Heralded as an escapist's paradise, Le Colonial is a celebration of the seductive spirit and vivid flavors of Vietnam. The restaurant opened on iconic Oak Street in March 2019, after moving from its location of over 20 years on Rush Street. We decided to enjoy more flavors by ordering several appetizers and only one main. All were lovely. the monkfish appetizer was the stand out. also ilenjoyes the main whixh was a scallop and vegetable dish. Scallops were cooked to perfection. Wait staff knowledgeable, kind, and an addition to the atmosphere.

We ordered our 4 appetizers and our main meals. After the delicious appetizers we were waiting for our meals. The waitress asked if we would like to order desert, we ordered one ice cream waited for our main meal for 25 minutes. My daughter had to leave for an appointment. The food never delivered The waitress brought the bill I told her we never received our main meal. She blamed it on the kitchen handed me the bill and I paid it. She said she will be right back waited 15 minutes she never came back. Great food horrible service left hungry!!!

Food service was great and everything tasted amazing. Hostess staff was just ok, we were 5 mins late for our reservation and warned us that we’d have to leave by a certain time. However our waitress said it was a slow night and to take our time. We didn’t appreciate that at all.

I made a reservation several weeks in advance for my boyfriend’s birthday. When we arrived a few minutes early we were escorted to a small table sandwiched between 2 couples. It was 5:30 pm and not busy. We waited a few min for a better table which we did get after a green to be out within 1 hour and 40 min. We agreed although it seemed strange. Anyway we were offered water right away and then nothing. No one came to our table. After waiting patiently for 15 min I flagged down a waiter and he said he would find our waiter. He never returned no did anyone else. My boyfriend then got the attention of another staff member who without any apology said he would wait on us in the meantime. Ok we hurriedly ordered our drinks and dinner as we were convinced that no one would be back. The food was average but the cocktails were very good. Great atmosphere. Service not so good. No one seemed to care whether we were there or not. We left feeling very disappointed.

Upon arrival for our reservation, we were wisked to a very tiny round corner table where we would do had to sit side by side, knees touching. When asked to be seated somewhere else, the hostess rolled her eyes, sighed and ushered us to this awkward in the way table for two. Our waitress was lovely, but it ended there. The food was sub standard. We had read reviews and was so looking forward to the so called "amazing" restaurant, however, was very disappointed. Food was bland and boring, menu was the same. I would never go back.

Lovely space on the veranda with the windows open and perfect lighting. Waiter had trouble hearing our orders and returned several times to reconfirm our orders. He was kinda young/inexperienced and it was rather loud until a group left. Food came out delicious with the clever sophistication the Viet/French cuisine is known for. Great lunch spot for us.

I made a reservation for 4, and was able to expand it to 6 by calling the restaurant. They were very gracious about it. We were greeted promptly upon arrival, and our table was ready. Servers were able to answer all of our questions about the menu, as well as about the cocktails. The Lychee Martini was fantastic! The food was superb! Wonderful place!

I was surprised that people were admitted in T-shirts yet I received a call to confirm my reservation and was reminded that I need to follow the dress code. Otherwise I really enjoy this restaurant immensely every time. The red snapper is FANTASTIC!

We don’t like to make bad reviews because we understand the difficulty in running a high end business day in day out but certain things needs to be addressed. 1st, don’t advertise and make a big deal about a dress code if it is not going to be enforced - we got dressed up expecting a special night out and noticed lots of t-shirts, shorts, bowling shirts and other leisure attire which were absolutely not “business casual” as “required.” No big deal, except we had been denied access in the recent past for “inappropriate footwear.” 2nd, I understand maximizing floor space but our table for 3 was weirdly placed with half the table actually in a doorway with my wife sitting on the end of a banquet and my son on a chair almost in a plant. 3rd, as we were ordering our food my wife asked if she could see a champagne menu, our server said absolutely and then disappeared for 19 minutes. She actually brought the champagne menu after the appetizers had been delivered. Keep in mind we had not yet placed our main course selections. 4th, the appetizers were fine but nothing special - the chicken and cabbage salad and special avocado spring rolls were particularly dry. 5th, my wife’s green curry shrimp was very good. Son’s crispy steak was a salad that was overwhelmed with soy sauce while I could find no actual seafood in my seafood dumpling soup, which reminded me more of a middling matzo ball soup. 6th, and this is comparing apples to apples. I placed the exact same special occasion request on this reservation as we had the previous night at another restaurant. There was zero acknowledgment or reference to the occasion from anyone at Le Colonial. The previous night, at S & W, everyone from the host to the maitre ‘d to the server, everyone went out of their way to acknowledge our special occasion and make comments about it. I only bring this up because if you provide a space for customers to make special requests on their reservations then you should actually read the notes.

Le Colonial is consistently outstanding - food, service, and ambience. I live in Los Angeles and come here once or twice at least every 6 weeks because it’s just so lovely. My favorites are the shrimp and pork crispy spring rolls and the seafood dumpling soup to start. I love the vegan/tofu noodles as an entree

Returned to Chicago and le Colonial after more than a decade and the city and restaurant re-confirmed my expectations that both are exceptional. A fine - and accessible - dining experience in a warm and vibrant atmosphere. Our server was amazing. The food was delicious. After our dinner, we didn't want to leave so we embarked from our table to the bar where the bartenders were equally amazing as our server was. Will make it a point to return every time I'm in Chicago.
