I’ve been here before and the service in the past was impeccable. In this case, 6 of us arrived over 15 minutes. The first couple git drinks quickly; it took more than 10 minutes for a sever to show up for the next four. Awkward when entertaining; drinks were off sequence and the server didn’t get us back in sequence.
In fact, it was clear they weren’t attuned to us. They were busy elsewhere.
Drinks straggled in based on lung periods of time between server visits. When we finally order the $30/ head cold curated adventure, we also ordered hot food. Cold stuff came in relatively rapid and successful succession. Hots came out staggered after a long drinkless wait.
Some of the hot food was 20 minutes apart. We actually cancelled the last two.
The staff were wonderful, but the service was a huge swing and a miss! I’m not sure I’d risk it again.
I love this place. I might go there on my own but hosting a group... no so much. This is a unique experience, the food is unusual, if the service doesn’t flow, home run turns into something else.
The sour cherry dumplings are amazing, I’ve never eaten anything like them and will be back for more!
The food was amazing. We went with a large group of people and ate family style. Everything on the menu is spectacular.
I love Kachka. I go there once a month with girlfriends. This was the first time
I went there with my husband and I was a little disappointed. The noise level in the back room is really high. The food is amazing but we ordered the salmon skewer. I have never ordered this before so I can’t say if this time it was bad when it has been good in the past. But it was inedible. So fishy and wrong. I am a PNW native and I love me some
salmon. There is no excuse for fishy salmon in this part of the world.
The food was amazing! The Pelmeni were very authentic. It was hard to talk though as the music was loud (and trying to be authentic but failing).
What a wonderful experience for our first time having Russian cuisine. I couldn’t imagine a better place for the exposure. Like having dinner at your Russian grandmother’s house. Cozy with great food
We have come to the old location since it’s one week opening. Always fun and fresh.
Love the new site.
Note: we were told the tea pots stuck to the table plastics and to lift up carefully. Why not just provide a saucer underneath?
Most of the dishes were very good, stuffed cabbage Pelmeni, herring, but smoked fish only ok- inconsistent and scallops didn’t work at allI,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
Super fun and flavorful!!! We had a blast, our service was great, and we fell into that wonderful time warp where everything was right with the world. Thank you.
Thanks for joining us, Eric! We hope to see you again soon!
Beautiful experience. The servers seem very well trained and.are very helpful in suggesting menu items.
nb. Bigger tables or smaller service plates seem to be needed yet the great visual presentations are so well done.
Spacibo! We're so happy you could join us.
Terrific experience and food. Server was lovely. I bought the book!
Michael, we're so happy you enjoyed your experience! We hope the Kachka Cookbook yields terrific food experiences in your own kitchen as well. Hope to see you again soon!
Really delicious food and service that defies the hipsters aloofness that has become the norm. I'll be back soon.
What a fantastic compliment, Piper! Thank you so much for joining us.
A bit spendy but the food was great and we got to try lots of different vodkas.
Thanks for joining us! If you're looking for a great deal, we have a great Happy Hour daily from 4:00-6:00pm with food and drink options!
Fantastic array of food choices, had no idea Russian food was so good. I also love fish so the cold fish dishes really appeal to me, but there is plenty of choices for everyone's taste. The vodka selection is large and the flights are a good way to taste the different kinds. Service people delivering the food are really good at describing the dishes in detail. Great night for our anniversary!
Susan, we're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience. Thank you for celebrating your anniversary with us!
Excellent Russian cuisine! I highly recommend this restaurant!
A pleasant place to eat. It was our first time so we were not sure what to expect. Portion sizes could be bigger but the food was very good.
Thanks for trying new things with us, Wade!
I visited Kachka on a Saturday evening - 4:15 pm reservation - with my partner and 2 local Portlanders who have previously dined at Kachka. Our table service was great, plates were served quickly (but not too quickly), and our server answered all of our questions enthusiastically. Each dish was delivered with a detailed explanation, and presentation was attractive and mouth-watering. The total experience was fun, adventurous, and enjoyable! My Russian grandmother handed down her recipe for Golubtsi to my mother and then to me and my siblings, and the Kachka version was similar in taste and texture. We enjoyed our dining experience. Thank you!
