Outstanding food, great service. We always enjoy dining here.
The last night you could dine out and we picked Fried Chicken at Hollyhock. The best service and food as always. Great home cooking. Plus we had leftovers to take home.
Love the food
Family birthday get together
I have visited Hollyhock Hill for 20 years. In reading comments, I am just amazed at ANYTHING negative that is written. It is the same moist, perfectly seasoned chicken I have always enjoy. Sides are on point. When just my husband and myself go, we each take our assigned bowl when delivered, he eats ALL of the beets and I hate having to share the cottage cheese, although I can have all that I want. Love the signature salad dressing - and the new lettuce option that is now served.
When people address the noise level, it is what it is. Family Style is conducive to large groups and I never feel that the seating is crowded, but it is open - so sound travels.
Often their are children ( always welcome, and treated well) and that does add a bit to the din. We dine early, fewer people so lower noise level, but I would not care either way.
I think the new ownership is doing small things to put their mark on a long loved menu, but they have not messed with perfection in the least.
Thomas is a treasure!
Love Hollyhock Hill!
It was the first time I had visited in years and I was very pleased. We shared the fried chicken dinner between five people and it was more than enough to go around. The food was close to how good I remember it being years ago. The chicken was very tasty and the butterscotch syrup with dessert took me back to childhood. The BEST part was our SERVER, Jessie! She did an excellent job taking care of us. Very attentive and genuine.
Excellent service and food!
We had not been to Hollyhock in several years and it is definitely not as good as it once was. The dining rm smelled musty, the restrooms were not clean, and the food was just fair. I would not recommend Hollyhock if you are having a special occasion such as anniversary's, valentines day.
It is just fair and I doubt that I will ever go back.
Celebrating Mom’s 80th Birthday at 7 & even being a delayed until 7:50 was tolerable because we have been a fan of Hollyhock Hill for many years and has been a part of our celebrations for about 8 to 10 times per year and also carry out about once a month. The f
The food was delicious and the service was very good. I feel that there were too many people in a very small space so the noise level was high. It was hard to have a pleasant conversation.
It was a major disappointment! Have been there down through the years ( 20) and loved it. Not sure what has happened! Possibly new management???? I took my Father, Daughter and 2 grands there for a 6:30 dinner on Sunday evening Feb. 16th.
Although the place was almost empty, we were seated right next to a table with a party of four adults who were extremely loud the entire time they were there, we could not help but hear every word of their conversation, thus my grandchildren who are 10 and 12 heard the one of the ladies in the party tell a story about getting drunk, etc. Plus we had a waitress who had only been there 4 days and needless to say, not skilled, our service was way below standard.
Also the ambience has changed so much, the beautiful white table clothes have been replaced with some sort of light raw wood colored tables that do not go with the traditional decor that we loved and had become so accustomed too. Something is just not the same.... Hollyhock used to feel like a nice rather elegant place to have a special dinner.
Being that Dad loves old fashioned southern meals we ordered the Fried Chicken dinner....lets just say it was the most disappointing $150.00 dining experience.
I would also like to add, there were probably not more then 2 dozen other dinner guest in the entire place, so all of the above was of the staff being overloaded.
We have been there before. Always great service and great food. And the portions are huge. We took home enough food for 3 extra days!
Family friendly. Great fried chicken. Easy parking.
We waited over an hour for our reservation. It was disappointing. The food was delicious, but not worth the wait.
It was very busy, as it was Valentine’s Day. Our reservations were at 6:30, and closer to 7:00 we were seated.
It took a bit of prompting to be seated. There was a table available, but it was being saved for a a later reservation. I was not happy, and I’m sure it was apparent. The owner did end up seating us at the table, and gave us complimentary drinks.
Thank you! Food was amazing, as always!!
We had a very enjoyable Valentine's Day dinner. We like the home cooking served family style and very much appreciated Thomas' attentive service.
I never write reviews, but this made us consider submitting one. We have been to the restaurant a few times and have had god experience in the past. We went there for Valentines Day and it was disappointing. Had a reservation, but had to wait 30 minutes and the it took another 30 minutes to get service after I had to stop a server. We probably won’t go back again...disappointed.
Very good service by Thomas. Table was ready, although a little small. Food was excellent.
Ordered early-bird special. Was the first one there when they opened. Very quiet with soft music playing in background. Fifteen minutes late two more people showed followed by 6 more. They were loud. No longer could hear the music. I guess they thought it was OK to talk loud without regards to other guest. These type of guest can ruin it for others. Hope management reads this & place a policy to educate such guest on proper dining etiquette.
