Correct me if I'm wrong but I think "luau" is the Hawaiian word for "bar mitzvah." If it isn't it, the Mauna Kea had me fooled. The food was not great nor was the seating or the service. Calling it "fair" would be generous. That said, the show was cool and worthwhile. They separate the show price from the food price on the bill; it's still not clear to me if you can go to the show and skip the food. If so, do that. My bill with no extra drinks came to about $370.00, by far the most expensive meal we had during our trip and also by far, the worst.

The cost for the dinner & show was $96 pp. $60 for dinner & $36 for the show. If you really want to go to a luau, save $60 & just go to the show. Good variety of mediocre buffet style Hawaiian food. There are many other places on the Big Island to try excellent local cuisine at much more reasonable prices. The show itself was good, with very talented dancers & fire twirlers.

The performances were quite good, reciting Hawaiian history and giving background on the various forms of Hawaiian dance and cultural significance. The food was traditional (roast pig, beef, etc) in keeping with the idea of a luau, though it also comes with the obvious downside of feeding some 200 odd people buffet-style -- a lot of hit and miss. But, this show is all about the performance, and the location and execution was done quite well.

By far the best luau food I have ever had. Smaller scale luau show but still well done and the performers are top notch. No bad seat in the house. Spectacular view. I will go back!
