A local gem and well worth the effort to make a visit or three. J. Devoti is that wonderful combination of great food and dining environment.
Very cute atmosphere, good service. The food was good/average but the menu is fairly limited. They do have a very nice wine list
I can't believe this place has been under our radar for all these years (13 to be exact). Was 5 Bistro until this last spring. Was also a Farm to Table concept then but now Farm to Table with Italian twist. Food was great, portions generous, service attentive and value priced. First time here and a pleasant surprise. We will definitely be back.
Great as usual. This place never disappoints and the chef is friendly and personable to customers. Best bread in the Lou.
The food was top notch and relatively reasonable in price. Our server was excellent and the pacing was wonderful. On my list of top two best in STL.
All four of us totally enjoyed our meals and the extra little touches such as an amuse bouche before the first course. The atmosphere was cozy and the noise level was wonderful --- a rare plus in St. Louis restaurants these days. We realized that, on a winter night with snow predicted, the lack of diners contributed to the noise level. While bread is extra, I would suggest ordering it as it is absolutley delicious. All in all, this restaurant choice was a definite winner!
Everything was great!!!
I can't say enough about the bread plate, olive oil and butter we ordered as an appetizer. I could have made it my meal. I ordered pork loin and it was OK, not outstanding. My husband ordered the burger. Although it was good, it was cold. The wait staff is very attentive but I would avoid coming at opening time. We had to wait for a cocktail and the appetizer.
Every bit as delicious as its predecessor, Five Bistro! Wonderful service & beautiful food! We loved it!
My husband and I ordered the chef's tasting menu last weekend and it was amazing! The food was delicious, beautifully presented and creative. We opted to have the wine pairing included which was a great decision. The wines complimented each course perfectly. Although it was six courses, we did not leave overfilled. The portions were spot on. What a great value and opportunity to try local foods!
Food and ambiance were both superb. It's great to have a "farm to table" fine dining option on The Hill. Really glad we tried J. Devoti Trattoria.
We always loved Five Bistro and were excited to try the new concept. Unfortunately, the food was innovative in concept but not exceptional in execution. Nothing was terrible but nor was any item the four of us ordered a standout.
Also, as a Italian inspired farm to table concept, I'd except more graciousness, warmth and generosity. I can't imagine any Italian changing for bread or delivering an order of deviled eggs with only three halves (although it was clear we had four people...I mean, where did the other half egg go?)
The food was absolutely delicious! It instantly became a new favorite for us.
A very comfortable place with very good food. Reasonably priced.
Very nice wine list.
FANTASTIC dining experience. Do yourself a favor and take your significant other there for a meal. You won’t regret it.
Excellent, non pretentious farm to table menu. Service and food are always top notch. Best restaurant in town.
Very good food. I had thought it was new, but seems to be very similar to its predecessor at the same location, Five Bistro. It is just as good as before the name change.
Fantastic wine and beef short rib
Everyone has a favorite restaurant or two, this is one of ours for good reasons. Dependable creative cuisine served in an elegant but relaxed setting. Menu changes often as locally sourced foods are in season. But some signature offerings appear frequently enough to indulge again. Perhaps the greatest wait staff around! The owners treat them like family and it shows. Superb bar service and wine list.
I brought two of my friends to celebrate August birthdays, and we had a wonderful time and the food was delicious. The atmosphere is quiet and friendly and conducive to good conversation. The service was efficient and unobtrusive. Wonderful place to spend and evening with friends.
We are frequent dinners in resturants all around the US , and I have had excellent meals and bad meals but never has the experience been bad enough that we had to leave the resturant , and it had nothing to do with food!! we never even got to appetizers or as a matter of fact drinks. we were late getting seated and that was acceptable with a nice apology and we were fine with it, our server was very nice and apologized again and I said it was not a problem ,we decided to order a nicer bottle of wine and I figured if I am going to spend one to two hundred dollars on wine I wanted to get their sommeliers suggestion. our server went to get him , meanwhile he showed up to the table next to us poured their wine and I thought he would be over to our table next , he didn't make any eye contact and walked away. our server cameover twice to say sorry he"ll be right over could we order any thing to start, so we ordered two appatizers , i am not sure what happend in the back but in about half an hour he comes walking fast to our table leaned against the wall put his one leg up on the wall and said " they tell me you need help with your wine , what do you want to know? " and continued to say that he is also the bartender and is very busy! so what will it be?! so we commented that maybe you're just too busy for us tonight, he to our surprise said whatever, so you want to try this another time?? it gave me the impression that he was not too happy for being sent to take care of us, and I wasn't sure if this was a response to my ethnicity or just an immature individual who doesn't value his job. when i told him were leaving, he said ok and just walked around us and told his manager we were leaving. so we left an hour after our reservation after having driven 3 hrs to town with nothing but a glass of water. To be clear this review has nothing to do with the quality of food which has been great before under the same chef when it was Five Bistro.
