The food was great! Loved the chive waffles. Our waitress was outstanding. We will return!
Food was delicious and the service was great! We also went upstairs and enjoyed the rooftop bar and it was lovely
We made 5:30 reservations on dec 23, and when we got there, they said their restaurant was closed until dec 27. We drove over an hour and a half in the rain from oc to eat here. We were extremely disappointed. Not sure if that was an open table mistake or the restaurant.
Hello, we are sorry you had a long drive to Mama in the rain. Unexpectedly, we had to close our restaurant because of Covid. The suddenness of the virus took us all by surprise and we were not able to notify reservations in a timely manner. We are sorry to have inconvenienced you and hope to hear from you and take care of you in 2022. Happy holidays, Mama
It was close

Good food, over
Really unimpressed with food and cocktails. Everything seemed to be missing salt or acid or both. Artichoke dish is a real miss. Impossible to chew overly fried/charred leaves on hearts, and hearts were so small that eating those alone meant barely any taste. “Crusted” fish was a steak of Opah with a soggy, mushy dukah piled on top of it and in the dish—nothing was “crusted.” Even cheesecake was bland and missing brightness to blood orange sauce. Will not return or recommend to others.
Thanks, williamt, for dining at Mama Shelter. We are sorry to have not provided you with the right balance of flavors when you joined us. We hope circumstance or friends bring you back to try us a second time, and that you are more favorably impressed. Happy holidays, Mama
The worst food ever
Thank you for dining at Mama Shelter. Best wishes, Mama
Hello, we appreciate your dining with us--and are disappointed that we failed to provide you with great service. We will continue to work as a team to give each and every guest exactly what they need. Best wishes, Mama
A bug crawled from Under my plate as they brought it to me. They offered to make me another meal but didn’t comp it… how rude !!!
Food and drinks are great. Service was horrible considering they add the gratuity to the bill. Asked to move spots because it smelled like sewage by the bathroom and the manager told us that it’s Hollywood that’s how it always smells and said they couldn’t move us.
Hello Yungitaly, we greatly appreciate your comments. While we are happy that the food and drinks were great, we are disappointed to hear that our manager handled your request poorly. The smells of a bathroom should never impact a dining experience. We hope you come back soon, so we can treat you right. Love, Mama
If you enjoy adventurous combinations of flavors, this restaurant might be for you, unless you expect that the taste combinations will actually work together. The brussels sprouts in butternut squash/coconut milk mousse was actually quite interesting (the best dish). The only issue was the sprouts were way too salty (and I like salt). The beet salad with persimmons and smoked ricotta sounded really interesting. It is not really a salad in that there are no greens or anything crunchy. The persimmon had a bit too much salt, the beets were pretty good, but what they called smoked ricotta was a cream with no texture that tasted purely of smoke flavoring. No umami, no saltiness or cheesiness, the only flavor was wood smoke. It started to make me feel sick after a while. My husband got the raviolo with lamb filling. The raviolo was undercooked and unevenly cooked, the filling was cold and he disliked it so much he sent it back. He actually told the waitress it was "gross," which in our many years of dining together I've never heard him say about anything. He's actually never sent a dish back since I've known him. They graciously took the dish off our bill, and brought him the Swordfish schnitzel. It was OK, but it had a potato salad that was off-putting. Who makes a mustard-based potato salad with sweet potatoes? It just didn't work. The other dish I got was the second-best after the brussels sprouts. It was a vegan mushroom cannelloni. The flavor and texture were nice, but it had a soup of oil in the dish that I ended up pouring off into my small plate because it was so drowned in oil. The oil solidified into a quite solid layer of congealed fat in the dish. Turned out it was vegan butter. I was quite glad I'd poured off so much of it so it wasn't in my arteries instead of in my plate, but it was definitely way too much fat drowning an already rich dish. Overall, I'd rate the ambiance highly and the service pretty good, but I would not eat there again, personally.
Thank you, MeriL, for your dining at Mama Shelter Downstairs. We appreciate all the feedback, and your review has us reviewing each of these dishes to make sure they are superb. We hope you come back soon to provide even more candid feedback. Happy holidays, Mama
My husband got his hamburger about ten to fifteen minutes before I got my rice bowl and they charged 18% tip.
Hi Sofia, thank you for dining at Mama Shelter. We appreciate your having lunch with us--and hope that you try us again, perhaps at our special Happy Hour in the bar featuring $3 beer and really low prices on spirits and wine!
Amazing food and service! A bit pricey but worth it nevertheless.
RayB, thanks for raving about our service and food--and we hope you come back to try us again and again. We have reduced a few prices, too, to remain the best value possible. Love, Mama
Came in, they requested ID and VAX card upon entry. Our party of 3 didn't arrive at the same time but we could not be seated until everyone was there... ok. The server was great she had great recommendations. We were seeing a play nearby so we did the crabcakes and brussel sprouts. both were tasty. I would definitely return.
