Mattarello Cooking Lab
We are BYOB friendly! So while we wait to get our liquor license we gladly invite you to bring your own wine! We’ll be happy to serve you and match with the perfect pasta!
One of the best meals I’ve had in downtown. Honestly enjoyed my dish and the tiramisu was beyond!!
If you are going for a make your own pasta night with a group it might be okay. However, if you are simply dining in don't plan on eating. We waited 2 hours and 45 minutes for our food and never received it. Appetizers came out after 1 hour and 45 minutes and we were told at that point they were "rushing out our entrees." Another hour later at 2 hours and 45 minutes since we sat down we told them we had enough and walked out.
Double date, double bday
This was our first visit to this restaurant. We were celebrating my husbands birthday.
I found it on passport dining website. The pasta was so good. My husband had the pesto ravioli. I had the fettuccini w cheese sauce. Both pastas were cooked perfectly. The flavor was delicious.
We love the daft they don’t have a liquor license. You can bring your own favorite wine and not pay a cork fee.
Unfortunately for the restaurant, it was empty. For us it was perfectly quiet.
Once more people try this restaurant, they will get busy. I hope so so they can stay in business.
They also offer pasta making classes. We plan on taking one in the future
My only negative is that the prices are high for pasta.
Italian food like your Mother would cook (if your Mother was Italian). Everything is made in-house and is excellent. Melt-in-your-mouth pasta, creamy ravolli filling, massive salads and exquesite desserts. The absolute best Italian food I've ever had at very reasonable prices. A dining delight
Not great service and pasta was dry
Delicious, authentic fresh pasta dishes. Highly recommend the ragu bolognese. The owner was very kind to us and happily welcomed young children. The kids enjoyed watching the pasta class that was taking place.
They are BYO right now we love because we like to bring our own wine. Pasta is a bit expensive but worth it and makes sense given that it is handmade. Rare to find real Italian food like this.
Good home-made pasta! Everyone in our party was happy with her pasta, but the service was a bit slow. Also, by the time everyone got her dish, some dishes were already cold. The restaurant is cozy and small, but our table close to the doorway in the back was drafty. Try to grab a table close to the windows.
Fantastic pasta! Cozy place. BYO was key, bottles were opened very well.
All four of our meals were very salty. It appeared that the waiter was also the chef and was giving a cooking class as the same time as our meal, so we didn't feel that we received good service. We are not even sure if it was an experienced cook that made our meal as he was not overseeing the preparation. It appeared they just put a lot of salt on the pasta sauce and meatballs.
Hello Carol, i'm sorry your group didn't like the service. On that night we had way more people than we expected and group arrived late making all the service really difficult. For you knowledge I'm not the chef, just the server. All your food was prepared in the kitchen and the chef, my wife, has more than 10 years of experience in this job. Salt is tricky and it is the reason because we don't even salt water for our pasta to not overdue for custmers,i'm sorry they were too salty for your taste
The pasta here is fresh and perfectly prepared with delightful sauces in appropriate volume. Simply the best Carbonara in Southern California. This is authentic Italian food in San Diego!
The food was not what we were expecting. The spinach ricotta ravioli was not that appetizing. Lasagna was not bad but overall probably won't come here again.
Francesco has created a gem. The place is handsome. The menu extensive. And the food delicious.
One note: no wine is available (yet - in November, 2019). There is no charge for bringing your own, and suitable classes are supplied cheerfully.
Great simple homemade Italian food. Recommend any of the homemade pastas
Amazing pesto fettuccine- great desserts. Small intimate dining.
Amazing food accompanied by amazing service. An absolutely charming little place that plays a great soundtrack.
The restaurant is run by a young couple from Italy. Husband works the front; wife cooks in the bag. We had a delicious salad followed by fantastic pasta dishes. Carbonara is one of my favorites and this was cooked to perfection and the portion was ample. My dinner companion, a former chef and former owner of an Italian restaurant as well a catering business for years, had ravioli and declared it excellent. He said "wow, this is a lot of food when it arrived" and he ate every bit of it. Slightly off the beaten path on the edge of the Gaslamp District and as a result removed from the noise & crowds. Will definitely return here.
The food and service re very good. Quaint place just off the high-traffic Gas Lamp
This restaurant has it all - good food, great atmosphere & excellent service! We were made to feel very welcome upon arrival. The pasta is homemade and the ingredients used in the food are fresh and you can really tell the difference. You must get dessert - I highly recommend the tiramisu. It is seriously the best I have ever tasted!!!
A darling, quietly chic cafe reminiscent of great neighborhood restaurants in Soho or Park Slope NY. A relief from the boozy. vaguely sleazy hot spots with mediocre food in the Gaslamp and East Village. Small groups, couples and singles felt right at home.
The pasta was exquisite; the best in San Diego. Beats Little Italy by a mile. Four different dishes were perfectly cooked to order and seasoned just right. For once a sauce that’s not too salty.
