Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.     We've been dining at Il Fornaio in Del Mar since it opened thirty years ago. Food has always been fairly good, but the service spotty. We've tolerated it because the ocean views and atmosphere are lovely. Last night, it took twenty minutes to get a glass of wine after ordering it. In addition, although we made our reservation weeks in advance, requesting a table on the patio by the glass windbreak, we were seated on the other side of the patio next to the busing station.

    Left my $160 sunglasses in the booth and returned within 1hr and no one was seated after we left and the glasses were missing. Only person to go to the booth was the person who cleaned it. Haven’t heard from the restaurant and was disappointed that somebody stole it hem within 1hr of leaving.

    Took advantage of the no corkage July invite. Juan, our waiter, was extremely cordial and professional (sometimes when you byob, the waiters get a little miffed). All in all, a very pleasant experience. The only comment is that I requested an outside table as was told it was unavaiable to large parties (of which, I did not see any large groups on the deck)

    Pizza never disappoints. Great view so go before dark. Lovely patio and indoor options. Friendly knowledgable staff. Neighborhood gem for sure.

    Delicious dinner with great service. Loved the gnocchi appetizer and the duck entree. My wife really enjoyed the black cod entree. The meal was enhanced by great service from Samantha.
