Wait staff from the minute we arrived clearly didn’t want to be there and wanted to go home.
We went for the seafood platters and once we had sat down and prepared to order, were told we needed to order this 2 days in advance even though this was not mentioned on the website or the menu when we sat down. And if we wanted to order it for Thursday we could (this was on a Monday). As it is advertised as “Byrons best seafood platter” I’d think it would be mentioned that you have to order it 2 days in advance when booking.
We made a reservation for 1:45 and after being told there was no seafood platter we also advised the kitchen closed at 2pm - again not mentioned when booking or when we sat down.
Once we ordered, the entree didn’t come out until the end of the meal after we followed it up - the mains were also fairly average.
Overall a very underwhelming and quite expensive dinning experience.

We loved the experience of being able to see and taste the different bush foods and spices found in the menu before we ate. It was highly informative and delighted the senses. The food was delicious and knowing what we were tasting heightened our tastebuds!
The food can be amazing to very average depending on the dish and the day. The music can be a little too loud to enjoy the company of your fellow diners

From the moment we arrived to the second we left, it was the most welcoming enjoyable evening. The attention of the staff and their genuine desire to ensure we had a great time was just amazing. The food is thoughtful, different, so tasty and the time taken to explain it all, shows people who are passionate about food and service. So may great flavours, good wine options and great cocktails. It will become a must for us whenever we go to Byron Bay. Well done Mindy (I hope I spelt that correct) and all of the staff.

We spied Karkalla on a recent night out in Byron, and on our subsequent visit we weren't disappointed. Mindy was a wonderful host, and the floor staff and manager were equally attentive and helpful. We sampled across the menu, from the Brunswick River oysters with finger lime, to a fish curry with local seaweed , and a bush tomato gnocchi with local seafood. All were delicious, interesting and noteworthy. We finished with a shared tiramisu with Bookies gin and macadamias. Note : bring an appetite, as you are going to want to eat everything here. A fantastic addition to the Byron dining scene, with local indigenous ingredients used intelligently and delightfully.

We visited Byron for my 40th and had my birthday dinner at Karkalla on a recommendation from some friends who live locally. We were not disappointed!! Very unique menu, and every dish we ordered was delicate and delicious. Can’t wait to come back and try more of the menu. Highly recommend.

Food was really good, however we felt that they could have created some really unique dishes rather than playing a safe menu with a couple of "native" ingredients.

We can’t rate Karkalla highly enough. Innovative food that ticked all the boxes for us as foodies with a desire for delicious but healthy options, that also tailors to our food sensitivities.
The staff were happy and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere ..vibrant and trendy, yet relaxed and unpretentious. Limited tables make it feel intimate and special.
We loved the cured ocean trout and Karkalla market fish curry. Pleeeassse keep the school prawns special on the menu! Devine!

A beautiful restaurant that has a real focus on native ingredients, putting together dishes with Indigenous flavours in the most delicious way. The staff are all wonderful and friendly, and it’s evident how much passion the owner has for showcasing local produce and ensuring her customers have an enjoyable experience. The food here is beautifully prepared and considered. The ambience thoughtful and comfortable. We had the seafood platter which was incredible - particularly the balmain bugs and accompaniment sauces that introduced native ingredients to us.

We went for a birthday treat and found the food, the service and the ambience to be very enjoyable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food menue had limited but good choices and was filling. I would prefer the music to be turned down a little.

Brilliant and unique use of local indigenous ingredients to create a modern Australian menu. Thoughtful and delicate balance of flavours across all the courses we chose. There are many fantastic culinary experiences in Byron and we tried them all but Karkalla deserve to be supported for creating a menu that makes the local produce the star of the show. Looking forwards to our next visit !!
