Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Joel Stocks

From the OpenTable editors: One of the New York Times's 50 favorite restaurants of 2024, L'Orange charms with its refined, Pacific Northwest-influenced Mediterranean small plates and superbly curated wine in a homey, cozy atmosphere. The combo quickly captivated local critics and diners, who show up in droves for dishes like roasted garlic soup with grapes or poached and grilled cauliflower with curried granola. It all obviously pairs beautifully with owner Jeff Vejr's large, varied selection.

Philosophy

At L'Orange we hope to transport you back to a time when full service dining was the norm. We hope that you feel the warmth of our space, the ease of our hospitality, and the delicious layers of flavors that our food and wine provide.

The tasting menu was full of surprises, most of them enjoyable. Many unusual flavor combinations were unexpected wins. A few however missed in our opinion. But the parade of offerings made for a delightful celebration. The wine pairings were all exceptional and delicious. Service was excellent. Our table in the intimate purple room was pleasant, although a woman in the adjoining blue room laughed boisterously and continuously during the 3 hour dining experience which was an annoyance. Overall, a memorable birthday splurge.

Such a lovely experience in this cozy spot! Food is delicious, servers are attentive and friendly, and even the chef delivered some of our food! I so appreciate the top quality food & service coupled with the relaxed atmosphere - it runs like a well-oiled machine without that feeling of being a cog in a machine. Eat here! You’ll love it!

Fine dining, fabulous service, funky place. We loved the food: pasta with shrimp, sturgeon, scallops crudo and asparagus. All were uniquely flavored and perfect. The service was seamless and attentive, and friendly. The l’Orange cake was heavenly, and we enjoyed several glasses of various Golden Cluster wines. But we could nearly touch elbows with the next table (other tables looked to have a bit more room) making conversation difficult. We could hear our neighbors, who spoke more loudly than us, more easily than each other. The food, atmosphere and service was reminiscent of Coquine (a compliment) but livelier. We will return, for sure, but will need to figure out the seating thing.

We enjoyed our meal and the environment in which it was served. The showstopper for us was the celeriac root soup; the asparagus dish also was excellent. Everything else we tried was good to very good. The room in which we were seated had the potential to be intimate and nice. However, a very loud party meant it was hard to hear each other. The waitstaff is helpful, knowledgeable, and passionate. Would love to see this caliber restaurant offering bread and butter rather than selling it. Wine pours could be a bit more generous. All in all an enjoyable experience though less memorable than had envisioned going in.

Loved the cozy ambience and great food here! This was our first meal on our summer vacation in the PNW and we have no regrets. We particularly enjoyed the asparagus and pork on the seasonal menu. Wine recommendations were great and we had a great time chatting with the personable service members. Highly recommend!

Great service and amazing food. The owner served us as we sat the bar. It is amazing how such great food comes out of the small kitchen. Wines were excellent.. Highly recommend the duck confit.

We felt welcomed and cared for. The food was delicious. Great selection of wines. We were not disappointed in the least all around. There are so many great choices in Portland, but this stands out due to the staff in additions to great food and drink.