Lydia, we are beyond touched with this review. And as for our gotlubtsi recipe being similar to your grandmother's? There's no greater compliment. Thank you for visiting Kachka, and we hope to see you again soon!
Our first time trying Kachka. It was a Thursday night, 6 pm reservation, my wife and I celebrating our son's 13th birthday. The food was outstanding. The service was only fair. We waited for 10 minutes before a server took our drinks order. Another 10 for the drinks and to get our food order in. We opted to have our food brought out as it was ready, our server read back our order to us, and then she went to work the front of the house and did not speak with us or check in for the rest of the meal. Despite reading back our order, one item brought out to us was not what we ordered and one item from our order never made it to our table. Also, a second drink for our table (a bottle of cola) had to be ordered twice before it made it to our table. Finally, there was a twenty minute gap between dishes while we waited for our complete meal. The different servers were pleasant, adjusted our bill for the incorrect order, and understood our frustration with what they agreed was not optimal service from staff or kitchen. We will definitely be back and are hoping this was an outlier on service. Again, the food was excellent and we did enjoy it.
First, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback--it only makes us better. Service is very important to us at Kachka, and we are sorry that this wasn't your experience. Thank you for celebrating your son's birthday with us!
Really fun place to go with family and friends on a special occasion! Very unique dining experience.
Thanks for joining us! We hope to see you again soon.
Kachka is my favorite restaurant in Portland. It is always outstanding- in food, service and ambiance. Everyone should try Russian cuisine, and this is the best place to do so, outside of a private Russian home. Love love love!
What an honor, Molly! Thank you for the support!
Kachka and it’s sister location Kachinka are some of my favorite restaurants in Portland. I loved the atmosphere there at Kachka on New Year’s Eve!! I have to especially thank Israel for stopping by my table and talking to my girlfriend and I during the night. This small gesture made me really felt like I was apart of their family and I know it means a lot to my girlfriend. It was awesome spending New Year’s Eve Russian style!
Thanks for joining us for New Years', Cody! You're always part of our family when you visit Kachka.
It's a great place for a group and for drinks...especially vodka tasting. Delicious infused vodkas too. The dumplings and the herring under a fur blanket are THE BEST!!!
YOU'RE the best, Kellie! Thank you for the support!
Excellent russian inspired food. Great service. the tables are very small.
Thanks for joining us, Teri!
Very small, pediatric portions but prices are more than for full portions. Once we realized we needed to order much more to make a reasonable meal out of it, the time required between orders killed the appetite. The sodas ordered (eg Pomegranate) came in glasses with 2/3rd ice and small amount of the actual soda. Food was good but but when all's said and done, bottom line question is would you return? The answer is no- due to the small portions (food and drinks) and unreasonably poor value.
Also, they charge 5% of bill for employee's healthcare (should be business owner's responsibility), in addition to tips.
Hi Ash! Our high-quality ingredients and housemade staples may result in a higher price tag, but to us, taking the time to make and source things thoughtfully is worth it. As for the Health and Wellness fee, we prefer to maintain transparency with our guests rather than absorb it into the menu prices. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
this food is fun, delicious and leaves one with something to think and talk about for days.
Thank you for this fantastic compliment, Robert! We appreciate the support and hope to see you again soon.
Best russian food I've ever had
It makes us so happy to hear that you enjoyed our family's recipes. Thank you for the review!
The food was delicious, memorable, and fun. Infused vodka was awesome! Staff was very friendly and happy to explain the menu and make recommendations.
Thank you for joining us! We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience!
Every dish was amazing. This was a large Christmas Eve dinner we had all been looking forward to for some time. Everyone was thrilled with all of the food and had a great time, until the end. We finished eating dinner and were handed dessert menus, and then we were 100% ignored for OVER THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES. Our server walked by our large table over and over and over and over, ignoring all of us as we tried to ask for service. All we wanted was one dish of sour cherry varenki to share, but she couldn't be bothered to check in. The long 35+ minute gap was incredibly awkward. Finally someone from our party got up and had to walk over and ask for service so we could get our bill and leave. When asked how long the cherry varenki would take, she said 5 minutes. 15+ minutes later it arrived. All told, we sat there waiting to leave after finishing the last pre-dessert plate for nearly an hour. It caused a lot of anxiety, was extremely frustrating, and was a bad ending to an otherwise great experience.
