As the name implies Kokoro Sushi specializes in offering authentic Japanese sushi along with traditional dishes. The chef's special is the sushi platter that comes with an assortment of shashimi such as tuna and salmon each which comes with wasabi to enhance flavor. Each sushi platter also comes with cucumber rolls that are traditional in dishes such as these.
Kokoro Sushi also has several ramen dishes on the menu and which are known for their bold flavors and generous serving size. The interior of Kokoro Sushi is quite quaint and cozy but that does not take away from the dining experience. This restaurant has closed down.
I ordered the tonkotsu (pork-flavored) ramen and was happy with it, although the portion is quite deceiving as they used a extra large bowl but the actual noodles + condiments are only about 30% of the big bowl in which the ramen noodles were served.
Food is amazing and a great little restaurant if you enjoy sushi. Serving sizes are generous but not over-the-top. All ingredients are very fresh and well prepared. You definitely have to have good instructions to find this place, it is inside a small indoor stripmall.
We enjoyed a romantic Valentine's dinner. The food was fantastic, the waiter was helpful with ordering and made suggestions that we would not have considered, but ended up loving. The sushi is obviously very fresh and the ambiance was simple and comfortable. We will definitely return any time we are up for sushi.
Best sushi I have had in a very long time! You can tell the difference in the quality of the fish. Great service too!
I tried Kokoro at the recommendation of a friend and many happy Yelp reviewers. The menu was simple. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen, Spicy Toro roll (my favorite), and the Dragon Roll. The ramen: fresh noodles, crisp veggies, two large slices of pork, and hearty broth. My only complaint is that there weren't enough veggies! The toro was unbelievably delicious, but the rice wasn't anything special. There were "crunchies" on top...which I'm not a huge fan of in the first place, and some were stale! The dragon roll was cut, separated, and then pieces of fish were placed on top...I was hoping for the delicate artistry you typically see with the sashimi wrapped around the roll. It's a small place so don't expect privacy or quick service.
I read that service was slow but worth it. I did not find service slow at all. In fact, I felt our waitress was very attentive and our salads and then sushi meals were served in a timely manner. Food was great and reasonably priced. I would go back again!
We had read reviews that indicated our food might be slow to come out, but that once it came, it would be delicious. This was in fact our experience. Fortunately, the initial wait for food to start to appear was buffered by our service. He brought us some sparkling Sake on the house as well as some pieces of Salmon Belly that melted in our mouths like butter.
When the food did come, it did not disappoint. The Wasabi roll packs a punch and was delicious. Also, the pork ramen dish we had was the best ramen that we've had in Charlottesville. A bit of a wait.... yes. Worth it? Yes!
