Lovely food and service. Birthday Tiramisu was a surprise
Mare is now my favorite restaurant in Boston! The service was impeccable and the food was absolutely to die for!! Pricing is a little on the expensive side, but it’s 100% worth it! Make sure you try the trio crudo and lobster spring rolls for apps. The swordfish was melt-in-your-mouth worthy and the oysters were so fresh!! Can’t wait to come back!
The food was excellent and the very attentive service outstanding!
The cocktails were amazing, service top-notch, and loved the cozy but comfortable atmosphere; however, the food was a bit of a disappointment. The best thing we had were the mussels — the tomato broth was amazing and total old-school perfection. Grilled octopus was pretty chewy, but maybe it’s the time of year? The boar parpadelle was extremely mushroom forward, and lacked salt. (It was almost like eating carnitas meat at Chipotle.) Re: the surf and turf that was billed as the “chef’s favorite”: The steak was over, and the seafood was under, lobster mashed potatoes were simply re-heated mash mixed with steamed lobster. Dessert was...fine? Nothing special, and I expected more from their tiramisu.
It was definitely not worth the 300-plus for two. Overall, a bummer; if we were to visit again, it would be just for the cocktails and mussels! (And great service!)
Finest Italian Seafood on the East Coast, served with impeccable timing and graciousness, in a lively venue redolent of some steak gem in Northern Italy.
Very average food all around for a high price. Tight space, we didn’t enjoy eating on top of another table. Not something to write home about, if I’m spending $200+ for dinner for two, I expect much better all around
Ambiance is really lovely, though the tables are a little tight. Food and wine was delicious. Service was good, a little sparse but our party was very low key and didn’t need much attention.
Very good. Went here for a birthday dinner. The service was especially great, wait staff very concerned with our happiness.
The restaurant has overall good food, in particular the oysters are very good. Lobster ravioli are excellent, the risotto was not that great - consistency and flavor could have been better. Our bottle of white wine was not great. Overall the restaurant is too densely seated and tries to have too many guests. Also there are simply not enough restrooms for the number of guests.
Great location and food. Atmosphere is lovely. This was my first time dining here. Highly recommend and will return.
Mare is a nice North End restaurant with good food and ambiance. Our server was very good and did not intrude on our dinner while providing everything we needed.
Traveled into Boston for date night. Picked Mare for close proximity to our comedy show. Thought the location was a little weird, down an alley to the front door, Mechanic St isnt really a street. The inside was very nice, a clean classic look with comfortable padded chairs. The tables were close and it made for some awkward shimmying and side stepping to get through to the bathroom or the door. If your looking for intimate and private this isnt your spot but my husband and I still had a great dinner and interacted with the people around us for a fun time. Food was on point, had the fried calamari that came out quick and was cooked perfectly. I had the braised boar over pappardelle and it was delicious. Drinks were also made well. All in all I would recommend this place and would go again for sure.
Tables are super close together. Service was good - although he could have been more helpful with recommendations. Calamari was soggy and not good at all. Entrees were better. For price paid, it was just an OK experience. Wouldn’t go back- too ma y other great places in Boston.
Excellent service and very helpful wait staff. Food was absolutely delicious!! A little pricey so great for a special occasion.
Great place, wine, apps, and entrees! Would definitely go back!
The ambiance, food and service were all wonderful. It was a great way to start the night before a concert at the TD Garden.
2nd visit - even better than the first. Fabulous food, great service! A bit tight for proximity to neighboring diners, but worked fine for us.
Absolutely excellent, food and service was phenomenal. A definite to put on your list
Excellent service, food presentation and outstanding oysters!!!
We ordered lobster bisque, Maine Peekytoe crabcake and risotto di mare. They were all served barely warm and not suffiently salted. Hence we have to add salt and pepper that, by the way, were not available on the table, neither freshly grinded when provided. Overall the service was poor, including menus left on cutlery and spotted table cloth. Not a great dining experience.
Seafood was amazingly fresh. Service was great!! Indoor dining area was a bit cold in winter climate. Overall loved it!!
Had a reservation and was told the table wasn't ready and it'd be a few minutes. An hour later and being told on a few occasions we we're next, we left as we were never seated.
You should tell people when you don’t accept certain credit card companies. Service wasn’t that good. Meals were okay. I used to love this place but I don’t think I will ever be back.
