This place used to have really great service and they told you about all the specials and really took their time to explain about all the great wines. The service was extremely below expectations and even some of the other servers were extremely rude when we asked to grab our server when we could not find her. Our server was extremely sweet, but was very under knowledgable about wines and could not recommend anything to us. I wanted to buy a couple of bottles, but she brought the check before asking if we wanted anything else. Felt a little bit rushed and not at all Welcomed. I would have thought because of covid and not able to work for a while, they would have gone out of their way to create an even better experience. I even had an open table reservation with a note that it was a special occasion and a birthday celebration and no mention of anything at all from the hostess or from our server. I will try the Virginia Beach location next time.
Food was sooo great, as was our server. Had the avocado toast, pastry puff Brie and the blackened tuna nachos. We will be back!
This was my second time at Mermaid Winery, but my first time at the Norfolk location. I had very high expectations after my visit to the Virginia Beach restaurant. Upon arrival there we’re about 5-6 employees behind the bar but it took them a couple of minutes to acknowledge us. Once seated I took notice of the spiders webs in the light and hanging from the flower palette hanging from the ceiling. When asked about drinks, I wanted a sweet moscato and my date wanted a semi sweet red. Instead of bringing samples, I received a full glass of a semi sweet white. Due to lack of listening, my date also got a glass of white wine. When I asked the waitress about a semi sweet red she started to say they didn’t offer any until I told her we had a glass at the Virginia Beach location. It took about 45 minutes to receive our food. During our extensive wait, our waitress only came to the table to bring silverware. One we received our food, my potatoes were almost cold and my dates pasta was Luke warm. Out of the hour and 30 minutes we spent there, we were never offered another glass of wine. Needless to say we will not return to this location. We did not feel welcome upon arrival, our waitress was not attentive nor was she knowledgeable about the company’s products, the restaurant was not filthy but eating under cobwebs is not ideal. Overall I would rate the restaurant with 3 stars, only because the food was still good.
We went with kids and even though our reservation was for outside they accommodated us indoor as weather was a little nippy. The wine suggestion was amazing. Food was great. Our kids had chicken pasta and they enjoyed every last bite. Wife had beet salad and was awesome and I had blackened tuna which was really wonderful. Overall it was a great dinner night with the family. The ambience was really nice too.
This my second time visiting this establishment in a very long time. Truly enjoyed it. Server was extremely polite, informative and courteous. I will definitely go back.
The place has great food and wine but variety could be better.
I cant remember if her name is Jaq or Jaz, but knows her stuff! She was so kind and patient helping me to lick the perfect glass of wine. Food was great, as usual. Can’t wait to come back!0
Food was average and the waitress misunderstood my order. Ordered blackened tuna tacos to share and she brought out the tacos and a separate tuna filet entree. Explained to her that we only wanted/ordered the tacos and she became visibly upset and ignored us the rest of the night. Never had an experience like that where the server acted so unprofessionally. Won't be going back and I live right across the street lol
Always great food and good wine. Service is good; staff knowledgeable about wine.
Chauncey was an amazing server ! We had a fantastic experience. The wine was delicious and the atmosphere was very calming and enjoyable. We will be back soon!
Overall, a good place to get appetizers and have a few glasses with friends. As a dining experience, it didn’t hit the mark. Appetizers were pretty good (Had fish nachos and cheese and artichoke dip) Entrees were good (had the shank and she had the blackened tuna). There were things on the menu the kitchen was out of and the waiter didn’t inform us until we were trying to order. Chose not to order dessert. The service was a let down. I’m happy to spend money especially if it’s an event or special occasion to include a generous tip to the waitstaff. Very little interaction with us as it was our first time dining there. Wait staff did not ask if it was our first time or if this was any type of special occasion. No assistance guiding us through the menu or wine choices or inform us what the establishment was known for (menu favorites we should try). Maybe go back to purchase a bottle and of wine but not to dine.
Mermaid Winery is a classic example of unrealized potential and poor execution.
The environment is nice enough, they are handling COVID guidelines well. Nice variety of wines. But the management clearly has not conveyed how to deliver service and of hospitality to the staff. With the exception of our (replacement) server, the entire staff is downright rude - bordering on hostile.
The young woman who greeted us could not have been more rude or disengaged. She literally rolled her eyes at us a few times.
At least four other staff members behind the bar were no better.
After we asked to change tables (which we were left on our own to accomplish) our new server was sweet, but neither well trained nor empowered. When we asked for a wine list, she bluntly stated “that’s we aren’t giving out lists - I told you that I’d make suggestions after you tell me what you like.” Management should have given her training on how to handle that question - especially since the web site boasts over 800 wines. Worse, she had to obtain permission to replace my full glass of wine after a bug flew into it.
We bailed after one glass and an appetizer. We will never return. Best wishes to the owner and management team in getting their act together. Wine is about community, grace, and making people feel comfortable and happy. They fail on every account.
