressed by the Mermaid wines. The Chardonnay was horrible and the Pinot Noir was too sweet. Other wines on the menu were very good.
I've been for lunch which was fabulous. The lunch menu had a great variety and the food was delicious. However, I have also been for brunch which was awful. It should be called benedict only brunch and you would think they would do that very well since they have so many different ones however 4 people out of 5 got benedict and all of them were not good. The egg may as well have been hard boiled not pouched because it was hard all the way through for all the benedicts. The fried green tomato was obsolete it was so small and all of them were on biscuits. Where's the variety for a made to order brunch. I would never recommend for brunch. I would like to say the service was excellent both times.
Great service from valet, hostess, and waiter! We were greeted with warm, friendly smiles. Our waiter knew the menu well. The food was cooked to perfection
Great wine list and good value if you join the wine club. The space is great, especially the outside patio. Management is very nice, but wait staff service is average. Unfortunately, the food quality is hit or miss for the price. The appetizers are usually very good (except the week they did sweet beet hummus, it was so bad everyone at the table wouldn’t eat it). Both entrees I had were average. The salmon was just ok & the side dish was off the mark; the crabcake was not lump crab, I would not order it again. Hopefully the food will improve, because it is a great location with fantastic wine.
Great spot for a girlfriends meet-up. We chatted a long time, one glass of wine with Light Fare. Like their Mermaid Chenin Blanc - don't always see that on a menu. My friend had a sparkling rose, a nice summery wine. Food was excellent, service excellent. Lovely spot. Would like to return when the weather is cooler and we can sit outside on the covered patio.
Service was good as was the food. I thought the initial presentation of the wine list and explanantion was overdone. I know the difference between new world wines and old world wines etc and just because I hadn't been Mermaid didn't mean I needed the wine lesson. As one would expect at a winery, the wine list was quite extensive.
I went for my birthday. The wine was excellent. I also loved the s’mores dessert.
Three words... FAB-U-LOUS! Additionally.. a great location for us as we are less than 1/2 mile away!
They ran out of menus. Didn’t have cooler for white wine because they didn’t have enough (and this is a restaurant/winery????). Said they would bring one if one got freed up at another table. It never did. Service poor, waitress unpleasant manner. My meal was good, but the French fries were cold. My husbands meal which was shrimp, was overdone. Could tell just by looking at the food.
Good pours on the wine. Food portions just right and well presented. Nice atmosphere and courteous waiters.
The four of us ordered the Waygau burger and the burger was very good. But the pretzel bun that came with it seemed stale, dry and was not soft. We wish it had been a different type of bread. I wanted the Chardonay but they were out of their brand and I had to order a more expensive brand. Another person changed to pinot grisio. The service was good.
First time to Mermaid Winery. Overall food was great. Oyster appetizer was mediocre. The rest of the meal was very good!
We will definitely go back!!
Excellent food & service! Try a wine flight with your meal; it's a great idea!
We had a great evening (first time at Mermaid Winery). Really enjoyed the 2 flights of wine (Mermaid Winery and French). The value for those is outstanding, in my opinion. A great way to try out unfamiliar wines. We each ordered another glass of our favorites afterwards. The food was really great too. My husband had a Caesar salad with shrimp as an appetizer. A very generous portion and so tasty. The dressing was delicious and not overdone. Caesar salad is my husband's litmus test for a 'new' restaurant, and Mermaid Winery passed with flying colors! I had the beet hummus platter (appetizer) with pita wedges, olives and carrot sticks. Again, a generous portion and very tasty. Our main courses: 2 fish tacos (mahi mahi), well seasoned and with a bit of a kick. Hubby had the crab cake on a pretzel roll. Both dishes served with fries and from the 'light fare' menu. With the appetizers, the amounts were plenty to fill us up. The service was fantastic. Very attentive and knowledgable without being annoying.
The only thing that was a little off was the timing of the food service. When only half way through our appetizers, leisurely enjoying the flights of wine, the main courses were served. So we set our appetizers to the side, and finished our (hot) entrees first. A bit awkward, but since our appetizers were cold, it didn't really matter. Would have preferred more spacing between the dishes, though. It wasn't a matter of rushing the customer, because the restaurant was by no means full. So lesson for next time; don't order appetizer and entree at the same time.
The atmosphere was okay. The restaurant is not brightly lit (area to the left when you walk in). Only some small lights over the main dining area, and recessed lights over the booths. Small votives on the tables. The decor is pretty dark, which is fine, but I prefer a little more light. That's just a personal preference, though. Overall we had a great time. We'll be back for sure!
We love the wine flights, which set this restaurant apart from others. The food was very good.
They need more servers in the weekend. It was busy and we sat outside. There were about 6 tables occupied with 3 or more people and only 2 servers. We planned on eating dinner but stuck to wine and cheese because the service was so slow.
Our first visit guided by outstanding recommendations by our server was an excellent experience. Interestingly we were more impressed by the food than the wines selected. The cheese board and beet salad were our favorites.
My husband and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. I have heard about the Winery/ Restaurant. We were very pleased with every aspect of this establishment. It was quite pricey but the food, wine, service and ambiance was excellent!
Was anticipating a lot more mermaid themed decor. With a name like "Mermaid Winery" in Virginia beach, it seems like they missed the opportunity to have a beachy mermaid decorated bar in a beach town. Decor was dated and Maroon and black... Just didn't fit the mood/vibe I was expecting. Food was great, Virginia wines - not so much, but there 2 reds that were from California weren't too bad.
Staff was extremely welcoming, simple atmosphere, food good. Crab cake was small for the $$. We will return.
