Self-proclaimed as the oldest line cook in Houston, Jonathan opened Jonathan’s The Rub with the purpose and mission of providing guests with excellent food in an unmatched dining experience; a mission that Jonathan passionately maintains today. You’ll notice our restaurant features an open kitchen where diners can see, smell and hear the behind-the-scenes events of Jonathan and the other cooks preparing their dishes. (You'll have to experience it for yourself.) Jonathan's The Rub is a place for you to visit, feel comfortable, be yourself and, hopefully, leave with a few more friends and a satisfied appetite.

Our food was excellent and the value is solid. We unfortunately had horrible service which hurt the overall experience. 20 minute wait between finishing our appetizer (the dumplings are really good) and entree arriving. Only saw our server once after receiving the appetizer and that was because we had to track her down for a water refill. We had to grab someone else to finally get the check and a to go box. Would have liked to try dessert and more wine but she never came around. Very frustrating for such good food.

Made a res on Opentable. Got to the restaurant and the girl behind the counter said I had no res. After a few minutes she said she’d find a place for us anyway...doing us a favor. She went off and never came back. Asked a server walking by if we could sit at an empty table and she said yes. 15 minutes go by with no menu, water or cutlery. Flagged someone down to ask for it. Took 20 minutes for someone to come by to get out orders. Waited 43 minutes to get our food, and had to flag someone down to ask where the food was, and then they forgot to place the order for our sides! Had to ask twice before we finally got all our sides and then there was some attitude when we asked. Extremely disappointed in our experience there. When Jonathan’s opened years ago, you got bread on the table at arrival and most entrees included a house salad and 2 sides. Now you pay for each individually. Wine corkage fee is very high, discouraging people from BYOB, which has always been a selling factor for this establishment. Jonathan’s has gone from an affordable neighborhood eatery to an overpriced mess.

Great menu with something for everyone. Their bruschetta and veal parmigiana are my personal favorites. Their wine by the glass offers the best wine deal in town. I am looking forward to their relocation soon to their new restaurant. Sam and Jonathan are most welcoming, and I look forward to visiting with them every trip in.

Jonathan's is a good choice for casual dining off I-10. It is nothing fancy, but has a good menu with a lot of good choices. Jonathan is from Brooklyn and there are some Italian specialties from his growing up there. The quantities of the food are a bit over the top, so plan on doggie boxes. The atmosphere is somewhat stark depending upon where you are seated, so definitely casual.

The local place for excellent food and feel like family! Love the BYOB and also their choices are all good for wine. Looking forward to new place but sad to say goodbye to this around the corner place.

Varied menu provides lots of good choices. Rainbow trout with mango topping with a side of delicious sautéed spinach was a real treat. Veal saltimbocca was a little too cheesy and a little too salty, but still fed a hearty appetite.

Normally I love this place, but it fell short this time. The food was marginal, the service terrible, and got stuck over beside the kitchen/ bathroom. Will give it another shot, but maybe at the other location.

Back to Jonathan's after a hiatus of many months (I used to work across the street - and it was a great spot - even a habit) to a nice lunch of outstanding Gumbo and Shrimp Tacos. I forgot to substitute sauteed spinach or cauliflower florets for the french fries to reduce my carbohydrate load, but my fault, not the restaurant's. Prompt unobtrusive service, sizable portions (no one goes hungry at Jonathan's - a holdover from his years designing menus for Offshore oil platforms perhaps), and congenial ambiance.

P.S. My colleague ordered an appetizer of crab cakes and I was treated to one- outstanding!

Every time we come the food and service are exceptional. Not sure if it was an off night, but the server had AirPods in and a few times didn’t hear us correctly when we ordered. It seemed a little strange that she was wearing headphones while taking orders.

Good food....service by committee=no accountability.
Got the salad order wrong....got.the chicken fried steak order wrong...small mistakes....wrong dressing
And gravey on the side (not)....mistakes a 5 star would never allow.
My steak was perfect and the mussel app was great. Probably won't go back...too many other great choices at this price point in Houston.

JTR’s menu has a large variety of food selections that provides multiple choices. The food quality was outstanding and the food proportions were generous. The service was excellent. This is a hidden gem tucked away in a neighborhood which enhances the dining experience.

Outstanding selection and fresh taste.

Had Shrimp/Grits which was a gigantic portion.

Colleague had lobster tacos that required fork/knife to eat due to large amounts of meat.

Highly recommend.

Was expecting the menu I reviewed online but was for the new Jonathan’s at memorial green. Poor job of outlining the differences between the two on line. Ordered chicken fried steak was overly greasy. Like small pools of grease on top of the steak. Disappointed

The food & service could not have been better. Our server was friendly, helpful & attentive.
We took our leftovers home because we wanted to enjoy our delicious food one more time.
Side note:
Our reservation was for 8:00 pm for outdoor seating but we couldn’t get our table until almost 8:20 pm since the people at the table would not leave. Not the fault of Jonathan’s staff but felt that someone needs to make notice to the people who are just sitting and visiting while people wait.

An old standby for casual get togethers. Bring your own wine for a minimal corkage fee. Comfortable but casual seating area. Food is better than average and for a decent value. Service is outstanding but not bothersome.

After staying away for too long, we had a corner table for four outside. The servers all introduced themselves to us, as a team. Bottles were opened, drinks poured, orders taken - all timed impeccably. There are so many great things on the menu - it was difficult to choose. We all chose well and the food was superb.

Food and service was wonderful as usual! We had a couple of parties of 10 sitting in the same room so the noise was a bit more than usual. The wait person asked if it was too loud and could move if desired. Specials of seafood were outstanding and the portions typical Texas size! Will go back!

Had a lovely dinner on the patio. Crab cakes, meatballs Caesar salad, filet, chicken piccata and loaded mash. All were delicious. Service was good though we did wait about 10 minutes for someone to come collect our payment when we were finished with our meal. Otherwise a very positive dining experience.