Chicken was delicious, mashed potatoes were ok, green beans were delicious, pickled beets very good, salad was ok wished they use different greens/ lettuce. Biscuits were dry and a little hard & crumbly, would prefer wheat or white yeast dinner rolls. Desert was a small bowl of ice cream. Just the right amount. Ice cream had a very good flavor.
They no longer have linen tablecloths. I always thought linen tablecloths added to the ambience. Made the place a little more special.
The service was very good. A little on the high side on price but very good overall except for the loud group next to us.
Chris did a superb job. The food was excellent and bountiful. Very well prepared and paced lunch. Perfect location for a family gathering. Will be back.
The restaurant was extremely noisy. We had the mixed chicken dinners. The chicken breasts were done to perfection and crispy. The remaining pieces weren't as good, a bit greasy. It took a while for our orders to be taken.
We've been coming to Hollyhock Hill for literally decades (each of us before we met), and although there have been ownership changes and minor tweaks along the way, it has remained a go to place for a great family dinner. You cannot beat the fried chicken, the sides are always good, and the ice cream with your choice of sauces at the end is a nice touch. Highly recommended.
I was treated to dinner there years ago by a coworker and always wanted to go back someday. I happened to be in Indy for a few days so I took my son and his family there. It was just as special as I remembered. The food is great and the service is so very friendly. A great neighborhood restaurant.
Compared to how it used to be, this is not as an enjoyable experience as it used to be. They must be short staffed because we hardly saw our waiter and my soda was empty just about the entire meal. No butter for the biscuits. Had to flag waiter down to ask for sides to be refilled. Seems like every time we go, they cut something else off the meal. Used to be iced tea, coffee, tomato juice, veggie platter, and warm clothes at end. I can see why there are always openings on Opentable. Also sooooo loud there. When there are large parties they need to utilize the room dividers.
The menu had several selections but my party all ordered fried chicken dinners. This included family style salad with no dressing, cottage cheese, corn, green beans, biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy. Each dish was prepared fresh and cooked well. Portions were huge! My only issue was that everything was bland for my tastes. I appreciate more flavor/spice than this meal provided. The meal was topped off with a scoop of quality vanilla ice cream with toppings. Good service and still a good night out.
Birthday dinner with a toddler. Server was fantastic
Our server, Nikki was outstanding. We had a party of eight and Nikki did an terrific job making us feel at home. The noise level was much too high for me but that is a personal preference. I was really surprised at the cost of the food, it was quite high looking at the facility. The taste of the food was good.
Delish family style
Aside from going the first 35 minutes of our visit without being approached by any member of the wait staff, the rest of the experience was good. Food was good and family-style serving was a nice change from the usual restaurant service. They definitely don’t let you leave with an ounce of hunger left in you.
When we did have a server come to us, we were informed that there was a mixup with who was assigned our table. For us, it doesn’t excuse that no one took notice for 35 minutes to ask if we had been served (we didn’t event get drinks ordered in that time). Also of note, no concessions were made to rectify our lost time - we paid the full amount of our bill. Understanding that this may have been a fluke on one night, still feel like it’s worth noting.
Getting together with my neighbors. It was nice to be able to talk without a lot of noise
Simply the best fried chicken in Indy! I always enjoy visiting Hollyhock Hill for family style dining. The fried chicken, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, rolls with apple butter and beats were fantastic as always! I also added the chocolate cake for all of us to split with the ice cream that is included with the meal! Very good! I highly recommend anyone to try Hollyhock Hill! A sure winner for lunch or dinner!
As always, great food, great service and pleasant atmosphere.
Service was excellent.
Too noisy - could not carry on a conversation with my dinner companion. We were seated at a two-top with barely held the food.
Will definitely be back but more likely mid-week rather than on a weekend
Salad and soup were not what I expected. Soup tasted canned. Used to ice berg lettuce with dressing already on it.
Waitress was overwhelmed had 2 large parties one being 20+ guest and another table of 10+ so our service lacked. She couldn’t figure out how to split the bill even given multiple chances which left myself to pay 2/3 of the bill just to avoid further confusion. Additionally we had to ask for the rest of our chicken to be brought to the table whereas we had 5 paying patrons and we’re given 6 half chicken breast brought to the table. So given this information being mostly negative I will say that the chicken and sides were very good just not worth $165.00 plus Tip.
Not the best experience. Waited 20 minutes for water and waited an hour for our cup of soup and buscuits. We didn’t get salad because the waitress said you were out. We almost walked out. We stayed and the food was great, but will not return because service was horrible.
Our waiter was great and the food was delicious!
We hadn’t been here since our kids were little. Food was good, service okay, value, over-rated. We love the idea of Hollyhock Hill. Love it as a family owned business with staying power. A family tradition creation, perhaps. We weren’t disappointed—just weren’t thrilled.
