The small snack you receive in Spain for 1 or 2 Euro bears little resemblance to the US version of “tapas,” basically an overpriced 1/4 portion of a main dish. While the food and service at Mateo is good, our bill of $120 (before tip) for two would seem steep at any restaurant, in particular a tapas place.

I really enjoyed the food during my visit and the customer service was great. My only complaint is that the font on the menu was way too small and the space between the tables was to small. Every time the waiter was helping the table next to us there was a butt hovering uncomfortably close to our faces and food. It was distracting.

We have had great experiences at this restaurant, but tonight my husband and I were not pleased with the menu options or service. We left hungry due to poor menu options and food quality. At the end of our meal, our waiter revealed to us that they were no longer serving our favorite dessert. We were so disappointed. If I would have known that our experience would have been so poor, I would have made reservations at a different restaurant. Happy New Year!

Great place to spend New Year's Eve. Fixe price menu had excellent selections. Lobster and grits were delicious, as was the duck and the beef tartare.

We were there for New Year’s Eve and my birthday and they had a wonderful prix fixe menu and the food was delicious!

we’ve been to mateo many times. always been a good experience . new years eve wait staff was nice but very poorly trained for the evening. we spent $200 and really wish we had gone elsewhere. food was cold. etc. this is solely on management.

Disappointing New Year's Eve at Mateo. We had an early table for the prix fixe. Six dishes and they all hit the table inside of ten minutes. We've eaten at Mateo many times over the years living in Durham. Never felt so rushed. Poor value for the price, truly. They can afford to do better than this.