Loved Mare! First time dining there on a recent visit to Boston. Down a short alley off a crowded North End street. Great vibe, very knowledgeable service personnel. Handled my gluten free diet with ease, providing many recommendations. The freshest seafood; very generous portions. Great wine selection.
Would definitely return!
One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Celebrated anniversary here, and while it’s a bit pricey, it’s totally worth it.
The review is the least friendly thing, a bit to PC---paleo friendly, c'mon.
Food, service and ambiance are excellent. Special occasion, group, or casual. Diverse wait staff a plus. Staff was flexible to our requests. We will be back soon.
I took my husband here for his birthday and we had an amazing experience. He loved the lobster roll and I was surprised by my fruttu di mare. They are known for their Oyster selection and they make sure to stand up to that expectation or rather exceed most of the time. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
This was our second visit to Mare and as I relayed to my wife, we are sufficiently impressed to where this will be our restaurant of choice in Boston. Exceptional service, caring friendly staff, excellent menu and a very pleasant atmosphere.
We had our Uber drop us off and we still got lost going here. It’s on a side alley with no signage on the street showing where the restaurant was. Once inside and seated, we noticed immediately that the tables were way too close together. We sat for a table of 2 and ended up basically being on a 3 way date with the tables next to us because of how close they were to one another. No private conversations with tables barely 12 inches apart. This made things quite awkward. Once we decided we weren’t exactly starving after our apps, we ordered another small plate which our waiter seemed annoyed about. Guess he was more concerned about us ordering entrees for a higher tip, which was disappointing. Extremely disappointed in this establishment after being very excited to try something new. Do not plan to return.
The surf and turf app was amazing. Gnocchi was ok. Just not my style...make sure to ask for house water or you will end up paying $7ish for flat water. Cool ambiance
Mare is a really beautiful restaurant in the North End. Went with a friend and we were looking forward to it as we had heard such great things. Appetizers were fantastic (octopus and stuffed calamari), fish entrees were bland. We ordered cocktails and our waiter never came over to see if we wanted another drink the whole meal. The service was pretty dismal. Expensive restaurant for a pretty poor experience.
Great atmosphere. Great service and food A little pricey
The food is delicious. The ambience is fine but not special. Service was slow and at the end of the night the smell of sewage was enough to make you gasp. When we went to get the car, it was on with the keys inside and no one around. Nobody took our ticket. We got in and left. Anyone could have done that. A disappointing evening after hearing such rave reviews.
Good food. Polite, friendly service. Noisy during Friday night dinner.
Very nice restaurant tucked away in The North End. The food was excellent and portions large. Fried calamari was delicious. Seafood risotto was very good, as well as surf and turf. The meal was a bit pricey but well worth it. Tables were very close together, but the atmosphere was lively.
Waited 45 minutes after placing our dinner order before we received it, and that was after asking the waitress twice. Also asked is the salmon was farmed or wild, she was confused by the question & said that she would check. She never checked, I ordered something else. The food was ok, not great.
I had high expectations from reading previous reviews. Reservation was for 8, and we got seated around 8:30, which wouldn’t have been a big deal but the bar was crowded and it was difficult to find a place to stand. When we got seated, the service was alright, but appeared to be understaffed and we had to wait awhile for everything. Raw bar was good, but our entrees were very bad. I guess what’s what you get for ordering not raw bar at such a restaurant but I assumed the filet and seafood gnocchi would be much better. They were essentially tasteless and I was upset we spent so much on this disappointing meal. I don’t even like complaining and it takes a lot for me to be upset at a meal, but I really wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone except for maybe some oysters and a cocktail.
Excellent service, outstanding atmosphere, and an impressive selection of food and wine.
As always, Mare was wonderful. We started with a bottle of the Ferrari sparkling wine and a half-dozen east coast oysters. The oysters were fresh, and depending on the meroir briny or creamy. The batter on the zucchini blossoms (2 large ones) was thin and crunchy complementing the ricotta and lobster filling. We also loved the kampachi tartare with the smooth avocado acting as a counterpoint to a little spice. We shared the lobster and truffle tagliatelle - nicely sized for sharing to finish our meal. Everything was excellent including the attentive service. Mare is one of our favorite restaurants in Boston.
