Contemporary Italian
Il Dandy is home to California’s first Italian Michelin-rated chefs, father and son duo, Antonio and Luca Abbruzzino. Their eponymous restaurant Ristorante Abbruzzino, situated in the Calabrian region of Southern Italy, was awarded a Michelin star in 2013, the first restaurant in Calabria bestowed the honor.
Staying true to sustainable measures and guided by seasonality, the Chefs Antonio and Luca utilize the bounty of local farms to offer market-driven dishes presented in a contemporary manner showcasing the talents and mindful technique of the kitchen in an approachable setting. Guests of Il Dandy can expect a contemporary approach to cuisine rooted in Calabria, but with a nod to the history of decades past.

I was really looking forward to trying this place after reading about it on Eater San Diego. Our entrees were very underwhelming and not impressive, especially for the prices. I was very disappointed with the presentation and serving size. When I got my food I joked that it looked like a dish I would make for my one year old. Wish we had stuck with our favorite across the street for a much better value. The service was great, but we came to eat. The music was also too loud and the genre didn't go with the type of restaurant. Big bummer since this was our first date night in a while.

Our second time dining here. Food quality has declined rapidly to our dismay. Had gnocchi with tomato sauce that had little flavor. Chicken fried rib eye that was overcooked and fried in oil that was not at the proper temperature.

Service was slow despite the restaurant not being full at prime dinner time. Took forever to get the check. We stopped at In N Out burger on the way home.

Excellent food, the Tiramisu was unlike any other, and the service was phenomenal... will surely visit again to try other things on the menu!

Our second time here. Service was great again, however our food this evening was over salted. Would have been a better experience had that not happened. We’ll be back to try it again though. Drinks and atmosphere are fantastic.

I had really looked forward to eating here as it appeared on a lot of best lists. I was very disappointed. The space is cold and the table layouts are uncomfortable. We were seated next to a large art piece which had the table right up against the sculpture base. So on one side we were completely against a wall. The restaurant was so cold and the large doors were open. I noticed most people were wearing their jackets.

The service was good. We were assisted by several people who were all very nice.

The food was not as flavorful as you would expect. Every dish needed salt. Most disappointing was that both main dishes were served lukewarm. Basically I think the dishes sat at the pass since the restaurant was busy. We had waited a while for our food so we didn't send it back. The dessert menu was mostly unappealing and the tiramisu we settled on was not very good. I doubt I will return. Also $6 for bread seems excessive. The drink menu was good.

Muy buena experiencia, lo único es que pedimos dos copas de Proseco que estaban incluidas en nuestra cena por ser menú de tiempos y nos la cobraron aparte, ya no quisimos decir nada pero nos quedó esa mala impresión del lugar fuera de eso todo estuvo muy rico.

I had a feeling that this was their first attempt at a Valentine's day fixed menu as this place opened up last year. Overall, not worth the $250 spent there (for 2 people). We sat down about 15-20 late in the reservation (got there 20 mins early). Took another 15-20 mins before someone greeted us at the table (we had to flag them down). The first course came out in OK time (before our drinks). The second course was piping hot for my wife, but my dish was cold (and took about 25 minutes). We mentioned this to the waitress and found out they were running out of ravioli and the chef was hand making more. I didn't want to send mine back because it would've been another 20 minutes (and I was starving). Then when the dessert course was supposed to be served, someone from the restaurant said they dropped the last batch of desserts and asked if we could sub an everyday cake. Ok, fine.

Nothing was done on the bill side to make up for the lack of service and weird events (even though the waitress said she would "make it up to us."). The chefs may be Michelin rated chefs but I don't think we'll be back. Maybe it was just a bad night.

We have come twice to this restaurant once during the opening and once on Valentine’s Day. Both times were dissing appointment with the food more so on Valentine’s Day than any other time it was a prefix menu and every item on the menu was bland except for the meat. The carpaccio was like roast beef and cook from the outside which made it hard to imagine that is carpaccio versus roast beef.

