sliced fresh Hamachi with ponzu sauce
Small venue, rolls are quite good.
Really enjoyed the sashimi and grilled butter fish. The tempura was also excellent. Just remember to ask for extra rice. Highly recommend this place. For Japanese food.
The older woman was very rude and keep insisting people wore masks between sips of their drinks. The younger one was very nice! The restaurant is VERY basic with apparently good food as it was full of locals. The wine choice is virtually non existent and it seems to be a beer and sake place. There is no toilet on site and you need to borrow a key attached to a spoon and go to the corner of the carpark. Never again for us!
Great food and good service for a good price. Would recommend.
The server was polite and accommodating. We enjoyed the food, but the hamachi was not of the texture we have come to know. We suspect it was partially cooked
and were disappointed. The shrimp tempura was the best we ever had. It was light
and crisp. The tofu was wonderful. The rest of the dishes were all delicious. It was
our first time at this restaurant and the decision to return was unanimous. Thank you for a wonderful meal.
Requested seating at the sushi bar, but was seated at a table instead. Sushi service at the table was slow towards the end of our meal.
NYE dinner was fantastic! Great food and exceptional service. Casual and comfortable. Thoroughly enjoyed
Hidden gem in town with authentic Japanese dishes~oishi 😋
Chef sashimi omakase was amazing! Loved the garlic edamame as well.
Very fresh fish, authentic Japanese flavoring, and plentiful menu selections, it was a excellent dining experience. I would recommend Izakaya Matsuri to anyone without hesitation.
No prices on the menu for sushi so was surprised to find out the tuna plate was $75
Izakaya Matsuri is the small neighborhood bistro you return to time and time again because the food is so good and the staff is so lovely. It’s a cozy place, so keep your party to 2 or 4 people.
Good food but the price impacts its value. I will not be going back.
There are other izakayas and Japanese restaurants I would prefer for both for food and cost.
Amazing food! Great service! Will come back again and again!
Great food but not worth the $$ they ask. Our experience was ruined by an incredibly rude waitress who scolded us for being late (we were 10 minutes late and they have 15 minutes grace period for reservations) and said that we have only one hour to get our food and leave. I would have understood such behavior if there was a long line but the restaurant had maybe 40-50% occupancy rate. And it remained 40-50% when we left.
While a little obscure in terms of its location, this authentic Japanese restaurant will satisfy anyone looking for a restaurant that reminds them of authentic Japan. Food is excellent!
This is our go-to izakaya. Great service from all of the staff especially Julie. Food is interesting, great quality and consistent. Price is fair and ample onsite parking as well as street parking especially on weekends.
I would never have known about this place had it not been for OpenTable. It is a small hole-in-the-wall, not too fancy joint. But apparently foodies know about it! I heard people speaking in Japanese, Chinese, Korean. The food was excellent--we had: hamachi ponzu, housemade tofu, eggplant, torneido roll, butterfish misoyaki, salmon roll. Everything was so yummy and we were stuffed afterwards! Totally not what I expected at all!
Food is fresh & delicious. Staff is friendly & the explanation of their recommendations are appreciated.
Food was over all good. Fish was fresh, but nigiri was dressed with some type of light sauce already which we didn’t know. It wasn’t described in the menu. We also like nigiri with just fresh fish not dressed with sauce already when it’s served. Since one of my family members is allergic to wheat, we always bring our own soy sauce that is gluten free. Wahu steak was nice and tender, I ordered medium but it was almost well done. Tofu dishes were good! They make their own tofu. Desserts were amazing! Servers were great! They were very attentive.
Good enough food. Poor hospitality. Might as well take out but then many alternatives. Leave the place to a few of their regulars.
Excellent as usual. My guest was really enjoyed our meal and raved about the freshness of the food. It’s a small and quaint restaurant but don’t let that fool you. Reservations are a must especially on the weekends. Highly recommended.
Saw the negative review and was hesitant to visit however had the complete opposite experience with my family excellent and polite service and sushi was super delicious. Prices were pretty decent compared to other places we’ve been to after Covid. This is our new favorite sushi spot.
Great fresh sashimi. Omakase is the way to go
Not much of an atmosphere, and sitting at the sushi bar was disappointing as you could not see anything because the stools were too low...however, the food was absolutely DELICIOUS!
Fantastic sushi and sake !!! We lived in Japan for many years and Izakaya Matsuri reminds us so much of our time there. 120% authentic. The seafood is flown in fresh from the Hokkaido fishmarket in the basement of Sapporo airport. Everything comes in sooo fresh! The toro and hamachi melt in your mouth they are so tender. The Uni with quail egg is my fav. Best tasting Uni this side of the pacific! Julie is a knowledgable and friendly manager. She suggested a great sake for our 24th wedding anniversary dinner, Ozeno Yukidoke. Sooo good! Great food, beverage and service. Its a bit small and loud, just like a Japanese Izakaya. You will need a reservation to get in. The food and beverage are very high end, so be prepared to pay a premium for them.
High quality Japanese food! Seafood is very fresh and everything is delicately seasoned. We had a great dining experience!
Again, superb. If they added fresh grated wasabi and turned down the a/c a bit I wouldn't want to leave. Continues to be my favorite restaurant near Waikiki for quality of ingredients.
Everything was very delicious!
Excellent can’t believe I live nearby and only found it now. Will return.
The food was good but the presentation of the food and the decor of the dining room did not justify the high prices.
The restaurant is located in the back of a parking lot, a ten minute drive from the Waikiki Beach.
The first impression is not good as there is no ambiance whatsoever. The place is very small. One booth and a few tables.
The fish quality is good but not excellent. The overall experience from ambiance to service (COVID Era) to food quality rankled below our expectations, with the ambiance being the lowest point. Not a date night place.
Just like being in an Izakaya in Hokkaido. Most of the seafood is flown in several times a week directly from Sapporo's airport seafood market. The Ahi, Toro and Uni are some of the freshest I have ever had and I lived in Japan for many years! Small, and very authentic, reminds us of so many Izakaya in Japan, but without all the cigarette smoke! Yay!
Hidden gem, you will love this place! Highly recommended by Diamond Phil !!
I never write reviews because most of the restaurants here have generally good food and service. We were so angry at spending so much $$ here and left with a bad taste in our mouth.
We came here a month ago with our son and his friend and loved the food and service by younger woman server.
Last night we were very disappointed in our service at Izakaya Matsuri. It would be nice if, even in this COVID-safe period, that the older woman server would be grateful to customers and be as pleasant as possible. When we walked in they blurted out instructions and QR code contact info stuff. We were directed to a table and seated, then felt rushed to order. My husband, who is the nicest person to everyone, asked a question about the menu to older server when she barked back at him across the restaurant and let him know they didn't get our contact info! We quickly completed the info on our phone. Then after our completion of info. she stood eight feet away from us (not kidding), then barked out answer to his question about menu items.
A few minutes later we saw her talking to a white gentleman who was maskless. She stood ONE FOOT from his face as he asked many questions about menu.
We were appalled and disgusted. Never returning here and never giving any
recommends. We spent well over $200. It's too bad the food is good, but the ambience is not.
The food is always outstanding. Definitely a neighborhood gem worth spending money on.
Great food! Good atmosphere. Little pricey, but good quality sashimi worth it.
It’s very good and service was great! But pretty expensive for what you get though!
Just like eating Japanese food in Japan. Oiishii Desu!!
