Waiter was attentive. Seated in side room which lacked ambience but was quieter than main room. It was not a “ special” dining experience.
This is our favorite restaurant in Santa Rosa! Our go to place for any special occasion...Birthday, Anniversary, etc. Food is consistently outstanding and the service is always superb!!
I’ve been coming here since I was 12 with my parents. Now I bring my husband and children. We all LOVE it so much!
We had a wonderful first time!
We will definitely come back.
Hadn’t been in years. Even better than I remembered. I had veal in mustard sauce, boyfriend had the salmon. Everything was delicious and fresh. Waitstaff was perfect. Our waiter was helpful, yet not intrusive, it appeared he really wanted us to enjoy our experience. And we did!!!
We went to La Gare for our Anniversary. We used to live here and wanted to go to La Gare as it was a favorite. Overall nothing has changed here same decor for 40 years. It is time for a remodel. Really old and funky inside. However, that is just a personal opinion. The service was so bad. We ordered two bottles of wine, not once did our waiter ever stop by and Pour our wine for us.
The crab cakes were full of fillers like bread crumbs. Very little crab. The Sole we fine. My husband ordered medium rare steak, which was over cooked and disappointing.
Salad and soup came with entree which is very nice. Same salad they were serving 40 years ago. Basic butter leaf with basic dressing. It was just fine. Mushroom soup was disappointing. Nothing special about any of the food and service was a D.
Overall food was a B-. The wine list was good and the prices are very fair not over inflated.
We won’t be returning to La Gare. It was a flashback in time. The outdoor sidewalk area was nice. But that is for private parties only.
For a French restaurant we didn’t find the food to be remarkable. We’ve eaten at California cuisine restaurants that were far better.
La Gare has been a Santa Rosa favorite for decades, offering delicious French cuisine that’s difficult to find in Sonoma County. The four of us sampled a little of everything: Escargot, frogs legs, prawns Provençal, beef Wellington, sweet breads, rack of lamb and braised duck a la Orange. All were fantastic except my entreé, the duck, was tough and the sauce didn’t have much of an orange flavor at all. But it was a very enjoyable evening and we’ll be back.
Old school French restaurant reminiscent of a bistro in the French countryside. Fresh, well prepared food along with a fairly priced wine list and knowledgeable servers made for an enjoyable evening.
Service was excellent
I decided on La Gare for my birthday dinner after looking at the menu and reading reviews. I was looking forward to it for several days after reserving a table. When I mentioned La Gare at a couple of wine tables, it sounded like a good place.
When we arrived, I got into Facebook to check in. The hostess made a snide comment about people being on their phones all the time. It was odd and I felt judged. I probably should have left then.
We were seated and I noted that the restaurant looked like it could have been a diner at one time with wooden booths along the wall. But I don’t judge food on the ambience.
We had a server who was very nice and friendly. Oddly, it felt almost unnatural, but I began to feel differently after we chatted some more.
I ordered rack of lamb for my dinner. All dinners come with soup and salad. Our soup was barley vegetable. The soup and salad were fine and the lamb was good. But it was not of the quality I anticipated from a French restaurant. We have a French bistro in Baltimore the does a great job with the “wow” factor. It’s in the preparation, the plating, the quality of the ingredients - above that which most have at home. I didn’t have that feeling at La Gare. The food was good. But I left disappointed because I expected better for the price.
We love La Gare and go every year for our joint anniversary with my parents! It was their 65th! Keith our waiter always makes us feel special and his french is tres magnifique!
Excellent food and service. We always come here for special occasions.
we have eaten at La Gare before. It is our go to place to take visitors from out of town. BUT this time everything was excellent EXCEPT the tomatoes. At this time of year there is no excuse for hard, flavorless tomatoes. we were disappointed in the salad as were our guests.
Warm romantic atmosphere. Carpeting dampens noise level. If you like traditional french food this is the place to go. Rich intense flavors. Soup and salad included in the meal. Parking lot 1/2 block away at Aroma roasters. Great presentation on desserts.
