    My wife and I have eaten in restaurants all over the world. My wife and I cook gourmet meals at home (we are both 79yrs old) but like to celebrate special occasions (our 53rd wedding anniversary) at unique culinary restaurants. We were delighted to eat at the culinary school in Hessel Michigan, our home state. We both ate halibut on a bed of barley risotto after starters of halibut potato salad (delicious) and a plate of zucchini vegetables (also definitely delicious). Food was prepared with great care and ingenuity and served with a smile.

    Once again an excellent meal. First courses (citrus salads and beet salad) were perfectly prepared as were the main courses (seared halibut and waygu steak). Only minor criticism was the restaurant was out of one of the main courses and my first wine choice. The server (Lindsay) was a delight- very attentive but willing to talk about herself when questioned. A real gem!

    Whitefish sandwich was out of this world! A little noisy, and pricey for what was received, however, overall experience was great and food was delicious. Cocktails were mediocre, Manhattan had little flavor. Server Kylie was outstanding.

    Considering the fact that this is a culinary school, I give a bit of latitude to the food service and general experience. That being said, there are changes that need to be made. Pricing should be reassessed, as the value is not there. The prices would indicate a dining experience that is free from rough edges, with sharp, attentive service, a full and innovative menu, and portions suitable for a north-country dinner restaurant. Entrees are ala carte to a large extent, and though the food was well prepared, it was delivered luke warm and one diner was made to wait for their entree. Bread was requested at a cost of $7 for a plate of one type of sliced artisan bread & butter. Cocktails too were priced on the high end, and the cedar smoked Old Fashioned specifically touted Luxardo ingredients, yet was served with no smoke cover (or hint of smoke) and two shriveled, sour, Craison-like garnishes. Now the big problems: issues that serve to alienate customers and prevent return visits: Two vodka “sonics” were ordered (vodka with equal parts soda & tonic) and were billed at $10 each, PLUS $1 each for tonic, PLUS $1 each for soda!! Incredible! Also the $7 bread plate had an additional charge of $1 for an additional piece of bread - mind you no extra bread was ordered for our party of 5! These ridiculous charges were affixed to a dinner tab of $384 BEFORE gratuity! Again, I want to be supportive of this dining spot and the value the school brings to their students, but I regularly hear more negative comments about the high prices and small portions than I do any positive reviews. Lastly, I believe they need to rework their relationship with Open Table, as it was extremely difficult to find open reservations, even though regular diners indicate that there are always open tables available. Those of us who utilize services like Open Table to find & make reservations will just not come if we can’t be accommodated when we check for the restaurant’s available tables & times.

    Excellent food and waitstaff. Lovely porch view. A table of 8 sat down after us and behaved like they were at home, alone on their own patio..extremely, rudely LOUD. Good Grief people! Be considerate of those around you. They were so noisy we could not hear each other to chat. We picked up our food and moved inside. The poor staff doesnt have much control over this. Just an arrogantly rude table that pretty much destroyed our evening. Otherwise I'd highly recommend the Culinary School.

    Lovely setting, pleasant, efficient staff. Food a bit uneven. Lettuce cups tasty but messy. Thai dish very flavorful but presentation weak. Orange ice cream with espresso, divine. All and all, very important to support the school and their restaurant.

    Unfortunately when I ordered my steak I forgot to ask for it medium and it was served rare They said they couldn’t cook it more so they boxed it up for me to take home to cook myself However we had a two hour drive ahead of and felt we shouldn’t try to transport a rare steak to be cooked more later so $44 and one bite later the steak stayed at the restaurant and I left hungry and disappointed

    We were in town for our anniversary, and had a lovely dinner at the Culinary Institute. I had the Thai red curry dish and my husband had the steak. Both were excellent. We started with the cornbread, which was superb! Only the zucchini appetizer fell a little flat. The chunks of zucchini stayed a bit watery. I would have shaved them into ribbons or thinner slices for grilling, to get rid of some of the water, or even scooped out the seeds before roasting. The manager poured us a little taste of Prosecco to celebrate our anniversary, which was such a special touch. Service was gracious and timely. We sat outside at a high top table and loved the outdoor heater on a cool summer evening. Seating was comfortable and no issues with noise. Our drinks (martini and old fashioned) were also really good. I wonder if the bar might become a bit more adventurously stocked in future, to allow for a broader range of drinks (think Jungle Bird, Corpse Reviver, Vesper). Overall a wonderful experience, highly recommend, and we would go again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a memorable anniversary dinner!

