Warm, cozy prohibition era decor in Victoria's 'Old Town". In 1882 Harry Johnson first published the Bartenders’ Manual/Guide for Hotels and Restaurants. He is still known today for his sagacious writings on service excellence and customer care. He bought the Little Jumbo Saloon in New York from a peer and rival named Jerry Thomas who had founded it in 1866. Because of Thomas’ pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States; he is considered "the father of American mixology”. In addition to writing the seminal work on cocktails, his creativity and showmanship established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. We pay homage to these two and our Little Jumbo emphasizes the fine craft of preparing fresh local food with a focus on continental and contemporary and pairing it with fine wines and the best of classic and modern mixology. A particular emphasis is on creating exceptional customer experience, something very dear to Harry Johnson’s heart.

I read many reviews before deciding to book this restaurant during a recent trip to Victoria. Our server, Adi, was outstanding, attentive without being obtrusive. He made suggestions and was very accommodating when I did not enjoy a drink that was ordered. The noise level was loud but it was to be expected especially on a Friday night of a long weekend. I ordered the squash salad and thoroughly enjoyed it. For my entree, the pork belly did not disappoint. However, my colleague ordered the salmon and had to return it because it was cold. The staff was apologetic and quickly brought out another plate but this is one entree that should have been done right, considering we were in British Columbia! It was a small portion and my colleague remarked that he cooked a better salmon than what was presented. I would go back for drinks and appetizers but not sure about dinner.

I feel the music is too loud. Small room, loud music, voices go up and up and up. Also the value for money is slipping. I paid $12 for 5 oz of house wine. Won’t be back soon.

We had excellent service, and the drinks were very good. Food was good, and beautifully presented. We arrived at 7:30 and the ambience was nice -a slight buzz, but not loud. By 8:30, the noise level had become unbearable as the bar hoppers converged and were obviously more than tipsy already. We couldn’t wait to get out, because we had sore throats from yelling across the table at each other. We might have stayed for dessert, otherwise. Too bad a lovely evening ended on a sour note.

Unusual use of ingredients like pickled rhubarb and nettle sauce made the duck truly interesting and more importantly very tasty

Had heard good things about this place but had not previously ever visited but decided to try it while some Vancouver friends were visiting. All four of us were most impressed with the layout, ambience and most particularly the food and service. A winner in our view - can't wait for a return visit!

Great meal and awesome cocktails! The service was fantastic and we had a great time for our anniversary dinner. My wife is avoiding carbs and had no trouble selecting food to fit with her diet.

My husband and I are fast becoming regulars. Each change of the cocktail menu has me claiming a new favourite. The bartenders are also skilled at twists to classic drinks. Menu is delicious and flexible - you can treat the appetizers as tapas quite easily. Seating is comfortable and intimate whether you are at the bar or a table.

We were delighted with Little Jumbo! It was our 33rd Wedding Anniversary and we were seated at one of the cozy booths and offered a glass of champagne in celebration. It was so tasty we ordered more. The food was beautifully presented and deliciously prepared with some unique, seasonal twists...including a marinated squash & bocconcini salad, crispy shallots with grilled asparagus and rhubarb, duck with nettles. Desserts looked yummy, however still having some Sokol Blosser wine to finish the chef was gracious enough to prepare a delectable cheese plate which was not offered on the menu. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
Too bad we don't live in Victoria full time...though will definitely be back!!!

When we arrived, they were playing some horrendous rap "music". It was awful, and we nearly left. Service was good, although we had difficulty understanding our server. I had the burger, my husband had the seafood special: the skate. As the evening wore on, it became quite noisy due to the tin ceiling. We prefer a quieter atmosphere, and appropriate music.

Food was great. Horseradish with the oysters was bland (perhaps pre-grated)? Told the server and he went and got fresh horseradish and grated it for us - perfect!

The new food menu is amazing - lots of great choices for every palate. Humboldt squid, squash (zucchini) salad and asparagus are great appies; duck dishes, salmon, risotto, pork belly and a great version of steak! We tried all 3 desserts... say no more! Wonderful cocktails and wines as usual. 5 star recommendation.

We celebrated our 25th Anniversary at Little Jumbo's and the whole experience was exceptional food, ambiance etc. What truly made the evening special was the service we received from Raj our waiter and the generous offering of complementary pre-aperitif and after dinner digestif ...Well done Raj and Little Jumbo's

We booked online and mentioned it was our 30th wedding anniversary. When we arrived, my husband and I each received a lovely glass of champagne on the house! It was a lovely experience, our waiter was fantastic, he made excellent wine selections for our meals and was truly attentive and cared about our experience. Thank you so much for providing an exceptional dining experience on our special anniversary !

Much too squishy and loud for a second date.
I excpected more from the food, mostly because I heard it was fabulous...well I would not say that a tiny burger on a wet bottomed bun was in anyway appealing! Applies were nice but not anything to sing about. Also I will never ever pay 16 bucks for a whiskey sour again!
Staff fairly attentive though.
Cute atmosphere too.

Normally a great place. This time not so much. Sitting at the bar the service was terrible. We had to ask for drinks each time. Smug, slightly rude service. Puzzling. Sat in front of dirty plates for the majority of time we were there while the 2 bartenders chatted with friends(?) at the bar. First time in a long time I gave a $0 tip.

Disappointed that I was told that I could only stay for 2 hours. Any other time i have been there This was never the case. Shouldn’t even be an issue if I’m spending money on drinks and dessert. Not likely to come back if this practice continues.

Food and cocktails are excellent but SADLY no happy hour, and very expensive...$3 for oysters when one can get the same quality down the street for a third of the price at happy hours....worst aspect however was the music overhead. So loud (and fairly annoying, insipid tunes as well) one cannot hear the person across the table.

Bland-tasting dinners, both sage chicken and cod. Over-priced. Extremely small portion of veggies with both meals.
Interior of restaurant boring; no windows, no view, no art on the plain brick walls other than black and white chalk drawings. Tables and seating very cramped and crowded. It was necessary to move the chair of the table beside us in order to get out of my seat.
Slow and indifferent service from the female server (Andrea). Empty water glasses, no offer to refill.
The on-line reservation stated special occasion "birthday" however there was no acknowledgement whatsoever of this special day from neither the hostess nor the server.
We are residents of Victoria, however we definitely have no desire to return for a second visit, and can not recommend this restaurant to others. We hope the manager of Little Jumbo will see this review and respond to us if possible.

Little jumbo is consistently great in a lot of categories. The staff clearly appreciate their management and the customers and want to be there. The food is consistently high quality and prepared with attention to detail and skilled technique. It’s a great place to get drunk on an endless selection of hand crafted cocktails. Bringing a date here is a smart move.

This was my second time at Little Jumbo. The current cocktail list was spectacular! Last time, I wasn't as impressed with the printed list so ordered classic cocktails or had the bartender surprise me (he was fab). This time, I wanted so many of the listed drinks but had to settle for 2 -- and man, they were incredible!! The food unfortunately wasn't as amazing. We ordered the brussels and the spiced nuts. The brussels were deep fried and therefore tasty as heck, but the nuts tasted burnt. That said, I'll still go back whenever I'm in Victoria.
