Hy's Ottawa is my favourite restaurant in the city and I often recommend it to colleagues, who are always as impressed as I am at the quality of food and service. The best feature is the Victorian ambiance, which is always delightful and lovely. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There is nothing on the menu that I would not recommend!

My husband and I went to Hy's for the very first time even though we have lived in Ottawa for years. We both love our steak and thought why not try it out. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and the lighting was dim but not overly. The staff was very attentive and pleasant however I must admit the meal was simply OK; not terrible but no wow factor to it either. We ordered one steak tartare to start (it was OK but not much flavour to it). Then we ordered one Ceasar salad to share which they prepare at your table (good salad but not the best salad I ever had). The main course itself was also just OK. My husband ordered the special (steak and teriyaki shrimps) with baked potato and it came with a generous portion of asparagus. The steak was OK (he asked for medium rare and it was more on the medium side), the shrimps were very good but they were put on the steak therefore the steak was covered with teriyaki sauce. The potato was actually a little dry. I ordered the steak neptune and it was tender but not fabulous. Very little crab meat (shredded - looked like it came from a can) and béarnaise covered the steak. Same about the potato - very dry. My husband had two drinks and I had one 6 oz glass of wine and the total was $200 (not including tip). We have purchased steaks from a reputable butcher and cooked them on our Green Egg BBQ and they were better than the ones we had. We also have been to Sterling a couple of times on the Quebec side and they do steak much better than Hy's. I'm not sure what attracts people to this restaurant but I'm happy to say I have tried it but wouldn't consider going back.

Drove to Toronto for dinner at Hy's specifically and it did not dissapoint. The food was fabulous as always. Steaks cooked perfectly to order that melted in one's mouth. The ambiance was Hy's perfect. Dimly lit environment-quiet enough to relax but hustling as one would expect. We had our 12 year old with us who hadn't been to Hy's in a long enough time to remember it. The experience was wonderful for him. The Children's Menu is excellent and the cheese bread amazing. The service was solid.

Hy's Ottawa has always been a favourite for my wife and I and once again the food and ambiance were great. We had the Chateaubriand for two which included a 12oz filet of mignon, many vegetables and a bearnaise and wine sauce. At our request, the filet was cooked to medium well and arrived juicy and flavourful. It was delicious. A highlight had to be the side order of onion rings..they were crispy, light and so tasty. The California Pinot was also quite good. As one other reviewer mentioned, the light levels are quite low but for us, on a date it was perfect. It is expensive but its worth it for a special occasion.

Food was excellent and service was polite in the restaurant. Beware the bartender who thinks he knows it all, but doesn't.

Modernization is needed. It felt as if we were eating in a very old fashion place. The meat or praws and scallops were very good and well cook, but obviously the trend of the 70, lots of cream and butter. If the meat is good, there is no need for that much unnecessary fat addition. Also, it is now known that you need to have veggies in your plate, mostly green if you eat meat. In any case, the look of the plates are very outdated, the veggies served were pretty much the ones, Canadians had in their plate in the 70, no fancy veggies there. You would expect that a plate that cost 40-50$ would entail, asparagus, cooked tomatoes, grilled peppers, any type of mushrooms, spinach, fiddlehead fern.... forget it, the veggies you will get are carrots, green beans (which likely come from frozen bags) and a mountain of mash potatoes. Really, we are in 2015, you can get fresh veggies all year round. The service was good but certainly overdoing it, especially when you see the deceptive plates you receive. Definitely, the place requires, modernized attitude for food and service. The only positive note, the ambiance is nicely quiet and cosy. There are now new restaurant that offer quality food for cheaper. As to a good filet mignon or steak alone, you can cook that as well at home on your own barbecue; if you pay that price you deserve something extra in your plate. When your dinner at home looks better and tastes better then in a restaurant, then do it yourself and spend the money on good quality meat and a nice bottle of wine.

We booked in Hy's for our 5th wedding anniversary on a trip to Ottawa from the UK and were not disappointed! We had excellent service and the food was exquisite... The carved chateaubriand at the table side hit the spot as was cooked to perfection. Even though we were full we couldn't resist the dessert and again were not disappointed! Thank you Hy's!

My husband and I had not been to Hy's for at a good while. We had a very significant birthday celebration and Hy's is a very special place to celebrate it. We were seated at a lovely booth for two and we were served by one of the best servers. The caesar saled was superbly created at our table and it exceeded expectations in taste. The chateaubriand for two was cooked to perfection along with the huge menage of vegetables. Thank you to all who made our evening special with good food, excellent food and a lovely ambiance.
