Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits. We look forward to seeing you!

The food was good, the ambience ok (I don’t like dining to music that over emphasizes bass notes), and our server was nice. Our interaction with the restaurant manager ruined our experience. The time between appetizer and main course felt too long to us - about 35-40 minutes - so we spoke to the manager. When we said that we felt we’d waited 35-40 minutes for our main course, instead of apologizing for the delay he gave us an explanation - which felt like a lecture! - on the amount of time it takes to make our meal (“15-18minutes”), and more and more and more. This “conversation” went back and forth with his ‘lecture’ continuing, even including, at my ask, to see the computer printout of the times each course were done, which he showed us. No matter, our experience was ruined. And rather apologize for the delay IMMEDIATELY, we got a lecture. Only upon asking for the check were we told desserts were on the house. A simple “I’m sorry you waited long for your meal and dessert is on us” was all that was needed, and all that was appropriate.

My husband and I went to Market Place Tavern this week. The mezze was good. However my shrimp for the caesar salad was not freshly cooked. They did make me some more but it made the meal somewhat even. The place is pretty cool and our server was very nice.

It is always fun to have a meal in the jailhouse! There are many choices from the menu and bar. Last night was a little off - maybe because of it being Memorial Day Weekend.

Previously a jail house. The ambiance is pretty unique and interesting. Food was very good but vegetables were very undercooked. Our server was one of the nicest and most pleasant young ladies we have experienced in awhile. The bill was reasonable for a family of 5. We will be back.

It was our first time here, and we were hoping for a delicious date night dinner. The food was generally good, but nothing was great. Neither the fried cauliflower or chicken sandwich came out hot, and the fish/chips had no seasoning at all. The building was very cool, and we truly wanted to like the place, but it's unlikely that we'll be coming back.
