Mediterranean cuisine is a way of life, one that respects the land, the people, and the way we eat. These principles are mirrored in Hawaiian culture and MARA Restaurant & Bar celebrates this connection by highlighting the historical cuisines of modern day Greece, Italy, and beyond while working in harmony with the bounty of ingredients from Hawaii’s plentiful and revered āina, from mauka to makai. Central to MARA’s culinary journey is a rotating fresh market seafood list where guests are invited to select their preferred fish and preparation inspired by the various cuisines that encompass the Mediterranean Basin. Our chef’s creativity is complemented by an elevated beverage program showcasing bespoke cocktails with in-house-made elements and a world-class wine list. Join us on this exploration and let your mind, body, and soul set sail across the Mediterranean.

We are beyond honored to welcome Shelley Lindgren—renowned wine director, sommelier, author, and co-owner of San Francisco’s legendary A16—to Honolulu for a very special afternoon of Italian wine tasting and book signing. For over two decades, Shelley has been one of the country’s most passionate and influential voices for Italy’s wine traditions—especially the soulful, lesser-known grapes and producers that form the backbone of the country’s regional identity. A16 is now celebrating its 21st year in business, a remarkable milestone in today’s restaurant world. Shelley’s work has reshaped how an entire generation of sommeliers and wine lovers experience Italian wine—earning her and A16 the James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine Program in 2015, and even recognition from the Italian government itself. In a rare and humbling honor, she was named a “Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia,” a knighthood acknowledging her tireless efforts to uplift and preserve Italy’s native grapes and forgotten regions. Her advocacy hasn’t just changed wine lists—it’s created a ripple effect in culture, appreciation, and access. Shelley is also the author of Italian Wine, a beautifully written, deeply researched, and refreshingly approachable reference that bridges the gap between enthusiast and expert. At this event, she’ll be signing copies of her latest book while guiding guests through a tasting of four distinct and expressive Italian wines: – 2022 Penna-Currado ‘Bricco Lago’ (Dolcetto, Piedmont) – 2021 Monteleone Etna Rosso (Nerello Mascalese, Sicily) – 2022 Caravaglio Salina Bianco (Malvasia, Aeolian Islands) – 2020 Marisa Cuomo ‘Ravello’ Bianco (Costa d’Amalfi) Each wine brings its own personality, story, and terroir to the table—whether from dramatic coastal cliffs, high-elevation volcanic soils, or quiet alpine hillsides. This tasting is a celebration of regionality, authenticity, and the kind of soulful winemaking that Shelley has championed her entire career. We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Shelley and the A16 team, and to help bring a little of that magic to Hawaii. Come raise a glass with us—taste something new, ask questions, get a book signed, and celebrate the spirit of Italian wine, island-style.

Tonight, we gather for a celebration of all things soulful, honest, and delicious—a dinner that honors the producers, regions, and philosophies behind the wines imported by Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant. This evening isn’t just about what’s in the glass or on the plate—it’s about the people, places, and stories that make them matter. Kermit Lynch is a name that carries weight in the wine world—not for flash, but for integrity. As one of the most influential importers of French and Italian wine in the U.S., Kermit built his reputation by seeking out small, family-run estates that work in harmony with their land, farm with intention, and express a sense of place in every bottle. These wines don’t chase trends—they reflect terroir, history, and the quiet poetry of restraint. In the spirit of that philosophy, we’ve crafted a menu rooted in seasonal ingredients, regional traditions, and the idea of balance. You’ll find simplicity paired with precision, and humble ingredients elevated through craft. Our aim is to spark conversation and deepen your connection to these wines and the cultures they represent. We are honored to host this dinner with Joanie Bonfiglio of Kermit Lynch Wine Merchants—a dear family friend and one of the heartbeats of this remarkable company. Joanie cares deeply about her work and the producers she represents. Her pride for all things wine and Kermit Lynch is matched only by her warmth—she’s a true ray of sunshine. We’re excited to hear her thoughts on these wines, regions, and producers, helping us better understand the meaning and magic in every bottle. We begin with Insalata Primavera, a bright, textured start featuring spring vegetables and creamy burrata. The two wines—one from Liguria’s seaside hills, the other from Puglia’s sun-soaked Itria Valley—contrast briny minerality with fragrant aromatic lift. Next, the classic Raviolo al Uovo is paired with two expressions of Chianti Classico—each a deep dive into the soul of Tuscany, where Sangiovese reigns. One is regal and polished, the other rustic and energetic—both reminding us why this region continues to enchant wine lovers. The centerpiece, Lamb Shank with Salsa Verde and Spinach Gnudi, unites boldness and nuance. It’s matched with two reds from opposite ends of Italy—one from the alpine freshness of Piedmont, the other from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Their contrast speaks to the range and beauty of Italian wine. And of course, we finish with Tiramisù, because no Italian celebration is complete without it. This dinner is our way of saying thank you—to the growers, the winemakers, the importer, and to you. These wines weren’t chosen just for their taste—they were chosen because they stand for something. They tell a story. And we’re honored to share them with you. Benvenuti.

Join us for an unforgettable evening as we celebrate the reintroduction of our restaurant under a new name — Sera — with a one-night-only collaboration alongside the acclaimed team from A16 in San Francisco. This dinner is more than a showcase — it’s a shared expression of passion, craft, and community. Chef Arnold (Sera) and Chef Yosuke (A16) took turns crafting each course, building a menu that moves between their styles, regions, and inspirations. On the wine side, Shelley (A16) and Kale (Sera) paired each dish with wines that speak to both tradition and discovery — creating a dialogue between cellar and kitchen. This is a true collaboration — designed not only for the enjoyment of our guests but also as an opportunity for our teams to learn from one another. It represents what we believe is possible when we come together: thoughtful hospitality, layered storytelling, and the joy of sharing something exceptional. Bun on fish sandwich was hard. Didn’t like the pancakes, too thick. Waiter was more than pleasant. French fries good.

Service was excellent. Food and drink were good. A bit pricey for what you got but if quantity is not an issue and taste is, I would give it a try.

Service and food were excellent. Would eat here again. Had the chicken sandwich and fish sandwich each with salad for lunch. Had the yogurt with sour cherries and a separate yogurt with baklava and honey toppings. Ono.

It's about time we got to experience this style of food in Hawaii, and it's truly disappointing to learn that Mara is changing the concept due to complications with the management company and hotels owners. The mezze trio of dips is worth the trip alone, and the cocktails are delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. The worst part was the kitchen, slow, and a bit off their game this time. They covered the Octopus dish with Ogo, which wasn't listed on the menu, and made it virtually inedible. We sent it back. The fritto misto was wonderful. I hope someone can come in and save this place. It's beautiful, unique, and delicious. It will be a shame to see it shutter so quickly.

So went for a double date with friends. The food was ok. The parking is so ridiculous. Even with the validation it was 18 dollars just to have lunch. If they didn’t it would have been 45 dollars. That’s absolutely crazy. We won’t be back due to this.

The food was delicious and filling. We ordered the tasting trio (the spreads were all yummy, but the bread—OMG! Had to get another piece!) we also had the falafel which had some kick to it. Honestly, after that we were stuffed, and ended up taking home the Potato’s bravas, Brussel sprouts, and fattoush salad…bites of them all were delicious. The service was slow. Friendly and helpful, just slow. There was no reason our “starters , sides, and mezze meal” should have taken two hours. It was a large spacious restaurant. Parking is a tad confusing and the gate wouldn’t let us out so we needed to park and get the hotel concierge to let us out.
