Russian drinking food paired with vodka. The warm and lively atmosphere at Kachka turns dinner into an event, fueled by a parade of dishes marked by deep and vibrant flavors such as dumplings, cured fish
and pickled vegetables. Kachka serves over 50 different vodka selections, as well a list of house made infusions, craft cocktails, and a curated list of beer and wine with a focus on Eastern European producers. The only Portland restaurant to be included in America’s Essential Restaurants of 2015, 2016 and 2017 by Eater, one of GQ’s Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2015 and Bon Appétit’s Best New Restaurant nominees in 2015, and was a semifinalist for 2015’s James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.

I love Kachka. One of my favorite restaurants. I wanted to take my mom but she's very weird about trying new food. As soon as we got there, I knew she was confused by the menu. I ordered for us and figured she might enjoy it but wouldn't really be that impressed. Boy was I wrong. She loved the food so much we ended up getting a second helping of everything. The waiters were polite and helpful as always and at the end of the night, mom couldn't stop talking about how great everything was. This was my first time at the new location and I loved the new atmosphere. The old one was great too but this was a nice mix of modern and old world charm. I can't wait to go back again!
Consistently terrific! Simply, my favorite dining experience in Portland.
Great food, great service. It was nice to check out the lunch menu too!
When making a reservation try to secure a table in the front section (not in the back room). Service could be better, but there’s only so much one can hope for in PDX...
Kachka is the best restaurant.
This is my favorite place in Portland. Every time I have someone visit the city, I make a reservation here. We share a few infused vodkas, we eat some of the awesome dumplings, and we have a few more of those infused Vodkas.
The ambiance can't be matched, the James Beard award winning chef is not to be missed, and every single thing is amazing.
Thank you so much for your continued support! It means so much to us!
Yes, great food. Service: great. Ambiance is mediocre, at best. Horrible commerical building, zero character. The interior is mediocre, again at best. Some tacky "Russian" crap on the walls. Stupid. The metal tables, for a place with price-structure like this, are deplorable. Overall, the food is amazing, the physical plant is deplorable. No class at all.
Hi Stephen. Our restaurant is decorated with artifacts from Bonnie's childhood home and kitchen, reproductions of famous Russian paintings, photographs of Bonnie's family, and a wooden façade depicting Baba Yaga's house on chicken feet. We're sorry to hear you did not enjoy them, but we wouldn't call it "tacky Russian crap."
One of my favorite restaurants - great food, fabulous drinks, foodie staff. Just don't go with anyone hearing impaired, or you'll have to text across the table. Its loud, even when its not full.
Thank you for the support, Anna! We appreciate it.
Love food, service and great atmosphere. If they get busy, the service can be slower... but that would be same for any other places, and they tried to make the best to serve us.
I will totally come back for the dinner and do vodka flight!
We'll get your vodka flight ready! Thank Takako!
The food was exquisite on par with the best Russian food to be found in New York and Washington DC. Also better than the tourist food to be found in Saint Petersburg LOL. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the food and provided very good suggestions. Pricing was good considering the food quality. Definitely will go back.
Thank you, Allan! We're so pleased you enjoyed your experience.
Happy hour is a great value & the food is delicious. Wait staff seems a little overwhelmed.
Thanks for joining us, Rebecca! We appreciate the stars.
This was such a unique experience for all four of us! The cons: The portions were small and so we didn't get much to eat since we were sharing each dish four ways. So it was like tasting "nibbles". I was still a bit hungry after spending $200! I thought the prices were a bit high for the small quantity on each plate. Not too much of a selection for dessert. The wait time for the dishes coming out was a bit long. I now see why they allow 2 /12 hours to eat! Believe me, you'll need it. The pros: the food was outstanding! A must is the lamb skewers. UNREAL. If we had known they were that good, we would have ordered TWO as we each only got 2 pieces of lamb and the birthday boy got the last piece. It was fun trying all the different foods and one vodka flight. The free parking right next to the restaurant was a huge plus. We would definitely go back and order a bit differently. Our tummies were singing for hours! It was definitely the most unusual dining experience for all of us and although there were a few things that we didn't like, there's no denying that the FOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! And THAT is what we will remember.
