About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
  • Charming
"The Sherborne is a reborn wonder. Once a grand house with a staircase mural by Sir James Thornhill, whose other works include the paintings on the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, Sherborne House became so dilapidated that it was placed on the Heritage at Risk register. Now sensitively refurbished, it’s the town’s premier arts venue, with extensive galleries, an impressive events space and shop. The Sherborne also welcomes visitors to the popular Macready’s Restaurant and Bar, serving everything from light bites (from £12) to substantial main courses such as smoked ham hock with confit garlic and leek and pearl barley risotto (£22) and pan-fried gnocchi (£19.50), in an atmospheric and glamorous setting with attentive, unfussy service." As noted by Jon Woolcott in The 50 best museum cafes in the UK, The Guardian (15 April 2025)

This was our first experience of The Sherborne and indeed that of McCready's. It was first class. The service was charming, discreet and efficient and the food was top drawer. A really lovely experience on a Tuesday lunch time. Thank you.

It was a Sunday menu which was not a prob but only x1 veggie main. Risotto was rather an unappetising looking large bowl of it. Not a very interesting desert menu

Great addition to Sherborne, really can't fault the place. Excellent staff that are very well trained and add to the experience. The setting is superb and so much thought has gone into decor. I love the fact that they are using a lot of locally sourced food and the menu caters for all tastes. The big plus for us is that we live just up the road!!!

Excellent range of dishes with something just a cut above the routine in choice and use of ingredients.Desserts were a delight. Overall we had an excellent lunch dining experience following on from a visit to the wonderfully restored house and the exquisite current exhibition.

The kitchen is always outstanding, but the service is somewhat slow and chaotic as they appear short handed. Also we do not appreciate being addressed as ‘my love’. We found it overfamiliar especially as we waited a long time for the wine which arrived after our starter. In summary; good food but some of the staff certainly need further training.
