Les Marchands Ratings and Reviews
Have been eating at the Lark since it opened so we wanted to try Les Marchands for a 5:30 dinner. Initial greeting was disappointing, host wanted to seat us at a high top table which my wife doesn't like; now there's only 4 people seated so we ask for a low table and were told "sorry they're all booked". Now mind you when we left there were only 8 people in the restaurant with no one at their low 4 tops!!! So it's like FU smarty manager, we don't need to return, especially when I'm paying a $200 tab!
Food: tried their touted fried chicken: if you want to know chicken get down to Georgia-The Carolinas-Bama. This was a pretty unseasoned bland chicken smothered in a gravy, nicely cooked bone out. Would order the gravy on the side and load up with the Crystal. 3 Cheese plate was fair: no fresh apple/pear slices just 2 kinds of bread, jam was good, cheese was good..
Bar: ok selection of wine by the glass, cocktails good.
Design: we liked the build out
Service: excellent server tried to make up for manager/greeter misstep.
Probably wouldn't go back until front of the house get's straightened out.
Love this place whenever I need a good night out...special go-to place with friends and they always want to go back too. Consistently high marks in food, vibe and wonderful attentive wait staff. You just don't have to worry about the evening. It will be perfect.
Very pretty patio, and the interior is nice as well - it's basically a wine shop that becomes a restaurant. The focus is the wine - an excellent list, great by-the-glass selection, and the wines are well cared-for and served in good glasses at the proper temperature. All things that should be common but sadly, aren't.
Food is inconsistent - some items are very good (at least on the brunch menu), some fall flat. No faulting the ingredients, so perhaps a lack of chefly attention? Yet overall a welcoming and enjoyable place that just needs to tighten up a bit.
This was a place that I'd been trying to go and taste food for a while. It is owned by the same people that own the Lark and was featured in Sunset Magazine a couple of years back. It's a cozy French bistro style vibe with several patio tables. The wine selection is varied and broad, and the cocktail list was solid. A friend and I were in the mood for Sunday brunch. Voila! While I thought ahead to make the reservation, I failed to specify "patio". So we sat indoors, and that was not as nice as the patio for daytime (but I'll admit indoors seems better for dinner). We tried the fried chicken and sourdough waffles, which were excellent, especially if you enjoy hot sauce. Theirs was a secret house made recipe. Super good. The frittata was nothing special, but the preparation was covered in a very fine and fragrant arugula, the best part of the dish. A shortcoming is the paucity of sweets offered for brunch. All in all, nice service, good cocktails and very good food. Parking was also sparse, so arrive early as this area is popular.
We've been to Les Marchands three times this week, bringing different people each time. They have loved it as have we.
Keep having semi-soft cheeses and that delicious grilled olive bread. And I love your salads too.
Lively bar scene, good wines, delicious small menu. Love it!
Our waitress was amazing! She is Brazilian (Bruna!) and we happen to be going to Brazil in January so we were able to pick her brain for tips and recommendations. Simply put: the food, the service, the atmosphere, and the cocktails were all fantastic! Great restaurant choice for lazy Sunday brunch. My husband's fave drink is a caipirinha and they make a damn good one.
I would have given 5 stars...however. They were out of 2 of their 4 entrees and we we’re told 10 minutes after we arrived that the kitchen would be closing so we needed to get our order in ASAP. If they are going to allow an 8:45 reservation they need to be prepared and they need to give at least 30 mins for ordering. Especially considering we ordered a charcuterie plate as an appetizer.
That being said, we all ordered the fried chicken and it was amazing. Literally the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Also the cocktails and recommended wines were exceptional. So I’ll be back and hopefully I can try one of their pasta dishes on my next visit.
Food was delicious. The avocado toast was worth the $12 price tag. The pasta was rich and decadent, and the wine list was great. Sat outside and the heat lamps made it warm and lovely. They also provide blankets in case you get cold. I will definitely go back!
We reserved outside seating and when we arrived the weather was windy and pretty cold. An inside table was not available so we agreed to sit near a heater. Pretty soon our server offered us blankets to wrap up. Everything worked out fine. We stayed warm and the food and wine were great.