Protein offerings are minimal; meatballs and sausages. Eat a high protein lunch and save your carb intake for Mattarello.
Go. Just go. You won’t be sorry. 😋
The service by the owner was friendly, personal and accommodating. A nice guy who cares passionately about serving high quality ingredients prepared perfectly. Not fussy.
I've got to be honest. I never write reviews, but this experience was so bad that I feel compelled to write a review. In fact, it really makes me question OpenTable's rating system that this has any stars at all. The food was truly, truly terrible, they have no wine or beer to be served, the waitress had zero idea what she was doing and kept saying "Sorry, i'm new to this" and the dishes had price tags on them .There was a collective WTF from the table
Sometimes there are this kind of people. even Opentable rating is overrated but probably you think to be too smart than other people. The "WTF table", didn't like food. It can happen. You even tried to teach how to cook it. Fine too. What is not fine is joking against the waitress that was gentle and respectful, while you've been arrogant and rude. I love this city because people are kind and lovely. And you were not. You're not confident enough to show your name but i ask you to not come again
Excellent Italian food made by owner from Italy. Pasta and baked products are made fresh daily. Ravioli is prepared to order and is excellent. Sauces are all very good too! Definitely give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
In town for vacation. Our hotel was near Mattarello Cooking Lab so we thought we would try it out. The host was warm and helpful in suggesting certain dishes. The food was great and I love supporting an owner operated business. Definitely worth your time!
Best pasta we’ve ever enjoyed. My kids will never appreciate the pasta I cook at home again!
It's like taking a trip to Italy! Pasta and sauces are so good! They are made daily in house and all their baked goods are also made in house. Owners are from Italy and are very personable and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
I was very excited to try this place! It was not the best area, but a cute little restaurant. I love carbonara, it was burnt tasting, a very small portion which is a good thing. They served tepid tap water. The service was basically non existent. Really overpriced.
Excellent food. Only problem is no wine as they don't have their liquor license yet. Was looking to a calm place to relax after a long day at Comic Con and wanted some good food and glass of wine. I ordered the salad with turkey, corn, avocado, etc. It was very good and would recommend it. I will definitely be going back here once they have a wine list!! Can't wait to try all the amazing authentic looking pasta dishes on the menu.
If you haven't visited this wonderful resturant in the Gaslamp you are missing out. Amazing food, quiet atmosphere, great prices and great family stories.
Homemade food and owners are from Italy- I can’t wait to go back! ❤️❤️❤️
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. Classic and unique dishes, could taste the difference with the homemade pasta. We were there early (before 6pm) and spent a long time talking with the owner. We so appreciate his vision and efforts, they designed and did the work on renovations themselves. If you prefer wine with your Italian meals, bring a bottle. They are still waiting for their liquor license but this should NOT deter you from trying this place.
A charming little gem in the gas lamp district.
Fantastic new restaurant in gaslamp. Amazing menu and service
The restaurant is run by an Italian husband and wife--she cooks, he works up front, so he is racing around to seve the tables. Although it's a small place, he's very busy. So, it's important to adopt an "Italian attitude," meaning this is not dine and dash. They're waiting for a liquor license, so you can bring your own wine with NO corkage fee. That makes this dining experience very affordable. The husband/wife are obviously working very hard to make the restaurant a success, and you have to admire their effort. The food was quite good. Entrees were around $20. I would recommend it.
Horrible from start to finish in every way. I have written a lengthy review at Yelp.
Loved the atmosphere and the food was delicious! Possibly the only negative was the lack of wine with our dinner due to no bar! We were in San Diego for a visit and will surely return to the restaurant again!
Tiny place. Cute. Simple decor. Comfortable. Nice that we could bring our own drinks without paying a corkage fee (seeing they do not have a liquor license yet). Their bread is delicious. I had the Cippollotto (Handmade farfalle with green onions, bacon and pecorino) for $18.00. Prices seemed reasonable for a restaurant in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter. Food was served in a timely manner, on what appeared to be a bread plate. There were a few farfalle (bowtie) pasta in the center -- about 1/4 of the amount you would get in most Italian restaurants. If I had ordered it for an appetizer, even at 1/2 the price, the quantity would have been surprising. It was lukewarm, but tasty. My friend ordered the Eggplant Parmesan with a small Mediterrean salad, which for an Antipasti was the proper size. Her Eggplant was also lukewarm. We did not mention our disappointment about the lukewarm food because we had another engagement and could not wait for reheating/recooking.
So, overall, a disappointment. The food on the menu sounds delicious, and I had trouble deciding what I wanted, noting that I would have to come back and try everything, but I do not think I will be back. Pricing is good for its location, but too expensive for what you get for your money.
Food service was slow. The food was fresh and a great value with BYOB for wine.
The place is really beautiful and food it’s really fresh
Freshest pasta I had in a while. This place is definitely worth a try.
Awesome fresh Italian food.
