We came to J & I to celebrate our friends’ anniversary. Like all of our experiences here, it was phenomenal. Chef Jason Franey’s new summer menu was delectable! We had almost one of everything on the menu. Some dishes that stood out to me were the halibut hand rolls, which are not your typical hand rolls as they are wrapped in sesame leaves, which gives you this fresh, light feeling after your last bite. I LOVED the Hiramasa tartare- probably my favorite thing. The yellowtail tostada is a must. The tempura fried mitake and egg yolk raviolo were some other stand outs. And for dessert we did the yodel and peaches and cream puff with an espresso martini, and just wow. My mouth is watering just thinking about it all. And the service was impeccable! Can’t wait to come again!
everything with our experience was wonderful. the food was absolutely delicious, the service was on point and the ambiance and atmosphere were great. will definitely be coming back to try out the menu since it changes seasonally. highly recommended for celebrations as they go the extra mile to make your night feel special.
The service was impeccable. That's what sticks out most about my visit.
I tried the mazunta and fashizzle cocktails. Both were very well made.
I had the tomatoes with lemon curd and was pleasantly surprised how good those two together could be.
I also had the the seared tuna. While the tuna was cooked perfectly, it was not very flavorful. The cranberry beans were not fully cooked. HOWEVER, when I mentioned the the undercooked beans, the chef checked and concurred. They did remove it from my bill. In my mind that went above and beyond fixing the issue.
I had the oregano cake to go for dessert. While it was OK, I'd try something else next time.
I definitely recommend. You will be pampered for the night.
Delicious food with a very unique twist. An overall great dining experience
Small portions; beautiful presentation; great flavor. A bit pretentious and over-priced for what was delivered. Not a lot of selection on the menu. Very attentive service.
Riley was fantastic! Service from the moment I called to let them know we were running a few minutes behind to the moment we left was phenomenal. Food was delicious. It's been a while since I'd been there, but I will definitely be back!
We were in town visiting San Diego and made reservations here because we're fans of Top Chef and Richard Blais, like a lot of folks. We were able to reserve a seat outside which was really nice, due to COVID. They have street side valet service which was very convenient. The parking lot was converted into their outdoor seating area, which was evident but they did a nice job making it feel nice. The chair I was sitting on was a bit uncomfortable so we had to ask for another one.
The food was amazing. The snacks and small plates were a big hit. The entrees were alright. Highlights were the tempura fried maitake, crispy paper wrapped pork ribs, uni linguini, and bbq carrots. As well as the little whoopie pie they gave us for my husband's 40th birthday. Everything was such a flavor bomb and cooked perfectly. Service was great, friendly, and attentive.
There's just no ice served with water in San Diego, what is that about?
Very small food portions and very small menu selection. Service was not great either, I was very disappointed.
It was our 1st time dining at this restraint and it exceeded expectations. We shared small plates all evening and enjoyed everything. The service was excellent and the cocktails were good. Highly recommend
I had wanted to eat at this restaurant for a long time, but never really had the chance. My husband and I finally went for our anniversary and I left really disappointed.
I'll share that our server was really great, and the service overall was good. He asked why we were there and when we told him it was our anniversary he brought us a complimentary glass of champagne which was a really nice treat.
However, I was really disappointed in the food quality, portions, and value. Prices were high, which would have been ok for this occasion, but we really didn't think the food was worth the money. Portions are REALLY small. I'm a healthy eater and don't need a large portion, but I found these to be kind of ridiculous. My entree had what was probably 5-6oz of meat (ok), but seriously like only 2 tbsp of potatoes. I just really think there needed to be a little more and/or add in some vegetables to the entree selection as well. More so, the flavor and quality of the food was just OK. It wasn't bad, but nothing that wowed either of us. Overall, the combination of the portion and quality was just overall disappointing. I truly won't return because its just not worth it. I'd rather spend a little more money and have have a portion and quality that I feel have the value for the price.
Great food, really creative and interesting. Portions are small, so the cost runs up. Loud inside, and in a different way outside with the planes flying over. Service is usually good, and very knowledgeable, though our drink order was forgotten.
The Hawaiian bread was to die for but the short rib left me still hungry. $57 kinda expense for leaving the restaurant hungry
Everything was delicious and well-portioned, and the entire staff made our celebration special. We had a fantastic server who provided excellent recommendations. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Food was definitely a step above your average restaurant.
The zabuton (short rib) was cooked perfect , medium , and very tender. Other side dishes like port belly with balsamic vinegar was so tender and tasty with acidic flavor.
Downside is the jets flying overhead and relatively high cost
for each dish. Wished cost was half the cost.
Service was very attentive and water cups were always full.
Small, medium and large plates, mix and match .Excellent quality ,our go to place for event dining .
