I heard this was a wonderful place to watch the sunset, and that the food was good. We’ll, it was cloudy and showery the night we went, so the sunset was wasn’t visible. But, the food was better than good....it was wonderful. I had ahi and my wife had mahi-mahi. Both dishes were done to perfection, and the presentations were beautiful. The only negative....I thought the price for a cup (1, no refill offered) of decaf coffee was high....$8
We love Makana terrace and were there twice this week. Food was good but could use some additional variation on sides.
We were sorely disappointed in our server on Sunday evening. He was constantly unavailable and inattentive - even the bus staff were frustrated with him
Great atmosphere, great food, but very expensive!!
The waitress did not recognize my birthday although the host did.
Celebrating our daughter’s Birthday....perfect venue...overlooking Hanalei Bay beach during a sunset, & excellent food/service.
Certainly pricey but worth it. The views make for a worthwhile experience, food and drinks aside.
Waitress was not very helpful seemed a bit bored food was very good
Lovely spot for a special celebration. Delicious food, good service and beautiful scenery.
A beautiful place to dine. Food was excellent. I had crab cakes as my entree with rice and veggies. Husband's wine was super. My only negative was that I have had tastier creme brulee custard.
Food was good but the restaurant looks run down. With the change in management the property is not getting the high standard of care. This was an undecided outcome. Expected atmosphere for a high end resort not a outdated but good food property.
Service from “Pops” was outstanding. Sometimes you have great food at a restaurant and that creates a recommendation to others. Great food combined with memorable service creates a lifetime memory. Pops made the difference. Going back tomorrow night and sitting at Table 11, once again!!
we eat there regularly when we visit the island. Of course the view is spectacular, the service is very good. For some reason the entrees have become saltier to the point we are reluctant to go again. If we do return, hope we remember to ask for a reduction in salt.
An absolutely amazing restaurant with wonderful food, great service, and breathtaking views. I have always had wonderful experiences here over the years. Highly recommended.
Overall, very disappointing. The setting is remarkable, but the service and food did not live up to expectations. The server was quite unprofessional, not replacing silverware after the first course and not checking in at any time to find out how we were doing. The appetizers (salad and soup) were fine. In fact, the soup was very good, but it took ages for the main course to arrive and, when it did, the food was cold. We sent it back and then waited, and waited, and waited. The waiter did not replace the silverware we had used when we tasted the main course (we had to flag down his assistant to get clean place settings). No one came by to check on us and give us an update. When we finally caught the server’s attention, he said (abruptly) only that the food was coming in 5 minutes, but it didn’t, and he did not apologize for the wait or explain it. We left, willing to pay for what we’d had. The manager, however, was apologetic and did not charge us for what we’d had. He acted professionally. Perhaps we just had an inexperienced waiter, but you don’t expect an untrained server at a fancy, high-priced restaurant.
Wonderful food and view. Great for a romantic night out. Watermelon salad was excellent, as were the scallops. Too bad the hotel is closing in May.
Needs a facelift.
25th Wedding Anniversary. Great view and good food; disappointing that we were one of the first guests for dinner but 2 of the 3 fresh fish dishes were not available.
The breakfast buffet is lacking in every regard. This is Kauai, Hawaii — and yet there are few local fruit options. There is no one to make omelettes or eggs cooked to order, no poached egg dish, all standard at other five star resorts. And, sadly the coffee is not very good.
We stayed here a year ago and the breakfast buffet was excellent.
We had dinner at Makana thirteen years ago and it was so memorable for view, cuisine and service that we just had to repeat it when we vacationed again recently in Kauai. We were not disappointed!
Lovely evening! Well balanced menu, with a nice selection Always love a menu that takes time to decide because of so many desirable choices. Staff friendly and unrushed.
Great food, great view. Loved the carb cake and the fish main course. The desert options were limited and mostly on the extremely-sweet side. If they had a fabulous tiramisu on the menu, they'd get all 5 stars from me. The waiter wasn't a man of words, so if that's something you care about you might be a bit cheesed off. We'd love to go back to Makana Terrace. It's definitely the best food experience in Princeville.
