The Late August name derives from the joyful time of year when the Sears catalog would arrive at your doorstep, bringing a deep desire and wonderment to all who would receive it and begin feverishly circling the items that would hopefully arrive for Christmas.

Our restaurant, set in the previous Historic Downtown Sears building, seeks to bring that same wonder to guests through its atmosphere, service, and cuisine. Echoing the mission of Lucille's Hospitality, which is committed to “Serving the Past, Feeding the Future,” Late August’s menu explores the culinary heritages of Chef Chris Williams and Chef Sergio Hidalgo by bringing the dishes and flavors from both their youths and the experiences to date creating a culturally culinary celebration.

Why has nobody else thought of this African-Mexican cuisine mashup? Brilliant! The food was both novel and comforting, loved every bite. Excellent and reasonably priced wine list. Will definitely be back.

I had an amazing birthday lunch with my family! The menu has amazing options. It’s refreshing to have a variety of fusion and flavors. It’s nothing like it in Houston! If you have questions the waiters have no problem go into detail about the flavor profiles of each dish. Toasted Coconut Mojito: 10/10 This drink was so light, creamy and sweet. The hints of mint are delightful. I love that’s it’s not alcohol forward. Such an easy sip. Appetizers: Citrus Pork Confit: 8/10 This dish was flavorful! It reminds me of a sope. There’s a masa cake, a bean style puree and meat on top. Field Pea Hummus: 10/10 This a perfect dip dish. If you enjoy hummus, it’s a no brainer. It a creamy hummus on the bottom with a spice flavor, topped with a well seasoned chorizo and a surprise crunchy topping. It’s paired with a light buttery fry dipping bread. Entrees: Cabrito Stew: 9/10 Amazing spiced stew with goat meat and chunky veggies. The meat was tender and falling apart. The rice was cooked with fresh herbs which elevated the entire dish. If you’re into soup it’s worth the try! Smash Burger: 9/10 This burger is well composed. Every element plays so well together. From the salty cheese, to the spiced aioli, and the sweet pickled onions and the brioche soft bun. Definitely the burger of the year in my opinion. Dessert Navajo Donuts: 8/10 Reminds me of a beignet. The served with a spicy chocolate sauce and fresh fruit.

It was only mid-june but late August was wonderful. I moved to Houston from New Orleans and I have to say I found their red beans and rice a treat. I tried my own little tasting menu and had the field peas with Navajo bread, the tomato salad that was made perfect with the light watermelon addition, and the best tacos of my life made with the half rack of ribs. Of ribs. My husband had the steak and felt that it was great. .

Upon entering, I was welcomed with an ambiance of calmness and congeniality. The waitress (unfortunately I’m not good with remembering names, but it started with an L), was very friendly and informed about the menu as well as the history behind the fusion cuisine. My experience was Ill most definitely have Late August on my list of fav restaurants.

The service was outstanding and the ambiance and design is excellent. The food was good and I’ll be back to try another dish. The prices are a bit high for what you get, but not too out of line with other restaurants in the area.

We were excited to try this place for a child free night out but were very disappointed. We sat down at 715 and it took almost 30 minutes to get some sparkling water (I’m pregnant). We were told the “bar was backed up.” We ordered a mocktail and a martini - those also took over 30 minutes and the martini wasn’t correctly prepared. When we mentioned how slow things were moving, the response was that they were backed up and “everyone is also waiting that long.” (Not a great response when you are paying their prices and we werent offered anything in the meantime). We ordered apps and those took close to an hour (they were very good). Waiter then took our menus before we could even order our mains - we left after appetizers and spent $100. We had to get home for a babysitter and knew we would have been there for hours if we had tried to order mains. We went to a neighborhood restaurant and got high quality food within 15 minutes. Was excited to try this place (and the space is beautiful) but execution is poor, they seem to have a staffing issue, and their attitude was way off for their poor service.

Delicious food, but still needs a little work on service. Ordered martini but they served a “gin & tonic”. I said OK to save them trouble but then it turned out to be a gin and soda. Also not always easy to get server’s attention.
