IL Bel Lago - From the Hill Ratings and Reviews
Had a wonderful meal at Il Bel Lago last evening. Food was outstanding the the service was top notch. Our server, John, made us feel at home immediately. He was professional, friendly and make sure everything went perfectly. We both had cannelloni and a mushroom risotto as an appetizer and they were both delicious. We split a egg plant salad based on our server's recommendation and it was equally as wonderful. My wife enjoyed her Champagne Chicken while I enjoyed the Filet for our main courses. They were delicious and we finished them both even though we were stuffed! They have a nice wine list with plenty of top notch choices. Restaurant was busy, but it was still quiet and romantic. The owner checked on us (and others) frequently to make sure all was well. Always a good sign. Will definitely return!
My girlfriend and I ordered several different dishes between the appetizers different salads in different entrees. Everything was absolutely amazing the flavors are unbelievable and overall experience was fantastic we are looking forward to going there again and again and again.
This reservation was for Valentine's Day, 6pm. Arrived and seated immediately. Server was Ray, who did a very good job, didn't hover, paid attention. We had the special of the day, Grouper ($40) and the President Regan Bowtie ($20ish) glass of wine, 3 beers, calamari and smelts appetizer($13). Total cost with tip $129. Not horrible for a special occasion. The pasta was very good. The Grouper was bland by itself, but when eaten with the sauce(which you are supposed to do) it was good as well. Was it worth $40? Probably. The appetizer only had 3 smelts, but a large serving of calamari. Toward the bottom of the plate the pieces were a bit oily, but that is to be expected. Overall, I would recommend this place for special occasions.
We love this restaurant and invited friends to join us last week; all was great except the waiter seemed to be in a big hurry to close out the evening. It was only a little past 8:00 pm and he came by our table three times in 10 min checking his watch.....we all picked up on it and wrapped up our evening earlier than we wished. Left the wrong impression for our friends.
Il Bel Ago never disappoints! Another wonderful meal, great service, and great ambiance! My wife and I have often dined there, and this time we brought the little ones. They loved the cheese pizza while we got to enjoy our delicious adult entrees and a great glass of wine.
The food was outstanding. The service was not. The server took drink orders, deliveree the drinks and was not seen again for over 20 minutes. No bread...nothing. When this was pointed oit his response was "well, we're busy." No apology, nothing done to try to make it up. Just move on to ordering food.
Also he promised dishes in certain ways then delivered very different food. Example my difficult, off the menu ordering sister, was told he would bring her broccoli, baby squash mix with --per her request- -No cheese...and with no explanantion he brought carrots and green beans. Sprinkled liberally with cheese. Again when pointed out - no apology, discussed getting her something else but she was "fed up" and didn't want to wait any longer at that point.
What food we got was skillfully prepared, tasty, if a bit pricier than a true restaurant on the Hill.
Outstanding Italian food at Bel Lago. Meatball appetizer, stacked salad, caprese salads were all excellent. Cannelloni and lobster entrees outstanding. The cannelloni is the best in the city. First class service as always. This is the top Italian restaurant in St. Louis.
We were initially seated closest to the restaurant outer door which was very cold. We did request to be moved to another table which we did and then everything was wonderful. One suggestion would be to have a curtain hung between the lobby and the dining area.
Have been here before long ago with good experience so, as it was close to our home and on a frigid winter night of New Year’s Eve decided to have a quiet dinner at Il Bel Lago. Arrived to see our table was ready, perfect. A band was in service, at first quiet and soft but as time went by, lively. Ordered bottle of Moscato, good selection, fruity and bubbly. Ordered Antipasti duo at waiter’s recommendation. Ravioli was nice. Shrimp was good but both over sauced. Ordered a split Caesar salad which arrived shortly, tasty and just right portion split. A full would have been too much. Entree choices we made which were 1/ filet served with green beans and julienne carrots , which were supposed to have potatoes but came without. Taste was terrific, perfectly done. 2/My plate was spedini, veal spedini, which is a personal favorite gleaned from many years of freshly prepared and perfectly grilled veal, however, this dish was disappointing. The veal was so thinly pounded it was a sheet of paper., it tasted as if battered not breaded. The prosciutto and cheese filling was a ground compote of highly spiced stuffing from which I could taste neither prosciutto nor cheese. There were currants?? Atop this round was again a healthy ladling of sugo, same stuff as in the shrimp appetizer. The sugo was tasty, don’t get me wrong, but it did not compliment the veal. A side dish was requested with the veal, risotto Milanese, was excellent and I could have made a meal of that alone.
We had dessert at home. I will definitely return to this restaurant, however will make simpler entree choices. We enjoyed the wait staff, they were very professional and attentive.
A great New Year’s Eve dinner with Carmelo and Frank Gabriele. Our reservation for 3 was respected. Our waiter was very helpful and made a well received recommendation. All 3 of us thought our meals were excellent. Even on New Year’s Eve, and with a packed house, we could carry on a conversation in normal tones.
I have dined at Il Bel Lago several times, but this my first revue. I truly love the restaurant. Very, very good food in a warm and gracious setting—prepared and served by people who care.
Ended up here for a New Year's Eve dinner and had an outstanding meal with great service. We hadn't dined here for awhile; not sure why.
The wait staff were courteous, helpful and friendly. Our waiter gave great information on our meal and menu choices that helped to make the meal more enjoyable.
The only criticism would be the lackluster bread and small pouring of oil and balsamic; at least leave the bottles at the table so you can top it up as desired.
The shrimp appetizer was very good. The mixed seafood linguine dish was outstanding, as was the canneloni.
The suggested wine pairings were spot on. Good selection of wines available; however, the by the glass selections are limited. Bottle prices appeared reasonable for a good portion of what's available.
Reservations are recommended.
If you are a Costco member, keep an eye out for their discount gift cards, as you can save about 20%, although they are not always available.
Good ambience; great for a romantic meal.
Everything is exceptional at IL BEL LAGO. My favorite restaurant for a real night out. Knowledgeable waiters who give you just the right amount of attention and specials that I always look forward to are two reasons I continue to suggest IL BEL LAGO. The owners have always been there when I have dined there and the food is consistent.
We went as a family for dinner over the holidays. The service was amazing. The food was delicious but...overpriced. I assume I am paying a lot for the ingredients, but still—I think it was too much. And the lighting was way too dark! I understand mood lighting, but I still need to be able to read the menu. A smidge lighter would have been much better. Desserts were excellent.
Our family ranging in age from 5-84 spent a wonderful Christmas Eve at Il Bel Lago. My husband and I have eaten there on a few occasions. Our grandchildren are accustomed to eating at fine restaurants, but I was a little hesitant as I don't think of this as a "family" restaurant. We couldn't have been more pleased. We had a wonderful table, our waiter and the wait staff were attentive and personable, and the food was incredible. Although there isn't a "kid's menu", the waiter informed us that almost everything could be made in a smaller portion size for them. As it was a holiday, the restaurant was full, but the food and service were impeccable. Highly recommend Il Bel Lago!!!!!
While the overall experience was fine. We were not happy that it took such a long time to receive our checks at the end of the meal. Additionally, our server some how charged the same card twice which cause a lot of confusion and further delayed our departure. If you have time restrictions I would not select this restaurant.
