Jack's Bar & Steakhouse
Fresh Maryland lump crabmeat, remoulade sauce, arugula, cayenne
The food was decent. Not as good as I hoped. The tip is included in the bill (18%). My waiter never brought out our dessert even I paid for it. So he basically got a tip even though he forgot a portion of our meal and it was my wife's birthday. If I go back, it would be just for appetizers and beer.
Seating outside due to COVID-19. Went for restaurant week and was not disappointed. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Food was amazing. I had chicken with a hot pepper sauce and potatoes which was out of this world. Tiramisu was one of the best I’ve ever had! Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a low key, friendly and delicious place!
The food was not worth the money. The margarita pitcher literally had no liquor in it. Not worth it
We went for Restaurant Week 2020 and we both ordered the three course dinner. We went at happy hour on a Thursday and sat inside where the seating was limited and the booths were separated with plexiglass. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately.
We started with glasses of wine and I ordered oysters. They were cold, delicious and opened expertly. Next I had the mozzarella with tomatoes and basil. The tomatoes were not from the garden but they were good. He had a salad which was very good.
We both ordered the wet NY strip which came with fries. Both were cooked to our pleasure and were served cut into nice strips. The sauce was a bit too salty for me. We both enjoyed our selection and the portions were perfect. We didn’t have left overs.
We both had the tiramisu with expressos. The tiramisu was delicious.
The service was superb. Our server was engaged and personable. He was knowledgeable and efficient. The Maître d’ even came over to ask how we were enjoying the meal. We were not rushed and the staff even engaged in some conversation which was welcomed considering that we have been staying home due to the pandemic.
The other tables were filling up so we did not linger even though we were quite comfortable. The ambience was great.
The food was great. I was surprised that the tip was added onto the bill for a party of two at 18%.
Casual setting with great food. Tuna app, seafood ravioli and strip steak were great!
We decided to try Jack’s after seeing photos Instagram posted by a friend. The ambiance was classy casual and very comfortable. Our server was attentive and answered questions. Cocktails were generous and well prepared.
We started with Popcorn Shrimp and Grilled Octopus apps. The octopus was delicious but a very small portion (compared to like-sized apps at similar restaurants.) The shrimp was also very good.
Entrees were snapper and the small filet mignon. Both excellent.
I was surprised a bit by the check. A cosmopolitan was $16; Jameson on the rocks was $14. Higher than expected, but I can live with that. I am likely to return. There are many more small plates that we’d like to try.
Very small portions for the price,
Shrimp very tiny as well,
Will pass on food, drinks ok
Great food and the cocktails were excellent
Food was delish, so were the spiked lemonades!
Only seen the server 3 times once to take our order and bring our food finally to give us our bill. On top of that it was a 18% gratuity added to the bill. Which was too high for the lack of customer service. Other then that first and last time.
The food was delicious and my red sangria was awesome
Food was okay :) service okay as well
Never a bad meal and always great service. I would definitely recommend Jack’s.
Jack's has always been a favorite (pre-Covid) but the changes to the menu, prices and all and all food presentation is not what it use to be. Ordered the Kobe Beef Burger for $22 and it was a plain ole burger and thought the bread was stale. Food prices went up substantially and I question a restaurant's decision not to have proper silverware or glasses when being served inside the restaurant. I had wine in a plastic cup (and there was only one choice for a chardonnay) and the poorest quality of plastic utensils. Are they unable to meet guidelines for properly cleaning dishware?
We will not go again.the server was inexperienced
Great! A little expensive...
Friendly service. Food took a while. A bit overpriced, to us, but we will be back.
Perfect food and perfect service EVERY TIME!! Jonathan was our waiter and he was incredible. I truly think this is one of the best new spots in new haven.
Great food and people
very unique steakhouse menu with some great latin, hawaiin, seafood flavors mixed in. Something for everyone with still a very focused menu. The Man's salad and Ceviche were amazing and yet steaks cooked to perfection. College st is a foody part of New haven- great location. Its casual and has a pub ambiance but there were families there and a few romantic corners so its got everything. Did a nice job of being Covid Smart with handling of menus, food and cleanliness! Great father's day dinner
Very good food, but it is on the pricey side. The bar area is loud due to music and tv's being on, but you are still able to carry on conversation.
Great people, food and atmosphere!
Despite the current times of COVID, we were seated in a reasonable amount of time based on our reservation. The service was good and the food is always top notch. The owners are always so welcoming and making sure that your experience is the best.
By far, best steak house in New Haven.
