Masuya Restaurant is located in a building, which has been designated as a cultural asset, on O’Connell Street in Sydney. This is the same place as the office of Kanematsu Gosho, the pioneer of Australia – Japan trades, was situated in 1980. Masuya Restaurant opened in 1993, then full renovation was implemented in 2006.

The approx. five meters long sushi counter, designed by architect Robert Toland in ‘kabuki red’ with an idea of the stage of kabuki, has since fascinated not only local Australian customers but also various people with different backgrounds.

A showcase displays more than 20 different sushi ingredients everyday including locally produced fish, which is purchased on the day. Other carefully selected ingredients are wagyu beef, free-range pork, and seasonal vegetables. Specially designed tableware of Malcolm Greenwood and tables made of Tasmanian Oak is also creating a great atmosphere. Enjoy your time in this amazing space of hospitality.

A Spectacular Event You Don't Wanna Miss! Our event offers an exquisite experience with the legend of sushi chef Mr. Kawaguchi and Mr. Bluefin Tuna Narito Ishii's amazing tuna cutting show carved apart with a single skilled knife. The Bluefin tuna used in the cutting show is carefully chosen and delivered by Mr. Ishii, freshly cut and prepared for our guests. This is a very popular and spectacular event at Masuya. The door opens from 5:30 pm, and the cutting show will be starting at 5:45pm. Bluefin Tuna tasting menu $150 per person, 6-course, includes Mr. Kawaguchi's special bluefin tuna nigiri sushi, sashimi, fried tuna, oyster, wagyu beef appetiser, tempura and dessert.

The food was of great quality and flavour. Very reasonable prices compared to other Sydney Cbd Japanese restaurants. Will definitely return when we are back in Sydney.

Some of the best sushi I have had in Sydney, sashimi was fantastic. Lovely restaurant and very friendly staff. Large menu with lots of great options and great value for money - I will be back

Wonderful setting underground with very friendly staff. Seemed to be very full lunchtime. However, the signature bento had a poor cutting of fish that I couldn't chew and the portions weren't great. No rice and just one single prawn tempura for $37. Not very good value even if it is in the CBD. I will probably look at an alternative next time.

The service started off a being very attentive. I was however surprised that there were no soy sauce bottle containers on the table, we were provided with a little saucer with it. It was fine the first time we asked for a refill of soy sauce but then the place started getting busy and we would have waited at least 5 minutes to get someone’s attention in order to get a refill. Why not just leave a bottle at the table? The other thing I didn’t like was the extra large size of rolls (in diameter). Too big to eat it in one bite so in the end it just all falls apart. Instead of making them thicker why not longer? The rest of the food was ok but having to ask to get a refill of soy sauce on my individual saucer was a real deal breaker.