Picked this location as it sounded good on the web and was near where we were staying. The decor was a bit more German or Swiss than French, but no big deal. Excellent service and food in a pleasant ambiance.
Husband and I ate dinner there on a Friday night. We've not eaten there in several years. Our server, Keith, was outstanding. Just the right amount of attention and conversation. The food was good but nothing really stood out. We had the New York steak for 2. I know NY can be tough, but you hope that the kitchen is looking at the cuts carefully. It was tough, and we even had it rare. The Bearnaise sauce was OK but should taste of tarragon and I couldn't taste any. The creamed spinach was quite runny but it tasted good. The best dish was the salad. Very fresh and not too much dressing. We are both low carbers so we only picked out a couple of the fried potatoes to eat, they were done on the crispy side, a good thing. We had a bottle of wine with dinner. The bill was ~ $180 with tip, a bit pricey.
Service was disappointing. We felt forgotten by our waiter. When he was available, he was good. But he seemed to disappear for long periods of time. And it wasn’t that busy.
Food was great, fast service. Overall great 1st experience
A great family spot with good service and yummy food in a mom and pops type place
I have been going to La Gare for years, and have never been disappointed. The menu is well planned, the service very good, and the food excellent. (Onion Soup delicious.)
Nowhere else that I know of in the area can you get such a good meal including soup, salad, entree and dessert for such a reasonable price.
Everything was outstanding. Our server, David, was excellent. If I could have anything to suggest, it would be that the filet of sole was a little salty. La Gare is always a go to restaurant for us for special occasions!
Service was great, staff tried hard and were very pleasant but the food was bad. Not fresh, definitely from frozen and over cooked. Very disappointing.
Authentic French cuisine and ambiance at its finest! Each entree includes sides plus soup and salad, which is unusual these days.
Great traditional French cuisine!!
Average food for a French theme restaurant. My duck was over cooked. The soup and salad provided before dinner was excellent.
Extraordinary cuisine and service as always....for almost 40 years. Always special. Never boring. We love it.
Never disappointed. As usual, everything was excellent.
We have been dining at La Gare for over 30 years and have never been disappointed! Every bite from start to finish is heavenly. We have shared many memorable celebrations at La Gare and look forward to many more!
Two couples celebrating anniversaries. We had a delicious dinner of rack of lamb and filet bordelaise. Loved the cherries jubilee prepared tableside. Our server was very attentive.
Family owned Restaurant in business since the late 70's. Good food, always consistent, reliable.
LaGare has been our go-to anniversary spot for 36 years! We are never disappointed!
We had a wonderful meal at La Gare as usual.. The soup was a home made tomato soup and it wasn't acidic like so many tomato based dishes. It was so delicious and flavorful.. The salad that came with the meal was delicious also.. A delicate butter lettuce with a delightful house dressing that was not over powering. Everyone enjoy they're main course, but I especially enjoyed my New York Steak with peppercorn sauce.. My mouth is still watering, just thinking about it's perfectly done texture and it's wonderful flavor.. Also, I have to add that the vegetables that came with the meal included fresh green beans and carrots. The carrots had exceptional flavor with what ever they had done to them. We all commented on how they were so delightful to taste and cooked perfectly. Our waiter seemed overwhelmed and new to serving and was not as attentive to our table as the wait staff has been in the past. That is why I gave the service a 4 stare instead of 5.. But, all and all we had a wonderful evening and the food was exceptional as usual..
We had our 30th anniversary dinner here and it was wonderful! The waiter was very friendly, the service great and the food was excellent!
Was disappointed in the waiter. Did not seem as efficient as in the past, perhaps just a bad day.
Wonderful experience! They were so accommodating for our family and let our kids enjoy themselves too! The food was delicious and very generous portions! The seafood was quality and we had better steak than anywhere in the area.
The service is outstanding, the food was excellent. The owner and chef Roger come to our table to visit and ask how our meals were. The prices are very reasonable considering what you receive. I like that they include the salad and soup in the entre price.
Great Anniversary dinner with excellent service. We asked to have our orders for halibut and sweet breads split in the kitchen and it was wonderful!