    Food was above average for the area. Inside seating seemed a bit loud; glad it was a beautiful evening on the porch. Had a wonderful experience going until server missed taking an order for a second drink. Entrees were served by runner, no server checking in with us. Entrees were completed, still no check in or drink order from server. Ultimately not a huge deal but it definitely took the shine off of our first LCCS experience.

    I had a wonderful birthday at the culinary school on Friday, August 5th with my husband and friends. My salad was crisp, delicious and the dressing was loaded with unique umami flavor! Three of us ordered the Waygu steak. The sauce was amazing, and the beef was buttery and so melt in your mouth tender. Probably the best steak dish I’ve ever had! Last but not least was the chocolate cake. Every heavenly chocolatey bite was just as perfect as the next. Our friend ordered the Affogato and that was equally enjoyed. We sat on the covered deck and as the evening cooled down and the water looked like sparkly diamonds from the moon, the ceiling heaters came on to keep us comfortable as we finished our wine. It was a perfect evening. We’ll be back and we’ll tell everyone how much we enjoyed it too! Thank you!

    We loved our dining experience at Les Cheneaux Culinary School. It was real cooking number one, the cornbread was the best I’ve had and the fried cabbage was so different and very good. I could have eaten a main course of just it. Three of the four of our table had the bison burger. It was cooked to perfection and the sauce it had was excellent. My husband had the curry. He loved it but it was extremely spicy, so beware. The servers are so attentive and their conversation was truly enjoyable. I highly recommend this dining experience to everyone!

    Great food with outstanding ambiance. My wife and I had the halibut and potato salad and the cabbage salad as small plates. Both were outstanding and had a wonderful balance of flavors. For the main course we enjoyed the Denver steak and the chicken. Both meats were perfectly prepared and among the best we have experienced. Minor downsides were the sauce (too liquid) on the Denver steak and the linguine with the chicken (spices did not balance the flavors of the chicken). Loved our dessert (panna cotta), not too sweet and well balanced. Wine selection was a great value for what we got. Kudos to the wait staff, students and master chef educator. We will return.

    Our family had a great time at the Les Cheneaux Culinary School last night. We tried everything on the menu except for the bison burger. Both the food and service were wonderful!

    We sat out on the covered patio and were treated to a beautiful lake view and a double rainbow after a passing shower. The food was very good and the service was consistent. Overall a pleasant experience.

    World-class dining with the heart and soul of the islands in every menu item. The local vibe is happy, the food is yummy and the staff are wonderful. We’ll be back and we’ll bring anyone we know who may not have already discovered this Huron jewel.

    Limited menu choices but well plated and good meld of flavors. Beet salad was primarily beets not a bowl of lettuce with three or four pieces of beet. Waygu beef, well most restaurants now have it! The reduction it is served in is the difference. Desserts are tasty and well plated. Service was excellent

    We've been to the Culinary School every summer since it opened. Overall, THIS visit was our least favorite. Our server server never filled our water glasses, nor poured our wine. She seemed unknowledgeable with the questions we asked and offered to find out for us. We purchased 2 bottles of Caymus (happed to be the most expensive bottle offered, but we love it) For food (Wagyu Steak, the most expensive menu item) was cold upon being served. That dish was ordered by 3 of the 7 people at our table. The sauce reduction was not reduced enough, the dish overall was not worth the price paid. The Chicken Parmesan dish was also cold upon arrival, 2 members of our group ordered that. The Fish Soup was ordered by 2 of our group. The salads were OK. Overall, the menu options were less imaginative and interesting than prior years. The bar staff and drinks were excellent and service by Chris and Cara was fantastic. Some years we visit twice in the week we are here, not this year. No repeat with menu options and food plated for us. Our visit was not that we won't try again hoping for a better outcome next year but we'll not return again this year. Hoping that things improve for summer of 2023. Whatever changes are made to the managers/teachers at the school aren't working well for us.

    The menu has variety , enjoyed our salads . The entrees were tasty but nothing unusual. Service was fine, a bit slow ( we’re getting used to it?). Did not try desserts.

    What a delightful surprise to find such a high quality restaurant in a small town in Northern Michigan. The food was of a quality that would easily compete in major foodie cities. The staff was well trained and the atmosphere was lovely.