I’m not sure if it was because it was Valentine’s Day and a prix fixe menu, but it was the worst $300 I’ve ever spent. There was no redeeming value to any course of the menu, except perhaps the tenderness of the admittedly very small steak.

Went for Valentines Day dinner...probably not a great judge of the restaurant but hoped it would be at least decent. Food was terribly bland and dissapointing...it was a fixed price menu...you think they would have dialed in their few choices better...probably won't go back.

We were seated 25 minuets after our reservation time. No one was very helpful. They seemed extremely under staffed. Our server changed half way though the meal. Our food came out wrong the first time and had to be sent back. When the food did come out correctly it was great. We waited long periods for the food and just overall did not have good service unfortunately.

The bar was fantastic and we should have stayed there. Shunted off to a corner table, noisy and cold. The service was patchy. The acoustics were bad extremely noisy. Bar 5 stars the rest meh. So disappointed as we were really looking forward to eating here.

We were seated at 6pm. Immediately notified waiter we needed to leave by 7. He assured us it would be no problem. At 7:05 still no meal. The waiter was completely unrepentant. We had to box the meal and leave for the theater. The owner reduced our meal by 15%. Really furious that the waiter made no attempt to expedite our meal or show any concern.

For a night that was fairly slow we were quite disappointed as we heard great reviews on service. (Service wasn’t bad by any means, just nothing special) Food was decent at best 😕 it’s such a beautiful restaurant we were bummed to be so underwhelmed.

Excellent Italian cuisine, not the typical you'll find in Little Italy down the street. Fantastic service. Amazing mixed drinks and good wine selection. A bit cavernous inside, could use some warmth - very stark and the hard surfaces make noise level seem higher, even when not busy.

The food was tremendous! We enjoyed an appetizer, a salad with seared yellowtail (outstanding), several main dishes and a pizza. Lot's of food and it was all tremendous. Panacotta was one of the best desserts I've ever had. Cocktails and wines were very good. Service was polite and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Casual and contemporary environment. Good place for a celebration or date night. Highly recommended

We brought a friend here for dinner to celebrate his birthday and it was an overall good experience. It's not your traditional Italian restaurant and that's the best thing about it. Great food, well priced and a
nice wine list if they're not out of the wine you select. Our first two selections were out of stock but our
third was available and not only good but well priced.

Service is the best, knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Thanks again Scotty. We will be back soon.

We had been looking forward to Il Dandy for all the hype it's gotten since it opened. We can't eat as much as is offered on the chef's menu, let alone the private dining menu. So we opted for 4 dishes that we shared plus cocktails and wine. On the whole they were good, just not outstanding. The appetizer lobster with sorbet, tomato/apple salad with yellowtail, squid ink pasta with lobster and the night's special filet with cherry sauce were all good. All were small portions -- the lobster in both dishes was minuscule. The filet almost seemed mushy but well cooked and tasty.
Our service was wonderful from Scotty. We were attended to but not hovered over and the bussers knew when to leave the plate so we could mop up the sauce.
We'd go back again although the plate sizes were small for the prices asked.

Basically eating in an art gallery. The experience was great and the food was awesome. We had a couple of drinks, the broccoli, the sausage pizza and the ravioli. Everything was great!

I am not entirely sure. The dishes we had were ok, but we are also trying to limit carbs so I think their best dishes may be their pastas. I know their cocktail menu is not that strong. The service was good, but the food was just off the mark.

Good food...excellent, very attentive service. Staff is welcoming and engaging. Cool vibe...only complaint is the chairs at the bar are a little difficult to get in and out of but comfortable with backs once you are in and sitting :) I'd totally come back.

Ambience was very awkward. All food overpriced. Decor and lighting was off. We had a reservation and the restaurant was nearly empty, but they still chose to seat us at a very awkward table closest to the bathroom. Terrible. Service was fine, but food was subpar. Nothing impressive considering prices. Won't be back.

The drinks were pretty good. The food, ambience, lighting and seating arrangement structure left a lot to be desired. The restaurant felt cold and empty. A 28 dollar lobster appetizer where I had to search for the lobster is unacceptable.