I made this brunch reservation a bit hesitant because I hadn't heard of Les Marchands before and because a friend told me it was just a tasting room ( he had not been there, so that was an incorrect tip). I decided to take the chance based on previous reviews on Open Table and invited some local and a visiting friend from LA and boy were we pleased with the experience!
The two dishes we went for were both scrumptious... the description looked so good that we double-ordered two dishes: the Smashed Avocado on local sourdough (OMG) and the Shakshuka, which consisted of baked eggs, charred peppers, tomatoes, feta cheese... Yum all around. I drank the Clear Conscience drink with vodka and muddled cucumbers, citrus fruits and ginger - very refreshing. Bruna was our server and was absolutely delightful and knowledgeable of the menu. I would just strongly recommend that you use Open Table and make a reservation ahead. My party arrived a few mins early and were placed inside at a high-top and we would've had to stay there if I had not made the res prior because their outdoor seating is pretty limited. Will be back for sure for their dinner/wine selection which looks great! Thank you Les Marchands for making me look good to my friends, they thanked me innumerous times ;)
We always have a great time at Les Merchands! The brunch menu is amazing, tasty and always delicious. The brioche they use is super fresh, crispy and airy: perfectly prepared every time in every brunch dish. The crispy fried chicken is simply out of this world....you gotta try it, seriously. Crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. Not sure how they do it but it's a winner every time we go there. We order it solo just as an appetizer it's just so yummy!! The libations are lively as the staff. Anja always recognizes and acknowledges us when we come in as does her team. The team is super friendly, accommodating and genuinely happy to take care of us. We love it there and would recommend this place for brunch, lunch and dinner. It's a gem in the funk zone for sure.
The perfect brunch is a balance of sweet and salty, and Les Merchands does just that... we ordered two mocktails, the fried chicken, biscuits and gravy and sourdough waffles w whisky peaches; every bite was simply divine. The best part of Les Merchands is the genuine hospitality and service. Every server stopped by to politely check on us during our meal. It was obvious to us that the restaurant promotes a team environment that works closely w management, which makes for a sublime dining experience. As we floated away, we made reservations for the next time we are in town. See you in November!
I love the restaurant but was so disappointed having booked a table with a confined reservation a few days before, when we showed up for the table we were told that someone had taken our reservation and we would have to wait for another table. We waited for 45 minutes then got seated inside when we had booked outside dining. Nobody was bothered or offered to help, then the waiter came over to our table several times during dining asking if he could clear the table, when it was clear that we were still eating the food. This was the same waiter we had he week before who did the same!
A Shane as the place and the food is good and the cocktails and wine very nice but the experience was spoiled
Despite requesting an outdoor table when we made our reservation, there were no tables available when we arrived. Isn't that the point of reservations, to reserve a table, not give it away to anyone who drops by? The only tables available inside were very tall bar tables that we did not want. After talking to the manager she went into action, somehow encouraging an outdoor table to pay their check and leave. So after a fifteen minute wait (not bad) we were seated. The drinks were perfectly made. The food was excellent. It turned out to be a great evening.
We came after picking up our kids from camp at the Moxi, around 4:30pm. It was a strange time, and we were told that dinner doesn't start until 5:00pm. So we ordered French fries and charcuterie -- both were very good. We're from out of town so we wanted to taste the local wines. The Marchands offered a sampler -- none of them were any good to me, so we just ordered a glass from St. Emilion (which was good). Five o'clock came and the dinner menu was almost exactly the same as the one we got at 4:30. We just skipped dinner and ordered dessert instead. Overall, I thought the place was overrated by Yelp reviewers and would not return because of the limited selection for food and wine.
I am a SB native and own a home here. My girlfriend and I were visiting our wine clubs on 7/29 and looking to get some food. We had not been to Les Marchands, so we booked a table. We sat down and proceeded to wait for over 20 minutes to have someone… ..anyone, come by . We did not even get offered a glass of water or drink order. It was NOT busy. There are far too many other great places in SB to deal with BS service like this, so we made our compliant and left. I noticed about 2 additional parties leave because of the total absence of service. I will be sure to tell everyone I meet and know, to stay away from this place, there’s better places in town & in walking distance. I would recommend to the manager/owner to find out staff working 7/29 at 4:00 – 5:00. Ridiculous.
