I have lived in Austin off and on for almost 50 years. I had always wanted to experience The Hoffbrau but for whatever reason, hadn't. It was exactly what I expected. Was it Sullivan's or Bob's? No---but I didn't expect it to be. It was a throwback to an earlier Austin and I loved the total experience. My food was very good and my steak was cooked exactly as I had requested. I will be going back and it won't take 50 years for me to do so.
First went to Hoffbrau 40 yars ago after a Longhorn game with Dad...place doesn't look much different today. Really good steaks with minimal fanfare, decent prices. Place was quiet on a Wednesday night. It's no Sullivans, but good for a business discussion or quick meal or both.
I will be back again soon.
Disappointing that opentable would offer reservations for this dive. One of our steaks was inedible. We will never be back.
Delicious Rib Eeye. Great service. There was a problem with my reservation and Chris took car of it and made a pleasant experience.
Awesome experience... In the words of The Great Forest Gump "That's all that I got to say about that"......
I am a native austinite and hav been to this establishment quite a bit. And I must say that this experience left me very disappointed.
Disappointed in the tenderness of the New York strip. And it was too rare for medium rare. The lemon butter sauce was okay, but I would prefer no lemon. Went there because I hadn't been in 30 years, but not as good as I remembered it.
I got the Tbone and it was the worse steak I have had in a long time, tough, griddle and fat. Could only eat about 1/2.
This is a great, historic spot in Austin... not what you'd typically think on a steakhouse in terms of today's edifices to money (oak panels, mile long wine lists, etc), but a comfort food spot to get a great deal on a quality steak, just like mom used to make... or much, much, better.
Just another warm Texas Winter evening with a delicious floating Hoffbrau Ribeye.
Went this nite because I wanted to tell them that I had an OpenTable reservation for 1 as this was so completely different than my first time in '90 when our little Hoffbrau didn't even have menus, much less multiple items on a menu. Got a wry smile from my young lady who has been bringing me steaks for at least a few years now.
Harkening back, my '90 Hostess asked me what I wanted as I searched the table and her hands for a menu. After rolling her eyes at the Q, she told me I could have a T-bone, ribeye, or sirloin. Her eyes must have been in pain as they rolled again at the Q of what sides might be available. I was quite happy to have the potato wedges. Thought she was going to slap me silly and point to the door when I asked what dressing was available for the salad. Of course, oil & vinegar will be great!
Made it through my first initiation that day and haven't had a bad ribeye in the 16 years since. Please don't tell my doctor that I float the potato wedges in that oily buttery moat around the steak and occasionally dip my white and wheat bread on top of the steak and into the moat as well in complete disregard to her orders...