Server was very knowledgeable of the menu, flavor profiles, pairings and even the history of the restaurant and its series of chefs. Food was amazing, atmosphere was upscale. We aren’t used to eating at places like this but we felt comfortable and welcome.
This restaurant has a great vibe, and a really nice variety of delicious small share plates to sample several flavorful foods before experiencing one of the mouthwatering entrees.
Our experience was fine, but not outstanding. The menu, probably because of Covid staffing issues, is quite limited. Small plates were the best. The vegetarian entree option offered was not good. Extensive wine list. We were seated outside, directly under the flight path. I would suggest inside dining if possible.
Everyone was helpful. It was my wife’s birthday. Greeted her happy birthday and even personalized the menu with a happy birthday message, nice touch. And the food was fantastic!
Juniper and Ivy was perfect for a bachelorette/ bachelor party! Our server was fabulous… I recommend ordering everything on the starter menu as well as the tomahawk steak! We will definitely return! An experience for the books!
Exceptional small plates and exceptional service from Sonny
Amazing food, drinks and service. From out of town and made reservations here based on reviews. Server Ali was awesome and food, from appetizers to main meals were excellent. Recommended and I would return.
We were in town for my boyfriends birthday and had a friend recommend Juniper and Ivy to us and it did not disappoint!! The food and drinks were amazing (still dreaming about the oysters let’s be real) and the service was excellent!! Our server, Alex, was super knowledgeable and helpful and even sent over the bar manager to help us pick out a good amaro for our dessert drinks. We had such a wonderful time and are so sad we’re not in San Diego more often because this would be a regular spot for us for sure!
Best meal I had in San Diego, pricey but worth every penny
Great food. Didn’t like the cold stale decor. Chairs are not comfortable
Wonderful approachable fine dining. We’ve tried a few of the other “top tier” restaurants throughout San Diego and felt this concept leads the way. You don’t feel overburdened by the “fine dining” but the service, food, and ambiance sets the tone for a wonderful meal. The wine list is approachable and diverse. We usually go for a bottle but had been drinking cocktails prior so went for the glass list instead and had one of the best Roses Ive ever had. It’s clear that every aspect of the experience is well thought out and curated to a T. Most remarkable I think would be the service, you rarely get the attention to detail and catered service of this level anywhere other than a starred restaurant paying $200+ per tasting menu. I will not be surprised when Juniper & Ivy claims a well deserved star hopefully sometime soon. (Please don’t change anything though!)
Cold $130 ribeye after a 45 min wait.. returned it. Went next door to Herb n Wood which was great
We've been to Juniper and Ivy before the pandemic and at various stages since. Last night was excellent, at a pre-pandemic level.
After reading other reviews, I was a little worried about booking dinner. Some have commented about very poor experiences, both with respect to food and service. Both were quite strong for us, however.
We sampled 6 plates from beginning to end. Each was excellent, not just good. Special kudos on a tuna "large plate" that was perfectly prepared and memorably seasoned.
Service from Angela, as well as Meghan who was hosting, was top-notch. Good knowledge and timing. Very pleasant people. Other staff were fine.
I suspect that there have been pandemic-related staffing issues that may have lowered experiences for some diners, but, if our experience last night is an indication, the restaurant is heading back in a very good direction.
I do suggest the romaine salad with toasted quinoa but other than that everything was very middle of the road. We may have enjoyed our meal if the service was good. I had to keep flagging our waiter / bartender over. Hip vibe. Gorgeous restaurant but…. Doubt I’ll go back. This was my second try and I had similar experience the first round.
Long waits for appetizers drinks and food and was not the five star service I was expecting
The food has gone down hill.
Went above and beyond. Food was incredible
This was my favorite restaurant. Since they have changed the chef, I feel the food is not as tasty.
Service was slow. New menu items were good. The off menu burger not nearly as good as was in the past. Looking forward to see what the new chef adds. Nothing compared to the past but room for improvement. Took forever to get drinks.
What a wonderful meal! From start to finish, each dish was meticulously prepared, visually appealing, and most importantly, delicious. Service was attentive and it really felt like a special meal. We sampled a quite a few dishes and it’s hard for me to decide what my favorites were since they were all stellar. The standouts from each of the courses to me were the handrolls, raviolo, zabuton, and cream puff. Highly recommended - I can’t wait to go again!!!
Unbelievable. Amazing. One of the single best overall dining experiences I have ever had. 10 out of 10. Do not hesitate, book here if you can.
The food was amazing a little bit expensive but based from taste it was well worth the money. The wine selection was a little disappointing. Realizing it’s Covid that may be the issue but at these prices there should be a reserved wine list. Picking the car up after dinner was tedious very disorganized.
Fantastic meal and a wonderfully fun experience for my family and I. I love Juniper and Ivy and hope to visit again soon!
I the egg yolk ravioli was one of the best dishes I have ever read!
Riley at the front desk was fantastic and really helped us out. Kudos to him!