BeeD, thanks for your dining at Mama Shelter Downstairs and for your praise of our server, crab cakes, and Brussels sprouts! We look forward to your quick return. Love, Mama
The brussel sprout were amazing! It’s was quite busy and crowded as we were waiting inside to be seated but other than that, amazing!
Very fun spot close to some venues (we went before a show at the Fonda which was a short walk). Fairly small menu but really delicious shared plates (brussels sprouts were amazing!) Really great service - attentive but not overwhelming. Visited the roof bar after which was a great spot for a pre or post dinner drink. Downstairs and roof had such great energy, was a fun way to start the night.
Pretty good food but tables are super close to one another. And the noise level is through the roof. It was hard to have a conversation.
Oh and when we entered , the door guy put me in my place so watch out for him. Typical Hollywood lameness.
Mama’s has always been our go to place to meet up with friends for Sunday brunch pre pandemic. This was our first time back. Always relaxing and service is great. Though the menu had changed to a lesser degree and the prices had gone up considerably. Overall a nice experience, but will frequent less often because of their new pricing.
We brought a very nice older 375l wine bottle. First they refused to open for us then the manager changed his mind. The waitress broke the cork and I had to get the rest out myself. I poured the 2 glasses and even gave the waitress a taste. When the bill came they charged me $40 corkage plus a mandatory 18.69 percent tip on top of it so I paid $48 for opening up my own bottle. He should’ve at least given me the courtesy of informing me the charge prior so I could’ve decided if I wanted to pay it or not. The food was overly creative some combinations were OK but mostly overwrought. Four dollar bread service was two measly pieces of white toast with nothing to accompany them.
Needless to say we won’t be back
I had been to Mama Shelter a few weeks ago and was blown away by their new chef and new menu. The server kept going on and on about the Mama Shelter Renaissance. He was pleasantly offbeat without compromising his service and attention to detail.
Covid shutdowns gave us an opportunity to assess and reevaluate the quality of our lives. Mama Shelter has done the same; and they did not disappoint. Chef Jeanne Jordan; and HER staff offer a delicious, locally sourced, and focused spin on California Fresh cuisine. Like Los Angeles, Ms. Jordan's dishes are an amalgamation of everything we love about our city. It was incredible to see a restaurant survive the Covid closures and come back so strong. Mama offers a communal experience that reignites relationships and brings people back together through food.
So, I brought my friend on Saturday. I was surprised to see a new menu, again! The WINTER menu - a sign that Ms. Jordan is only using fresh and seasonally available ingredients. My favorite, the tuna tartare, was still available; plus, the brussel sprouts and short rib. The winter menu certainly came through. We ordered just about everything it seemed. I had the short rib again! Our crab croquettes were so crispy and perfectly gooey. The beet salad was insane. I loved the baci pasta... beets inside a pasta. Who does that?! Then it was time for dessert! We had a poached pear and honey nut squash mousse. Vegetables for dessert Whaaaat?!?! That's crazy, but that mousse was one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life. It gave me sweet potato pie vibes like an early Christmas present. I'm definitely going back to try the rest of the menu. I really want to try their grilled fish, risotto, and fried rabbit.
It was 6pm and the place was bustling! Mel was a fantastic server, but everyone chipped in at some point. They were awesome! Mama Shelter is a good spot if you like ridiculously delicious and adventurous cuisine in a low-key, yet vibrant atmosphere. 10/10
The food was great. No doubt about that. The tartare was one of our favorites. The short rib was also excellent. My challenge was the pace of the mea. Three of us came for dinner at 7, we had no where to be afterwards and all our plates were out and done by 745. I actually had to ask after the first round to slow down service. 4 plates were brought it out at the same time and they were the heaviest items. I was also looking into the kitchen and there was a shelf on the right side that looked so incredibly messy. The kitchen itself didn’t look very clean, that was concerning for us
OMG!!! What a fantastic experience. My fiancé and I went here last night, and everything was incredible. The hostess Zoe was so friendly and enthusiastic, she began the night with a light that carried thru, and our server Melany was absolutely on point. We felt like we were being helped by not just professionals, but friends. We were blown away.
And the decor was so warm, inviting and homey. The ceiling alone is a true piece of inspirational art and poetry.
I'm celiac, and since most of the menu was naturally gluten-free, I was in near heaven by the options.
We ordered a bottle of a naturally fermented sparkling wine from Lebanon, that was delightfuly crisp, refreshing with hints of apple and floral tones.
Then came the Tuna Tartar... I will be dreaming of this dish. Hands down one of the best tuna tartars have ever had.
Next was the roasted Brussel Sprouts. My fiancé is NOT a Brussel Sprout fan, but the slight crunch and flavors were so smooth and complimentary, that even she couldn't stop eating them.
That was followed by some delightful Broccolini with roasted leaks and Manchego cheese... YUM!!!