Thanks so much for celebrating with us! We hope to see you again soon.
Authentic Russian Food experience! The ambiance, the food, the music all brought me back to my childhood Russian/Ukrainian food. Superb!
Katya, that's one of the best compliments we can receive. Thank you so much for joining us!
What a wonderful find! Excellent food and attentive service; maybe a tad bit overly attentive at times, but not annoyingly so. I have no doubts that this will become a regular goto for an authentic Russian dining experience.
We're happy you enjoyed your dinner! Thank you for the review.
Yes, especially for birthday and other anniversaries. My girlfriend really loved the place!
Thank you for celebrating with us! We hope to see you again soon.
katchka is an absolutely phenomenal experience, every time!
Thank you so much for the support!
Excellent, interesting food, plus unique non-alcoholic/alcoholic drinks. Have eaten in the real Ukraine and another former SSR, and this is even better! Parking was available when we needed it to reach our entertainment destination on time, but it's a short walk from the 15 bus. Will keep returning to enjoy other menu items we didn't have room to chose this visit. Decor is wonderful, enjoyed the folk music too although this location can be a but loud for table conversation at times.
Thank you so much for dining with us! We're so happy you enjoyed the menu. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!
We had a great time celebrating the life of my Russian grandmother. The waitstaff were kind and generous with their service - we ordered a lot of infused vodka and many small plates, which I'm sure was a lot of work on their end. The food is always innovative, approachable, and delicious and we will remember the night fondly.
We are so honored that you chose to celebrate with us. And many small plates and vodka infusions? -- that isn't work at all! Sounds like you really did it right! Thank you so much for the review.
Wonderful Russian restaurant. Started with Caraway infused vodka, which was great, and I don't even like vodka. Proceeded to order the mak-a-rita cocktail, which was a perfect sip along drink throughout the meal. Dinner consisted of heirloom tomato salat, herring under a fur coat (couldn't resist that), sour cherry dumplings and stuffed pork cabbage rolls. A perfect combination of tasty foods. We'll be back next time we are in town.
Thank you for making us part of your Portland trip! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your dinner. See you next time you're in town!
Everything was wonderful! Food and service. Only downside is that the music is way too loud.
Thank you for joining us, Layla! We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you again soon.
It was date night and was thinking of trying something different so we chose Kachka. We had such a great time and food was amaaaaazing!! Waitress was friendly and very helpful in choosing our dishes. Food was amazing and tasted so great.
Thanks Kachka for a lovely experience! <3
We are so happy to have been part of your date night! Thank you for the review and we hope to see you again soon.
Omfg!!!! This place is awesome!! They have some really interesting drinks. I had the 'you've got mail'. Excellent drink!!! We started with the Kutab. The lavish is unbelievably delicious and baked perfectly. We had for mains the Golubsti (cabbage rolls) & Tabaka (a wonderfully spiced and baked chicken thigh quarter w/ potatoes). Not one bad bite!! We did tea sweets for 2 for dessert. Service was impeccable!! Can't wait to go back and try some other things.
Thank you for joining us for dinner! We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed the meal.
Such a great experience! Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable of the unique menu. Great with a group, so you can try even more dishes!
Thanks so much, Rebecca!
I was given the Kachka cookbook so I was very excited to taste some of the dishes I had read about. The excellent waitress helped us order an interesting range of dishes and drinks and checked on us often but not too often. The food was fantastic, the salmon caviar with blini, the unusual vodka flights and the rabbit in a clay pot will have me dreaming until I can return.
Leslie, it is such a pleasure to read your review. Thank you for supporting our business and family recipes! We're so happy you enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again.
Honestly didn’t know what to expect as I have not eaten this style food before - we loved it, delicious and for sure want to come back for more
Thank you for trying new things with us, Julia! We hope to see you again soon.
Wow. Always love the vodka and salads here.
