About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
The oldest family run restaurant in London. Spanning 6 decades and three generations, Il Portico Restaurant on Kensington High Street has been cooking regional Italian specialities since it was first opened in the 1960"s by acclaimed chef Pino Chiavarini. Still managed to this day by the same family, siblings James and Francesca draw heavily from their roots, providing simple, authentic Italian food from their home region of Emilia Romagna and beyond. Whilst the family are always on hand to welcome you in, our Executive chef, Eduardo (currently in his 25th year of service with us) concentrates on slow, homemade dishes with a sense of history and provenance.

Wonderful restaurant! It had a really nice vibe and the staff were all friendly and efficient. We did find the food a bit too salty unfortunately however apart from that really can’t complain :) also the dessert (we had the sicilian cheesecake) was absolutely divine.

Went there for a romantic dinner with my girlfriend. I’ve been going there for 15 years, Il Portico did not disappoint.

A fabulous end to the Easter week and had lunch with some longstanding friends who live around the corner to Il P.

Our favorite Italian restaurant in London- whose food is on a par with the very best we’ve ever had in our many trips to Italy . This family owned restaurant is small, cozy and unpretentious with friendly waiters and waitresses with a full menu and changing specials (such as venison). Every time we’ve been there we see long-time customers being warmly greeted. The 49 bus stops across the street and the Kensington high street tube stop is nearby.

What a lovely restaurant - beautiful food in a quiet cosy atmosphere. The venison tagliatelle ragu was delicious and the Sicilian cheesecake was one of the best cheesecakes I’ve eaten. Can’t wait to visit again.

Il Portico is a family run restaurant with excellent service and great food. The portions are of a decent size. I was very surprised how high the prices are now there, in comparison to even 3 years ago. The pasta is around 30 pounds in comparison to 19 (three years ago). There is no choie of a decently priced wine. So from the local Italian restaurant it turned into high end priced restarant. It is a pity. We took 2 antipasti and 3 pasta dishes and one bottle of wine, the bill was over 200 pounds.

Very good food. We only wanted a light lunch and the choice was spot on. There was a muddle over the bill which was sorted so pleasantly and with such grace it certainly encouraged us to want to revisit the experience.

What a fabulous authentic Italian restaurant! Vittoria and the entire staff were so welcoming, and the food was simply outstanding! Had the clams and spaghetti (Vongole) and it was the best I’ve ever had! Vittoria makes you want to return to Il Portico next time in London!

Authentic Italian in a small, intimate setting. Tagliatelle with venison and pork belly ragù rivaled what we had in Italy.

We had the prawns to start, which were absolutely delicious. The bread dipped into the lemon chilli butter 10/10. I had the duck with orange which was a special and my husband had the pork pasta and we shared the dark chocolate cake for dessert. It was our second visit and was as good the first. Will definitely be back 💯