Cait, thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback: it only makes us better. We understand that consistent service from beginning to end is so important. We are grateful that you celebrated Christmas Eve with us and hope to see you again soon to dazzle you with the service all our guests deserve.
Celebrated Xmas Eve with friends; everything was wonderful. A festive location, and the food was to die for. We had a bit of almost everything and I would definitely return. Their bourbon cocktail the Churchkhela was wonderful.
We're so pleased you could celebrate the holiday with us! Thanks so much for both the review and your visit: we hope to see you again soon!
Fun place to go with a few people. Four to six is a good number so you can taste more dishes! The staff is excellent with helping you decide what to order. We were a group of eight who had never been there before, so a very fun experience. We look forward to returning! Unusual and delicious food.
Such great advice! Thanks for the review. We hope to see you again soon!
Great food and drinks. Service uneven. Fun night. Will be back.
Thanks for the review! We look forward to seeing you again.
Im not sure I love the new space. Sitting at the front windows with all that florescent light from outside was not quite the ambiance I was looking for. Also, not the restaurants fault, but we were sat next to a table with very distracting and loud conversation. Food is still great though.
Simka, we're sorry to hear that the ambiance wasn't exactly what you were looking for. In the future, feel free to ask your server or the host for another table--if available, we're happy to make a switch to better accommodate your experience. Thank you for the review! We hope to see you again soon.
Our reservation was at 5 so it was fairly empty and quiet.
I happen to know it gets very noisy.
Food was excellent, service ok, atmosphere ok.
Thanks for joining us, Linda! We hope to see you again soon.
They were out of almost everything warm on a cold winter day. The server was very flippant with us. I usually enjoy the restaurant but their lunch was a missed
We very much appreciate the feedback, as it helps us to be better.
Kachka remains one of our favorite places. Staff is helpful (we were reseated from the very cold table across from the entrance to a super-cozy table in the corner). Food is absolutely superb. Drinks excellent. We keep returning and keep leaving with big smiles on our faces and thoughts of the next meal at Kachka!
Thank you so much, Beau! Your support means a lot to us.
This was top notch gourmet eating experience inside a (refreshingly up-tempo) Russian novel, including friendly customers offering advice on the best seats, choice vodka's, and fascinating explanations of each dish by the wait and chef staff. Can't wait for chapter 2. Thank you!
Robin, this wonderful review made us smile. Thank you so much for visiting us! We hope to see you again soon for Chapter 2.
I have always loved Kachka. I remember walking in the first time, not knowing what 'Russian food' was and instantly smelled familiar smells from my Austrian grandma's cooking and thought "oh, its like home." Having a toddler and moving to the 'burbs has kept me away too long but I am so happy I was able to meet a friend for dinner and it delivered as always. The only thing I wish there was on the menu still is the Duck Duck Salad (something like that, lol). I am sure it will come around again. Our server Erin was top notch, so well versed, excellent at helping us decide on new items and friendly to boot. Can't wait for my next visit. And the market is So great!!
Thank you for this wonderful review, Jennifer! Our recipes are largely pulled from Bonnie's family, so it's the biggest compliment we can receive when someone says Kachka feels like home! We do have a Duck Olivier salad, and it will absolutely be back. Your support means a lot to us. We hope to see you again soon!
The food was unique, interesting, beautifully presented, and tasty. The server helped us choose plates to share so we had a maximum of flavors and unique items. We all felt we had a real adventure in eating and would recommend this experience to everyone. We loved it!
Barbara, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your "adventure in eating," as you put it! Thank you for the review. We hope to see you again soon!
The borscht was very like what my Belarus born mother used to make when I was very young. The other food was of comparable quality. The vodka was excellent. If you want stick-to-your-ribs cuisine that will get you through the winter, you should try Russian. But it's not for those seeking a lite-bite. My only problem with Kachka was the music that was turned up so high that conversations was just about impossible, at least for these aged ears.
We are touched that our family's recipe reminded you of your family's! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. We appreciate the support.