Food was tremendous atmosphere was great the drinks from the bar outstanding the music could’ve just been a little bit louder may be even a little bit of Frankie (Frank Sinatra). We’re always made to feel welcome that’s important.
Victoria, our wit staff person, was excellent. We like the vegetarian risotto.
I wish there were other ratings besides VG and Excellent. All my VG ratings fall between VG and Excellent! It is an outstanding value, and a great place to eat!!!
We waited 45 minutes to get a drink, after asking twice where were our drinks! Very limited menu, small portions and youhad to pay for bread and butter! Would never go back!
Love the new menu. Everything was great. Service is always perfect and though the room was packed when we were there recently, service was comfortable, not rushed.
Food was amazing and the service was equally amazing. We will be back.
For six of us, J. Devoti set a table in a separate area. Perfect! I still don't know why it changed from being the Bistro that we have loved for years, however. Some of the menu is now standard Hill, but the old Bistro's touch remains in the rest of the menu to warrant many return visits.
It was my first time at this restaurant. I did not have a good dining experience. We sat outside and the evening was beautiful. Service was very very poor. We sat for 30 minutes until someone came to help us.... once we ordered a glass of wine it was another 20 minutes. They gave us a complimentary amuse bouche.... we ordered a Caesar salad.... lettuce very limp and croutons stale...not crispy...veggie pizza was tasteless....crust needed salt.... veggies were very scarce.... pasta was ridiculous.... 20.00 for the order of ravioli and it looked like a tasting portion ....3 ravioli to the order.... they brought us delicious tiny cookies to complete the meal..complimentary..... not a good experience....I’m sorry to write this.
The menu has excellent options and is different than any other offering on the Hill. Great wine list with excellent offerings.
Service was slow and scattered on this night, which is not the norm here.
We’ve been to Chef Davoti’s restaurants a few times over the years and have always enjoyed the cuisine. Wanted to try his new farm to table concept. We dined very early, enjoyed attentive service and loved the clean, modern decor. The burger was delicious! I had the scallops with corn. They were yummy but I have to say that for the price (I think about $24), I should have received more than 2 scallops!
We had a fantastic dinner. The food was creative and well executed. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. We will back!
This is a gem. We lucked into trying this amazing farm-to-table restaurant on the Hill. We were lucky to get a reservation on a Saturday night, but boy was it worth it. We had their artisan house made breads and a Westphalian ham and Eckert's peaches appetizer, with a bowl of olives they pickled in house. I am not a huge olive lover, but I ate half the bowl and would have eaten more if Joy would have let me...but she was busy eating the other half. Joy had the maccheroni al pesto and I had the Alaskan salmon, which was as good a salmon as I have ever eaten, and I lived in Seattle for ten years. The family owned restaurant had extremely attentive service and the ambiance was terrific. For what you get, it isn't outrageously expensive either. If you love good food, this is the place.
Excellent food and a very interesting menu. Our server was wonderful and answered any questions we had regarding the various dishes. Quiet and cheerful atmosphere.
We have frequented this restaurant before it changed format and name and loved it. We like everything about it's new phase. The food is exceptional and we enjoyed all of the choices which were similar to what we were used to. Next time we'll try some of the new menu items. The garden was not open but we also look forward to eating outside. Maybe a hamburger!
I was so excited to see one of Food and Wine’s Best New Chefs right here in St. Louis, I had to book the table. Of course, I also had to try the tasting menu. I convinced my husband and son to do so with a wine pairing. The first course was beautiful and consisted of several small plates. It was very dramatic as our server explained the wine, others were setting down dish after dish in what seemed a choreographed presentation. Every dish was creative, our favorite being the Kale Tree. It came with tiny scissors with which you clipped a leaf and then dipped in a dressing. The carrot jerky got mixed reviews, though I thought it was lovely. Other stand out morsels were the pork belly which melted in your mouth, paired with a mustard sauce and a German Riesling and the creamed corn dish with three varying corn textures. A big surprise when the cheese course came with a Belgian beer. All in all, hats off to edgy creativity, though we were disappointed that there were no reds included with the pairings!
Service was good but the food was not good at all. Worst meal of the year. Undercooked, over cooked and bland.
Wonderful new ambiance Service is outstanding! The tasting menu wine pairing was incredible. The 6 wines were perfect. Very farm to table /sea to table. Prices are reasonable. I highly recommend
Striking large interior as we walked in the preferred side door. Quieter dining is to the right, while the bar and larger tables are to the left, nicely separated. Dining room walls are uniquely painted with striking photos. Back corner table was particularly quiet and pleasant.
Took a bit too long to get the bottle of wine and one cocktail to the table, the reason for the less than excellent rating for service. The farm to table emphasis led to an interesting Caesar salad; a tender, moist and tasty chicken breast and an exquisite lemon dessert. The wine list was not extensive but more than adequate while appearing a bit pricey. We recommend it highly and will be back.
As an aside, we initially chatted outside the restaurant with the chef, whose birthday was also on the same day as my wife, whose birthday we were celebrating. His later visit to the table was much appreciated.
