About this restaurant

  • Good for groups
  • Good for special occasions
  • Lively
Recognized by the James Beard Foundation, Michelin Guide and named one of the best restaurants in the U.S. by Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, GQ and more! Japanese izakaya and Texas barbecue are arguably the two best cuisines to enjoy while imbibing. Kemuri Tatsu-ya offers a mash-up of the two, plus an excellent selection of booze—including a ‘whisky bible.’ Guests are welcomed into the space with an enthusiastic “irasshaimase!” from the staff. The experience only gets better from there with creative dishes like Taiyaki Cornbread, Brisket Tsukemen and Guaca-Poke. Bright, innovative cocktails, including super-chilled Toki highballs cranked out from a machine, are
an essential part of the experience. Reserve a table today to get a taste of this iconic Austin
restaurant, brought to you by Tatsu Aikawa and the team behind Ramen Tatsu-Ya.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tatsu Aikawa

From the OpenTable editors: When it opened in 2017, this MICHELIN Bib Gourmand quickly racked up accolades—including a spot on Bon Appétit’s best new restaurant list—for chefs Tatsu Aikawa and Takuya Matsumoto’s innovative Japanese izakaya-meets-Texas smokehouse mashup. That looks like smoked chicken wing yakitori, brisket hot pockets, and chili cheese takoyaki chased with beer and whisky in a cozy, wood-lined tavern.

Hands down one of the best meals we've had....nearly a religious experience. An Uber driver tipped us to this place as his favorite spot, Now we understand why. If we were local, this would be our go to. Delicious, unique food and an unmistakably cool atmosphere.

Food is overrated. Too small to really enjoy if you share. Can’t even remember what I ate because it was only a morsel of everything. Not my kind of culinary experience.

We had a great experience at KT! Food and service were great and interesting. I can tell that it was a game changer compared to my first experience in this restaurant which was outside, and without reservation! Therefore , my recommendation: book a table indoor!!

Service and food were top-notch. Unfortunately, we were seated in the area that was brutally warm and uncomfortable. When I booked a reservation, open table indicated there were no outside options available which led me to believe that we would be indoors. When there is a high of 95 in Texas and you’ve been hot all day, you just want to enjoy dinner indoors. The area of the restaurant we were seated in is not considered indoors and did not have air conditioning. I purposely chose a restaurant that didn’t have a patio so that we could be more comfortable for dinner. I’m not sure what’s worse. Being overly uncomfortable and hot all through dinner for which we spent a nice amount of money or the fact that the staff knew it was gonna be this way. It wasn’t an AC malfunction or an issue that popped up that day and they unfortunately have to work in that environment. They really should list this on open door as a patio or outdoor seating. It’s a long night when you have to go outside to cool off because there’s just no moving air in the building.