A little pricey but worth it! Everything we ordered was delicious and our waiter was attentive and very pleasant!
Not a good experience. For starters, we were not familiar with many of the wines that were available and our waiter had no advice for us. My entree came with the sides my wife ordered and vice versa. We were a party of four. My NY Strip was more fat than steak. I literally had just a handful of edible bites. At least the fries were ok since that was primarily what I ended up eating. I would expect better if I had spent $10 on the steak. My wife ordered lamp chops medium rare and they were pretty close to well done. We had traveled from out of town, was up at 4am the day we went and had missed lunch. By the time we got there, we were too tired to have them cook everything all over again. The waiter never came back to check how our meal was anyway. It was early, around 5pm on a Sunday night so it wasn’t that crowded. I typically don’t write reviews but they had no excuses. I’ll definitely pass next time I’m in New Haven.
Celebrated two birthdays
Great night - dinner before the shoe at Shubert - steak was great - love the 20% off if going to the show
Was looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner with my 8 year old daughter before a show at the Shubert. Very convenient location. Had the meatballs small plate. The meatballs and sauce were Perfect. Then ordered the NY strip. It was cooked to perfection. Daughter had pasta from the kids menu. She enjoyed it. I would definitely go back.
Fantastic serviceand the food was amazing! It was my first time here and I would definitely go back!
We celebrated 2 Birthdays, had a wonderful meal and enjoyed our experience. We started with drinks and apps at the bar. Our waiter was prompt and very accommodating. Our steaks were delicious and cooked properly. Overall good time and will return again.
Overall very good. Steak, NY Strip tender and tasty. More of a Bar atmosphere than a fancy steak house.
The food was good and the service was good. I would not return because the noise level was too loud.
I have been to Jack's several times and it is one of my favorite restaurants in New Haven. Normally they have great service and fantastic food. Unfortunately, the night we went (for an early Saturday evening dinner at 5:30pm) there was a college "pub crawl" that changed the entire ambiance, service and quality of food. The noise level was crazy. It was just so different from the other times we had visited, like a totally different restaurant.
I hadn't even finished my dessert and a server (not my server) came over and asked me to leave because there were others waiting for a table who had a reservation. Although I ha a reservation myself, I was insulted that I was the one asked to leave when no one else was asked to leave. When I asked to speak to a manager, the manager apologized and stated that there was actually no one waiting to get a table. He went on to say that he would have the server who approached the table come over to apologize as well, but that was all that he could do because he was his "blood brother". The manager further insulted and offended me with his comments by stating that they usually look to ask people who may have been there for a while to move to the bar. However, it took an exteremly long time for my meal to come out after ordering.......If you want good service without being insulted and/or offended, this is not the place for you.
This was my first time at Jack’s for happy hour & the food, ambience & service were all perfect! I wish I had gotten the name of our server because he was great & helped with my many questions & recommendations. I will definitely be back for happy hour & for dinner as well.
I made reservations a week in advanced and was not told that there would also be an event taking place that night. My date and I were forced to sit in the small closed off room to slightly lower the noise level. We could barely hear each other while trying to hold a conversation. Our waiter was nice but he mixed up our order and my steak was not cooked properly.
I would definitely recommend steakhouse. The food was excellent, however the service I was received was really disappointing. One of my friends asked for extra bread and our waiter took approximately 15 minutes to get it and then we asked for mayo for our fries when the food came out and he didn’t even bother getting us it. We asked a different waiter with a very nice groomed mustache if we can have mayo and he got it in less than a minute. That waiter towards the end of the night was basically our waiter. I asked him about the type of desserts the restaurant had and he was nice to explain in detail, he didn’t rush at all. The food is great but that waiter was terrible.
The entrees were great -- especially the steak and the short ribs -- but the sides left a lot to be desired. My companions twice cooked baked potato was awful. It looked like it was made days before hand, frozen, and then microwaved. It was inedible. Also the desert we had, the chocolate mousse creme brulee, tasted like pudding with blueberries in it. It has no crispy top, like creme brulee. It was not very good.
We will definitely go back here and give it another shot, since my short ribs were the best I have ever had.
Jack’s is okay but there is no wow factor with the food. It was cooked correctly but nothing stood out. The NY strip was okay but not worth $40+ and the baked potato was just...well a baked potato, no signature. My wife had sea bass and it was average. The bar area was attractive and lively. The drinks are similar to every pub on the block. There were a few other unsatisfied customers next to us, maybe just an off night for the kitchen.
