Manuel's Downtown Ratings and Reviews
This is a GREAT restaurant. Really clean interior Mexican food. No compromise on ingredient quality. Creative yet authentic. Long time Austin residents mingle with the new Austin tech elite over the absolute best margaritas in town. The owners care and it shows. Friendly. From seafood to carne this is where to come. Do get the queso app. Do get the 310 Margarita. Relax, you found the best in town. Wonderful old stone walls and comfortable booths.....Muy Bueno!
Manuel’s has mind-blowingly delicious food. I stopped here with my fiancé on our first trip to Austin, and it’s definitely a highlight of our trip. The lighting was intimate and classy, the service was prompt and friendly, and did I mention the food? Because it’s absolutely delightful.
Dinner was great. I had beef fajitas and everything tasted very fresh. My partner had the chicken mole and the sauce was REALLY good. Both dishes had great flavor.
Drinks were ok, but nothing "special." The space was beautiful, and we ended up with a nice corner table at the front, right next to the window, so that was lovely.
My only complaint is that I noted it was my birthday on the reservation. The hostess didn't acknowledeg it and neither did the server. Also, I tried to attach my dining reward, but the $20 reward was not applied to the bill. In this case, booking through Open Table seemed to yield very little value.
Had a great dinner with friends and we all tried something different on the menu. The mole sauce is awesome, enchiladas all fantastic including the sides. Loved our home made margaritas! Salsa that comes with the table was average- a bit spicy for all as to why I gave the four stars and ambience seems like a sushi/asian restaurant but still nice and swanky. Service was excellent. Would recommend!
We've been visiting Manuel's for 20 something years. It's always awesome. The food is marvelous, even my picky 13 year old granddaughter loved her meal. They were very accommodating to her vegetarian needs also. It's not very expensive really, especially for a hot spot on Congress Street. We will be back!
We have eaten at Manuel's for 30+ years and always enjoy the food & experience. We had a slightly off putting experience this time. We all ordered 310 Margaritas and the waiter said they had a "special margarita" that night: The Skinny. He said it was the same as the 310, but less sweet. We all thought, "Great, less sugar," and switched our orders. It turns out the special offer was $4 more per drink, more expensive that all the Margaritas on the menu. We felt taken advantage of. It was not how e expected to be treated at Manuel's. It is true we didn't ask the price, but based on our past experiences, we didn't feel we would need to. We will go back, but will be more careful.
We had a great time at Manuel’s. We got there early on Weds evening and sat at the bar at happy hour before our dinner. The bartender, Marco, accommodated my request to make a mixed drink with mezcal, though none was on the menu. While I was drinking it, one of the owners came by and offered me a shot of it in addition to my drink. That was very much appreciated and indicative of the attitude of all employees as well.
We started talking to Marco about dinner choices, when he began reaving about the mole sauce. When we expressed interest, he got a small amount in a cup for us to sample with our chips. When I was ordering dinner a little while later, I told our waiter I could not decide between the mole and another sauce. Without hesitation, he offered to have one sauce on one enchilada and the other sauce on the second enchilada. Both were great, as were my wife’s fajitas.
Everything was so good, we went back on Friday evening and again enjoyed dinner, though Marco was not there; and the restaurant was more busy. Our waiter Patrick could not have been more accommodating in his suggestions and service.
Seated quickly but service was poor. Server took a long time to talk to us - 15 minutes. Drinks and food slow to arrive. Little follow-up. Food was marginal. It was VERY loud - the music was at an 9 - combined with loud guests it was too much and not in a good way. May be good atmosphere for a bachlorette party but not for a typical evening out.
I've heard so many great things about Manuel's, but we had a really lack-luster experience. We had guacamole, enchiladas, tacos, and several margaritas and the overall review from the table was that the food was all way too salty. The drinks were good, but there are SO many better Mexican restaurants in Austin, and the ambiance was nothing special.
