Food was good but a little fussy with relatively small portions. Menu was limited. Ambience was nice but, overall, we felt that the value was just OK for the price.
Juanita & Maude continues to innovate and some of that pans out better than others -- but I love that they try and it's always at least good, sometimes great. Prices seem a little high for a "neighborhood" restaurant, but we tend to go here for special occasions anyway. Definitely a solid experience .
Hi there, I took my fiancé to Juanita & Maude after having a lovely birthday dinner with friends last year. The service was fantastic and the drinks were great, but the food left a lot to be desired given the price. We got the gnocchi and the steak, and both were completely average (the gnocchi were a little below average, very dry!). Was hoping for something a little more special.
Superb food, friendly staff. Wonderful experience!
Excellent food, super nice service, lively (Friday night), loud. Fun!
Good drinks. Main waiter gave excellent advice and took care of any question or problem.
Others occasionally wanted dishes before we were finished eating.
Super slow service with reservations that required a credit card hold. Food was good but not worth the effort. Sad
I don’t believe that a kitchen can deliver on a high level both Beef Yaki Soba and a Chile Relleno alongside Brick Chicken and Mashed Potatoes. A chefs soul can’t truly be in 3 cultures at the same time. I’ve had much better yaki soba from a food truck .
Amazing! Staff is so attentive. Food is anazing. Drinks are perfect.
The food was amazing and the service was wonderful.
J&M's New Years Eve's Prix Fixe dinner was simply superb! One of the best meals we've had in recent years, bar none.
The food here is really, really good. Every time we go, we are pleased and satisfied, and New Year's Eve was no exception. Interesting choices on the prix fixe menu, and though the atmosphere was lively, we could have a mutually audible conversation (a rarity these days). With such a varied menu, I have rarely had anything that I didn't find delicious.
I would recommend to anyone who likes pork and/or shellfish. I wanted to order the halibut but was informed by the waiter that the bacon portion (sauce?) of the fish could not be separated out. Since I don’t eat pork or shellfish my dinner options were limited. Also, small portions.
Service was outstanding, food was fine (3.5) but not remarkable for the price. Wine list was excellent. Dessert (sorbet) was tasty. Bread and dill butter were ok but butter was too sweet.
Meal was well paced, beginning with imaginative cocktails. Patient service, patient diners. Delicious appetizers, entrees. As evening progressed, the noise level went up. Our post-holiday event was a special birthday, and as we lingered over dessert, the host brushed by our table, hissing that it was time for us to leave. There had been no prelude to this, though in retrospect the people in line out the door looked annoyed to be left waiting. It was the first time that we were ever 'shushed' out of a restaurant.
We will return but hope that we will get a more respectful adios.
Juanita always a good time.
Every dish is done well and with imagination. Plus they were so accommodating when we were late due to traffic. I always feel welcome there even though I’m not a regular since I live an hour away. One of my favorite East Bay restaurants.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant with terrific food and drink, including a full bar.
The food here was absolutely wonderful, every dish thoughtfully prepared and skillfully executed. Our main courses: filet mignon and duck - were cooked to perfection. My one gripe is that service was uncoordinated, with just one server taking care of the entire patio, assisted in food and drink delivery by a rotating cast of staff. Our (very good) cocktails took forever to arrive, but the appetizers were presented very shortly after the order was placed. The kitchen got our main courses mixed up, and sent out the fish instead of the duck - so we were served with one main course for the two of us while the other was being cooked. We were celebrating a birthday, and they sent out a little dessert with a candle with our check (very sweet touch and I appreciated that it was discreet). And although they didn't say a word, and I certainly did not ask, I saw that they reduced my final bill by $40 or so, which was another very thoughtful touch. We will certainly be back, but this time will ask to sit in the main dining room.
Every meal I’ve eaten here has been excellent. The service is attentive and friendly. The cocktails are inventive and flavorful. The ceviche and steamed buns are consistently delicious for appetizers. The fried chicken is a standout but on this occasion, I tried the steak option, which was nicely seared and juicy.
We had a 7:30 pm reservation but when we ordered they were already out of the duck, one of the main courses. I understand the limited menu due to the small size of the restaurant but my husband didn’t see anything else on the main courses he wanted to eat and it took awhile to figure out substitutes from the side dishes and appetizer it’s. On the positive side the food is very good at the restaurant and the menu is varied and interesting. The homemade bread is very, very good, too.
Great night out with family. We had early reservations and didn’t have to wait. We all loved the food and drinks. Our only complaint was that it was really chilly inside. We sat by the window and it was a rainy evening but would have received more stars if it were a bit cozier and warmer.
Our favorite local restaurant. Always delicious.
It was my birthday. Lovely restaurant and service.
Thoroughly enjoyable with excellent food and friendly, efficient service!
Nice fancy trendy restaurant that uses local ingredients. Food tastes good and service is awesome. Could use a bigger portion.
Nice ambiance, good food with lots of choices for veg/non-veg diners. Friendly and efficient server and staff and good cocktails. What’s not to like?
Delicious food and excellent service. A bit pricy but probably worth the $. You need to make a reservation in advance as they always are full up from the moment the door opens at 5:30.
I absolutely love this restaurant! It's wonderful in every way.
I’m an older person (61) and thought the noise level was really high, I had a hard time joining in my groups conversation. Our table was on the long wall, and I thought it was cold (we were situated near the door leading onto the patio). On the flip side, our waitress was phenomenal, the food innovative and wonderfully tasty. The cocktails were solid. It was a special occasion, and other than the greeter at the door recognizing it, nothing else was done. The guest of honor thoroughly enjoyed the evening!!
Great service, delicious food, intimate ambiance, nothing else like it in Albany/El Cerrito area.
Portions a just a little small. Desserts especially good.
Enjoyed a delicious birthday dinner here with my sister. The service was excellent and each dish scrumptious. We started with the fried pierogi, followed with parsley-lovage gnocchi and both ordered the Swedish meatballs as our main course. No room for dessert, unfortunately. Look forward to coming back soon!
This restaurant is phenomenal. We appreciate that the staff is consistent, the menu changes constantly, and the food is just amazing. So many wonderful flavors in any one dish. Pricey but fantastic for special occasions.
love this place -- they hit the ground running and never looked back.
outstanding service, beautiful space and food, and delicious!
Everything is made with care and is extremely fresh. From start to finish a wonderful experience!
A reunion of classmates. My out of town foodie guests’ collective review: “One of the top ten meals we’ve ever had.” Cocktails were out of this world.
Ambience was fine. Person who seated us was pleasant and cordial. We felt our server wanted to be elsewhere, or maybe for us to be elsewhere. Perhaps the waitperson felt we didn't belong. 20% plus tip was given.
Was looking forward to dine here, heard great reviews.
Food was over sauced: tuna carpaccio was too sauced up, gnocchi was lost in its sauce, monkfish was served with bitter greens and a purée of ? And the butterscotch pot de creme was covered with cream fresh, poached pears, and a crumble mixture which masked a very bland butterscotch flavor.
A good neighborhood restaurant. Service is excellent. I found the food a bit saltier than I like. The French onion soup had too much cognac. In general, the food was fresh and well prepared and there were a variety of choices. Parking can be a bit of a challenge.