We booked our reservation over 3 months ago and I called a feed before our reservation to reconfirm we had an unobstructed ocean view table, I was assured we would. When we arrived, early for our reso, the hostess tired to seat us in a table at back against the wall, with no view, by the bussing station, this was unacceptable and we voiced our displeasure, then they tried to seat us in an equally busy area with still virtually no view. There were several ocean front table available and when we asked about them were told they were for “A Rates” - and that they were for four people, we pointed out that there were couples sitting at the tables beside the empty ones. It is Valentine’s Day & the whole restaurant should be geared for tables for two, that’s restauranteur 101. Also why would you not have had 2 seatings to accommodate the elderly early birds and the rest of the clientele. It seems there was no thought put into anything for consideration of customers. We watched one after one of deuces come through the door disappointed with where the hostess was going to seat them, including ourselves. We spoke to other customers there and they didn’t even have a reservation and had a better table than us - what is the point in making a reservation. Now onto the meal. The Tuna Carpaccio was terrible, it was prepared too far in advance (the server even admitted it to us - thanks for the honesty), this was after we had sent it back. When we see carpaccio on a menu we always order it because it’s a barometer or an an indicator of the quality and care of what is being served. This was not the case at Makana Terrace. If you are a chef and the menu is not attainable (especially for quality), then don’t do it, it was such a disappointment. Next we had the bakes oysters and the raw oysters, why are they being served on the same plate? We tried them and ended up sending them back, raw oysters should be on ice. The Potato soup was nice and Beet and watermelon salad ok
Go here for the view it’s ridiculously beautiful. The food is mediocre and overpriced but you’re paying for the view anyways.
It's all about the view! The hotel has changed hands. Remodeling is planned but they are unsure of what happens to the restaurant and staff. (Kauai Grill is already closed, Makana Terrace no longer serves brunch or lunch). We are not appreciative of the way their long time staff is being treated with no information forthcoming as to their employment. That is reason enough to not come here anymore.
But the view is fabulous. Portions are much smaller now, prices are much higher now. But that view can't be beat!
The hotel seems quite deserted and they are no longer taking hotel reservations. But that view is the best.
We anxiously await the next steps of the new owners with hope that they will be fair to their long time employees and the locals that eat there.
Exceptional food with an unsurpassed view of Hanalei Bay. Hard to beat!
Wonderful with awesome views on our anniversary.
What a great place to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The food was outstanding, the service stellar and the view...... gorgeous!
Amazing place. Great food, service, views overlooking the volcano and waves of the ocean on a cliff. Not a review of the pool side service ( which would be 1 out of 5); the actual terrace restaurant is great.
Wonderful. Spectacular view. Enjoyed everything about you his meal.
It was a great experience. The food server was awesome. She made sure that we’re comfortable im our seats and she’s great at taking pictures for us. I will definitely go back here if we plan on going back in Hawaii as we lived in San Diego.
Excellent restaurant for a special occasion or just to experience the food and view!
Service not up to standards. Cost way to much for quality
Food, service, atmosphere were excellent.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal overlooking the.beautiful Napali Coast. All of the food was full of local flavors, local fresh veggies and local fish. The macadamia nut Manhattan was great too. Service was very attentive! Definitely will be back.
Our experience at Makana Terrace was outstanding! My wife and I both had the butter poached lobster. It was prepared excellently and presented beautifully! The service was great and everyone that served us was professional and courteous! The atmosphere was very elegant. We had the vanilla bean Creme Brulee for dessert and it was fabulous! The only issue was the price and the portions! The lobster tail was plenty, however the side of seasonal vegetables could have been greater for the price!!
Expensive and poor service
Delightful setting overlooking the bay. Food was terrific prices not over the top.
Our fish dinners improved from last year. All good, beautiful location. Speedy as usual.
