About this restaurant

  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
With its understated forest-green shop front on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich, Le Chardon might look like just another Parisian-pastiche bistro – but step inside and you'll realise that this historic Victorian restaurant is the real deal. Originally the site of a David Greig grocery store, the restaurant retains all of the site's original wall tiles and is decorated with Parisian street signs, blackboard menus and kooky objets d'art. Romantic and cosy, this restaurant is renowned for its authentic bistro fare and has become the favourite haunt of canoodling couples and Francophilic foodies. Don't miss the Toulouse sausages with mash and onion gravy, and the profiteroles with ice cream and warm chocolate sauce.

We visit our children who now live in East Dulwich. This was a celebration of my wife's late mum birthday from the south of France. The place is really nice. The snails were great but the rib eye was a poor cut and the tartatan was warmed up from probably yesterday! My wife notices these things. I always wanted this gem to be a 'must always visit' but I think we will seek somewhere different from now on. But a big thank you for some lovely meals.

We came here for our anniversary. We had lived round the corner for ages, but (wrongly) always felt put off by mixed reviews. Our experience was fantastic. Excellent experienced French service, delicious timeless French cuisine, and a warm classic atmosphere. It's nice to see that these kinds of places still exist in London. We're just gutted that they'll be closing soon, as we would have definitely been regulars.

Le Chardon was recommended to me by an acquaintance at a French evening. I came with a friend of mine and we had a lovely evening. I would definitely come back again.

Disappointing. Had heard good reviews. Fish soup tasted horrible. Main course was cold and had to be reheated and dessert was average. For French restaurant, bread was very ordinary. Expensive and not good food at all. A place that has become complacent or an off night?

The food was good but they took quite a while to take our order and it wasn't very busy

I have visited Le Chardon quite a few times recently and it did not disappoint on this occasion. Good food and buzzy atmosphere. Friday evening so it was full. If you want a table for 2 I'd recommend asking for a table by the side walls which afford a bit more privacy.