Hi there, Thank you for stopping by and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We strive to deliver an excellent experience and it sounds like we fell short with you. Regarding the wine list, we are not handing them out because it is a 36 page document that we do not have the support staff to sanitize them after each use in order to keep our guests and staff safe. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and it allows us to make positive improvements. Cheers! Jennifer Eichert, Owner
Another quiet evening outside with a flight of wine. We chose the French Flight. It was a nice broad selection of wines to taste. The pretzel twists were amazing!
It was a great outdoor experience! I’m
The food and wine are great. They do a very good job with outdoor seating and social distancing.
Great service sat outside a little warm that day but no-one was outside had the whole place to ourselves. Food and service was excellent. One glass of wine came with the lunch special the MERMAID GRILLED CHEESE
Sharp Cheddar | Smoked Gouda | French Brie | Zesty Tomato Jam | Bacon | Sourdough was sooo good a must try!
Colby was fantastic she perfectly paired the wine to our taste. Colby was attentive and yet not over bearing. Very relaxing evening
Another fantastic time at Mermaid Winery. The staff is so friendly and the food is great.
Mermaid Winery is always a great place to sit and chill. They are very helpful so you can discover the best wine for you. The tastings are always a hit!
Everyone in my party of 3 are wine club members and we are used to going to Mermaid for wine tasting during each month's reveal. This month was a bit different however Mermaid staff did not disappoint. First, the red & white wine club selections this month were all amazing! Second, having the wine tasting delivered at our table provided a much more personalized experience. I think it was the manager who did out wine tasting (thin white dude) and he was so friendly and personable and was not reading off of prewritten notes. We also ordered some food which was promptly scarfed up. We loved the old Mermaid Fries poutine style but these new fries with chimichurri and chorizo were great. It is good to see that Mermaid didn't lose one single step during COVID and are able to deliver a mind-blowing experience.
Loved our experience at Mermaid Winery and we all walked out with at least a bottle of wine. The wine flights were a great way to sample options!
Waiter very knowledgeable and patient. Food great!
Food is always great! Chef is really good! Wine choices galore. Staff is knowledgeable and very service-oriented. Outdoor seating wonderful.
An outstanding dining experience. They have done a wonderful job expanding the outdoor seating area. The staff are always gracious and friendly. This new phase of dining has dampened the service. I highly recommend the tuna bite nachos. Thanks Mermaid Winery for another great time!
Excellent service, great wine and appetizer as always. Always a great place for a relaxing outing
Mermaid Winery never disappoints. Great wine, great food, great staff. Perfect place for date night.
Train horn was intermittent and loud. I'm aware the Mermaid Winery can't fix this and that we currently have no choice but to sit outside, however, it does affect your ability to socialize. Items weren't available on the menu. Food was okay but not fantastic.
The outdoor dining was great in these times of restrictions!
Outdoors because of pandemic. Perfect weather, great staff, wonderful food, delicious wine - what could be better? Appropriate distancing, disposable menus, etc. - all the appropriate safeguards. They did a great job!
We ordered the spinach artichoke dip with crabmeat along with Mermaid fries. The fries are our new favorite. This time around the crabmeat tasted really fishy on the dip and detracted from a usual staple for me and my wife.
Whether you’re looking for a laid back casual night or a formal celebration, this is the place to go.
Mermaid Winery just revamped their menu and it’s delicious. The staff was amazing and the ambiance was as smooth as the wine. Definitely will be returning and recommend to anyone.
We were abandoned in the tasting room while the waiter was doing his close up chores. I was tempted to get up snd pour my own wine from the bar. The charcuterie board was nice, the steak frites was ok, but not for that price. We may try the VB location in the future but we will not be back to this location.
Great food and superb wine.
Wine tasting should’ve been nice but the guy was rude; food is usually good but there was hair in my food; chef staff had on hats which means servers are in the kitchen moving around without nets. Hostess tried to make it better but the overall experience was just too poor to recover.
Met another couple there. Overall a very good experience. Limited menu that night (no entrees were available) thus lower rating for food and value.
Pretty good experience. I Wasn’t a fan of the Brussel sprouts. Would like to see more choices of sides.
Best thing I’ve done in Norfolk! I loved the tasting
I've always loved Mermaid Winery! Great place to go with a few friends, good food, and I love the wine flights. My dinner came out quite a while after the other two, and seemed a bit rushed, but all our appetizers were great.
My only complaint is about how long I was left waiting for service. I made a reservation at 7 pm. My party arrived at 6:55 pm. We waited for someone to come check us in for 10-15 minutes. Employees walked by... some actually made eye contact... but no one came up to ask if we needed help. There was a tasting at the front, so that might played a factor. But it still felt like a very long time. Beyond that... the server was was great, the food was delicious, and the wine was amazing. I will be back again. But I may not bother making a reservation next time.
Overall an ok experience. Good concept not supported with execution. A single server did his best with small and large groups but the kitchen did not keep up nor any help materialized. The two locations of this concept could be merged with one location with service and execution faithfully translating the vision. Great wine list with mostly winners but a few stinkers. Looking forward to visiting the VB location before making a final decision. Prices are reasonable once service issues are resolved.
