My girlfriend and I do not usually frequent fancier dining locations but we wanted to try HoQ for fun. Everything about the experience was great, but expectedly, a decent amount of money for food and drinks.
All around great! Thank you for the slice of cake for my wife’s birthday. Will be happy to come back again because you could really tell we were wanted to be there and the employees were happy to see us.
HoQ was delightful. My wife and I had the dinner for two without the bottle of wine. Starting with the appetizers of burnt carrots and bibb lettuce salad, proceeding to entrees of salmon and prosciutto wrapped chicken and ending with orange creme brulee. Everything was amazing from start to finish. The service was excellent, atmosphere was quiet to allow for conversation and once again can't speak enough for the food.
We will be back. Probably in the start of the fall to see what dishes are inspired with the change of the seasons.
Food and service outstanding in all regards, as usual.
Quiet ambiance, terrific food, fast service in a safe environment.
Chef Suman Hoque thoughtfully sources local and organic ingredients for delicious and fresh dishes. Our favorite restaurant in Des Moines.
As always HOQ is; attention to detail, perfect plating, choice food selection and preparation, stellar staff and always CLASS!!
The outdoor seating is one reason we feel we can eat at a venue again.
The staff are masked, attentive yet allow the diner distance.
ALWAYS a pleasure!
Great venue for a quiet and delicious dining experience.
Went to HoQ for the first time for our wedding anniversary. The service was prompt and very professional, they really made us feel special on this special date. The food was outstanding, we had a cheese tray for a starter that had a great variety and was some of the best we've tasted. The entrees were played beautifully and had amazing flavor, I'm sure this is partly due to use of local ingredients but I feel it's mostly the chef's skills that really make the food so remarkable. We had a great time and will definitely recommend HoQ to our friends.
HoQ was over the top! Service was great, food was exceptional. The staff was very knowledgeable about the menu. I can't say enough good things about them.
Food was great and service was terrific. Unique cocktails were delicious. Social distancing was not a problem. We've done take-out there but finally got to enjoy dine-in eating for the first time in months.
Great food. Great service. Local ingredients. Quiet and made for great dinner conversation. I'll definitely be back again.
I think this is the only game in town. I ordered the lamb shank, it was fabulous, came with risotto, that I found to be seasoned perfectly, and had the addition of beets, which gave it a slight sweetness that was very delicious. I have eaten here frequently and enjoy it more each time. I would highly recommend this farm to table venue.
Food was inconsistent. We had a Ceasar salad (excellent), cheese plate (very good), Lamb Loin (good), and Steak (poor). The steak was tough, and flavorless.
Service was genuinely very friendly, but slow.
Price was pretty high for Des Moines.
Awesome food and experience!
Very good food. We were unaware that we were taking part in their Valentine's prix fixe menu on 2/15, but the choices were good, and it was date night. It made for an expensive night.
No issues with the food nor the servers. The only qualm I had was the lengthy delay between courses, and I left a little hungry. Not exactly what you would expect after a 5 course meal.
Lovely place with great character and service - my only complaint is that is was unclear that the tasting menu was the *only* menu available for 2/15, and I wish that had been more evident booking through Open Table.
We still had a lovely time, and the food was good, but we felt the the cost for this specific menu was just a touch too steep, and we may have booked elsewhere if we were aware of the mandatory testing menu prior to booking.
Again, we still had a great time, and we will be back in the future!
Based off this experience, no. I’ve had lunch and dinner here and was really let down on the Valentine’s Day experience; or lack there of. Could not order off menu and the menu that was set forth was terrible. Each course, except the duck, was not palatable. This was not of value and the only thing that could have made it better would be exceptional service or a memorable experience. Neither one of those was had.
Had the Valentines Day four course meal. Way overpriced for average food.
The server did not speak to me when I entered. She ignored me and spoke to a couple who came in after me and seated them first. After she indicated my table to me I tried 4 times to get her attention to ask for menus and water. I had to ask for silverware and a napkin. There was hardly any one in the place. She wasn't remotely busy. I did not feel welcome in your establishment.
Absolutely love the food here at this local farm to table. I literally have been incredibly happy with every single item I have ever ordered here
The food has always been great here but this time we found that the service was very slow.
What a wonderful place. We ordered the filet and salmon. The salmon came in a unique parchment paper which the server opened, very fun. The filet was especially good. The grass fed beef was perfect. The seasonal vegetables were perfectly roasted carrots and potatoes. They had a rich sauce that paired so well with the beef. We were also treated to a chef's appetizer which included some naan bread and some chips with chili, delicious. We also received a delightful macaroon at the end of our meal. Knowing that everything is grass fed (including the dairy!), wild caught, or locally sourced was perfect. It was a great place to go before our show at the Civic center.
Food was great however our dinner took 3 hours because the service was so slow!
Ashamed to admit that I hadn't yet been to Hoq as a resident of downtown. Not sure why. But, I will be back soon and often. Food and drinks were outstanding. Service was spot on. They support local farmers & producers. I'll be supporting Hoq frequently from now on.
Pre-show dinner, so were there very early and the place was pretty empty. The food is made from excellent fresh local ingredients. Some culinary highlights, but leaning more toward comfort food than haute cuisine. The wines “by the glass” were very good. Ambience is a bit lacking: bare concrete floor and walls, bare windows, no window coverings. No ceiling.. all a bit industrial. Service is good. Food came promptly and we were able to indulge in dessert without any threat of missing the opening of our show at the Civic Center. Ask about the cheese board if it is not offered to you.
Food was outstanding but the service was not good. It was new year's Eve with a prefix menu. I cannot figure out why the service was so bad.
First visit. New Year Eve's 4 course meal with paired wine. Couldn't have been better.
Delicious food and friendly staff