Next came the Duck Breast with blood orange sauce. ABSOFRIGINI CREDIBLE!!! Some of the best duck breast I have hid in millenia. An absolute must!!!
and lastly was the mushroom Risotto with egg yolk. So smooth, creamy, and full of all the right flavors.
If you don't visit Mama Shelter (downstairs) than you are missing out on some of the best dining in L.A.
DeviantGourmet--we are so impressed by your review--we read it together as a team and got excited reading all your descriptions (and the praise made us blush, too). We love that your enjoyed yourselves and hope to have you come many times to Mama Shelter Downstairs. Our Chefs, Beverage Director, and service team are blown away. With the greatest appreciation, Mama Shelter
If you ask the rooftop bartenders for a great tequila-based cocktail that’s not on the menu, they’ll make it (hopefully) and it’s amazing! The bartender from the other night made my group of friends 10+ cocktails so quickly and efficiently.
Our bartenders have lots of tricks up their sleeves--seriously, some of them work at Magic Castle! Thanks for your note of praise, Mama Shelter
The atmosphere was so pretty and the foods and cocktails was good! Especially banana chocolate dessert was amazing! All of Staffs were super nice! Must go place in hollywood
Dinner was excellent. Service, excellent. Cocktails, excellent. I would happily go back and recommend to any one looking for a great meal in Hollywood.
The best tuna tarter
Arieli--thank you for dining at Mama Shelter and for saying that our tuna tartare is the best ever! WOW!
The drinks & seasonal menu were great, and our waitress Stephanie was absolutely wonderful and personable! She took the time to recommend items and explain each dish. At the end of our dinner, she even offered to help us get in to the rooftop afterwards! Overall, we had a lovely dining experience!
Shannon8--thank you for having dinner at Mama Shelter Downstairs and for your visit to the roof afterwards. Most of all, thank you for praising Stephanie! We think she is awesome. Best wishes, Mama Shelter

Nicole, we greatly appreciate your praising Chris and our restaurant. We hope to see you again, very soon. Best wishes, Mama Shelter
Never received text for rooftop waitlist. Unfortunately made reservations for birthday celebration and never made it to the roof.
So great. Food was amazing with outstanding service! So great to Hollywood returning to normal this place is a must try!
Your review is so wonderful to read. We are happy to be open in Hollywood and providing a great place to eat and drink. Come back soon. We hope to see you at our happy hour where we feature $3 beer, $4 wine, and $7 well drinks!
Our server was really nice and energetic. They offered a lot of suggestions on what to order and gave us their personal favorites. Although it seemed like it was busy we got our food pretty quick.
Saul, thanks for dining at Mama Shelter Downstairs and for your excellent comments about our service. We hope to see you again real soon.
The food was not great. Exceptional service, but food was lacking.

Thank you, MaryKayS for dining at Mama Shelter Downstairs and for providing us with a five-star review. Best wishes,
Very cool vibe!
We appreciate you noticing our "cool vibe" and hope you come back very soon for more good vibes!
Dining in the restaurant is a much better dining experience than on the roof top. Service was much better, too. I would recommend the rooftop only for cocktails and appetizers.
The food was amazing! We had to wait a while when we got there, even though we had a reservation, but the wait wasn’t too bad. The only thing I personally would like was if it wasn’t so loud, but everything else was fantastic!
BrielleE thank you for dining at Mama Shelter Downstairs. We appreciate your five-star review of our food (and the rest of our restaurant). We look forward to you joining us again soon. Best wishes,
When we got there a white gentleman received us . It was very empty at 11:30 and I wanted a view but he would not accommodate my wishes. The asked for a glass of wine and he hesitated and then said let me go get a wine list. I said hold on get me a Chardonnay. Not exactly what you want at a restaurant . I almost felt guilty for asking!
Also I as going to be at the rooftop and was told that it was closed for construction. I wish I’d known this before on the website.
The black lady was very nice and friendly . She served us most of the time. She was excellent and made us feel wanted and even gave us alot of information about the chain of restaurants and how it stated with 2 grandmas . There was also another black gentlemen who was eating people at the front and he was super friendly and nice.
Thanks for trying Mama Shelter downstairs. Our rooftop opens at 12pm each day but does not take reservations. I am happy that a couple of our staff made a very good impression with you doing your visit--and hope you come back soon to try our dining and rooftop. Best wishes,
We had been here previously for drinks one afternoon and were a excited to come back for dinner. Unfortunately when we returned the menu options were a little lackluster. After reviewing we decided to start with sharing an entree as an appetizer and would go from there. We chose the chicken cordon Bleu and a couple fo the cocktails off the menu. The drinks were good, but the chicken cordon Bleu came out as a very small serving. The worst part was that it tasted like something that came out of the freezer and had been reheated. The ham had been ground up and tasted really off. Needless to say we didn’t bother to order any other food and just left after we finished our drinks. The drinks were good- but will just stick with those if we ever visit again.
