Kacy was absolute perfection as per usual. The food is always made to absolute perfection. The A5 wagyu got a fantastic glow up with the new menu. As ALWAYS, the oysters are probably the best thing I have ever tasted. Make sure to get a fabulous glass of Krug with them. The pinot noir Toil 2019 from Willamette Valley is a fantastic pairing with A5 but as always, Casey and Hannah can guide you on exactly what you need. Everything moves like a dance in there. From the moment I enter to the moment I leave. The staff shows such real sense of anticipating every need of each guest. As always, 20/10 recommend.

Herons at The Umstead Hotel impresses from the moment you turn into the driveway. Wonderfully decorated throughout, one immediately knows their stay and/or dinner at Herons will be special. The decor throughout is exceptional and our table for 3, my wife Vicki, myself and my mom celebrating her 93rd birthday, was perfectly situated. Casey, our hostess for the evening was exceptional in every regard, making our evening memorable. First/Second Courses: Vicki's opening course was the Shrimp and Grits, which she declared to be one of the best courses ever; not just for this dish, but ever! The black truffle supplement a magical touch. Bravo! Mom opted for the Lobster and, she too, said the flavors and uniqueness were extraordinary, every bite to be savored. My Nigiri Omakase was as expected, each piece carefully selected and presented. At the next table the Oyster course had been selected and the presentation so impressive we all agreed it would be a top pick next time. Beverages: Pre-dining, our opening martini and Manhattan were fine, though we couldn't help remark that the martini glasses were indeed the smallest we had encountered at any restaurant. Odd. During dinner there was an impressive assortment of wines by the glass, the premium wines via Coravin a wonderful touch. While not purchasing by the bottle, the wine list is extensive and exceptionally curated. Entrées: Vicki and Mom had the Golden Chicken; I had the Tuna. While nice, Vicki didn't finish hers and I admit I found the ham hock dashi bath the tuna sat in to be an odd pairing and distraction from the balance of the entrée. Clearly much thought has been put into the first and second courses; so much so that we would consider an evening of simply 3 such courses each, rather than inclusion of an entrée. As it was Mom's 93rd birthday, they presented a lovely chocolate selection for her that was simply divine. As my mom said, this wasn't just dinner out, it was a true experience, one she'd happily repeat.

We go every year for our anniversary but they have since last year, started to do everything a la carte or you can do a chef tasting menu. A la carte kind of takes away from the magic of what the experience used to be and was confusing to us at first. The chef tasting menu is pre selected by the chef and probably more like what they used to do but we did not want those selections. They don’t bring you little Amuse-Bouches between courses anymore either. My beef tenderloin was “painted” with black garlic making it very salty. The main lobster course also had a sauce that made the whole dish very salty after a few bites. Was not nearly full at the end of my chosen 4 course meal compared to being stuffed in the past. Not sure if we will go back again next year for our anniversary given this experience this year.