If you like hard boiled eggs, then wow are you in for a treat. Overall, the food was meh. Everything was overwhelmed by either salt or underwhelmed in flavor. Things that were pickled, needed more pickle. Things that were “smoked” had zero notes of smoke. The salmon rillette was bland and tasted like canned salmon. The house cured salmon roe was bland and tasteless. It’s almost as if their cure removed the fresh briney flavor of the roe.
The place is loud! Like super loud.
Strike 1: the tarragon soda sounded really good. I ordered it and they were out. ON A FRIDAY NIGHT! Very disappointing. We both got ginger beers and were never offered a refill. Kind of a bummer.
Strike 2: the buttermilk soup tasted like dish water. I think we both had 1 taste of the little shot and were not impressed. This was a very poor concept of a chilled soup. Sour and badly seasoned.
Strike 3: the veg pate or whatever it was came out on broken crisps and made eating the indiscernible vegetable mush messy and unpleasant.
Maybe the trick is to drink a lot of vodka and not care that the food is mediocre. I don’t know. Came highly rated to us, and boy were we disappointed.
The black currant dessert was good, best thing we had. Did not taste like black currant however.
Will not return.
I go here almost once a week now it seems. Every time I am there the staff welcome me with a “welcome back” of some sort. Even whom ever is simply dropping my food. Always get some variation of the same few dishes (but always the sour cherry dumplings). I even love the mugs the coffee come in, I think I order it sometimes simply for that. Always just an experience, as opposed to just a meal. Thank you to the staff for being so wonderful constantly and sweet. One of my Portland favorites, maybe even my top.
Thank you for your support, Kayla! We appreciate it so much!
Lunch menu was limited and food didn't seem as good as it normally is but I understand they just had construction issues and were struggling to remain open (no fault of their own). I've been to Kachka multiple times before and it was always outstanding for dinner. Horseradish vodka is phenomenal.
Thanks for stopping by for lunch, Rachelle. We hope to see you again soon.
Food kept arriving at our table we didn't order. Waitress described my caviar as "the small grayish kind" and then it came bright yellow and she called it "saffron cured". There's no such thing. Herring under a fur coat was salty beyond belief in the herring layer and bland as all get out in the other layers. Wine selection left my husband wanting. He didn't order another glass. The dumplings were gorgeous ... really enjoyed them! Our friend's chicken had to be sawed off the bone with a butter knife that was provided. Really an overall odd experience.
We appreciate that you took the time to leave feedback. Caviar and roe are very important to our program and we are sorry there was confusion in the ordering process. We hope to see you again in the future!
Fun birthday dinner
One of the best meals we have had in a long time. All the plates were well presented and extremely tasty.
Thank you for joining us, Judy!
The dumplings are amazing and the herring in a fur coat was also very good! I was nervous it try it but pleasantly surprised. There is a HUGE selection of vodka at all different price ranges and the waitress was very knowledgeable when we asked her for recommendations. We also had the plum skoner for dessert, and that was a 10/10
Erica, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed your dinner and dessert! Thank you for trying new things with us.
Portland has many excellent restaurants and usually we pick different ones each time we visit (from California). But we just have to visit Kachka every time. It is very unique and very seldom we can eat and drink Russian dishes / champanskoye. The service is always top notch. Highly recommended to everybody who is curious about (or like) Russian food.
Thank you so much for the support. It means so much to us! We look forward to seeing you next time you're in town!
Wonderful! The food was exceptional and exotic!
Our main server was annoyed with us but otherwise everything was fantastic! The owner went above and beyond to make our grandmother’s 90th birthday special. The other servers were also wonderful who tried to accommodate us. Festive atmosphere, food was good, drinks fantastic! We had a lot of fun! Highly recommend Katchka.
Spacibo, Katya! Thank you for celebrating your grandmother's birthday with us!
Fabulous food as always and fabulous service as always. .
Thank you Maggie!
Absolutely the best service I have ever experienced! The food was beautiful and perfect. We will definately be back!
Thank you, Lucinda! We're so glad you had a nice visit!
The chef's choice is a great way to experience a lot of unique dishes. The dumplings are incredible and the vodka infusions are a great complement to everything.
Thank you for the review! Hope to see you again soon.
