Eastern European
Chef Bonnie Morales cooks the food of the former Soviet Union, including many dishes inspired by those she grew up eating in her Belarusian family. Meals at Kachka begin with a table filled with zakuski,
Russian drinking food paired with vodka. The warm and lively atmosphere at Kachka turns dinner into an event, fueled by a parade of dishes marked by deep and vibrant flavors such as dumplings, cured fish
and pickled vegetables. Kachka serves over 50 different vodka selections, as well a list of house made infusions, craft cocktails, and a curated list of beer and wine with a focus on Eastern European producers. The only Portland restaurant to be included in America’s Essential Restaurants of 2015, 2016 and 2017 by Eater, one of GQ’s Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2015 and Bon Appétit’s Best New Restaurant nominees in 2015, and was a semifinalist for 2015’s James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.

We had a wonderful experience at Kachka amid the coved–19 “ crisis”. First, we were happily surprised we could get in so quickly with limited reservation time. Secondly, our waitress Erin was wonderful. The restaurant was taking extra precautions by providing us with only one set of menus as to help keep the spread of any unwanted germs. Thirdly, their food is always amazing, I had the tasting menu (unfortunately I can’t remember the names of the dishes) and my husband and daughter ordered Cherry, cheese, butternut squash dumplings, lamb shashlik and we had one of our favorites, hearing under a for coat. Everything we tasted was beautiful. We absolutely love this place, but I prefer the original location because it reminds me of my husband’s grandmothers house.

I really appreciate all the extra safety measures Kachka took to ensure all their guests were protected. They discarded menus after each party, and gave us separate serving utensils with each dish so we weren't serving communal dishes with personal silverware. Additionally they gave recommendations for dishes that were easy to safely share. It allowed a group of us to get together in the middle of a crazy time.

Wonderful dining experience. From the vodka flight to the cherry tart dessert! Great ambiance. Simple "Russian kitchen " feeling complete with Russian music playing. Great service!

Dinging the service because it took awhile to get things going after being seated. After that, service was good. Food is always first-rate.

Fantastic meal as always. Go for the tasting menu and add some dumplings. You won't be disappointed. We finished with the cocao nib vodka in place of dessert - such a fun way to end the meal!

Thank you for the review, Diane! You can't beat cocoa nib vodka for dessert!

Had such a pleasant experience at Kachka. First time eating Russian food at a restaurant and was interested in seeing how it would be represented. The people at Kachka really know what they’re doing. Highly recommend.

Good was delicious. Our server worked hard, but I didn’t get my vodka shots until most of my meal was gone. Server was cheerful, attentive when we requested individual checks and a good time was had! Your pork shashliki with apples and special bread was fabulous!

Everything we ordered was delicious. However the dumplings, all four flavors, were the best. Would definitely return for more. We did enjoy the cherry dumplings mixed with the meat dumplings for contrast in flavors.

Would have liked to give it 5 stars, but I take issue with businesses that add a surcharge of 5% for "Health and Wellness". Owning my own business if would be like me adding a 5% surcharge for toiletries or anything else. There is overhead and costs to run a business. I normally tip 20% for good service which our server Erin certainly gave us, she was super in all areas, but as we told her, she was only going to receive 15% due to the 5% surcharge.

Kachka
Responded on March 11, 2020

Hi Tom! Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We prefer to be transparent with our guests when it comes to costs, which is why we keep the Health and Wellness surcharge separate. This surcharge helps but certainly does not cover the cost of providing healthcare to our staff, and many of our guests are happy to support the cause. It is unfortunate that you punished your server for receiving healthcare with a smaller tip, but that is your choice.

The cutest decor and the most incredible food. I've never been to Russia before but was truly transported through the cuisine here. The Ruskie Zakuski is an absolutely must order for solo diners or groups and a great way to try so much of the menu.

Weird that all my ratings are 4 stars but the overall experience is 5 stars. Somehow the total package comes together as greater than the sum of its parts. Worth checking out and deciding for yourself.
