Hazel Southern Bar & Kitchen
The best fried chicken in SF! Gumbo however was bland. Ambience is loud, service is friendly, overall a fine restaurant.
From the warm greeting by host Aaron, to the very attentive wait staff bringing scrumptious food and drink, our dining experience was outstanding. We will continue to make this our pre-SHN tradition.
Great place. Good food. Nice service. Went before a concert at civic auditorium and it was nice and close. Fried chicken, collard greens, Mac and cheese, kale Caesar.. all yummy.. beignets were a must!!!!
Great for a party or celebration. Too loud for normal conversations.
Service was top notch from the host making sure we were happy with our seats to the wait staff food and drink service.
Good food and highly recommended.
They have a limited menu, but then were out of a few items and we were there right after opening. The biscuits were dry and cold. The fried chicken was delicious, but also not hot, just warm. The cocktails tasted watered down. For what we got, it was very expensive. $200 for 4 people and we only ordered 3 entrees. We did have drinks and shared a couple of appetizers from the happy hour menu.
Great service, interesting and tasty food, great cocktails, accommodating staff.
It's loud. We knew to expect that, but it just wasn't that much fun.
We liked the Vieux Carré and Gin Old Fashioned cocktails.
Our fried chicken was dry and rather bland, but the mac and cheese side was gooey and satisfying. The shrimp and grits dish was terrible — the shrimp was overcooked and rubbery, and the grits were stiff, slightly undercooked, clumped and bland, instead of smooth, creamy, cheesy, and rich. We ordered the blackened tofu, and received the blackened catfish instead. The error was corrected quickly. I don't think the waiter could hear us in the din. The beignets were big, but slighly nasty from stale oil. We wished we had saved the calories and gone to Bob's Donuts on Polk afterward, instead.
Never going back.
I/We LOVE Hazel's!!!! I refer EVERYONE there!!! We have several after work meet ups there and will continue to.
Great environment, great food, awesome and helpful staff!
Great food, cocktails, ambiance, service, value. Apparently Mr. Tipper's jazz club in the back gets the same kitchen too.
Nothing but a super loud sports bar with giant video screens everywhere. Very disappointed.
A great place to grab a bite before an Orpheum Play. Food is also exceptional.
Really good food in an upbeat setting! Delish fried chicken too. My husband had the ribs with pasta salad which seems like an odd pairing. Would have been better with the Mac and Cheese.
Would be nice to have some more vegetarian options. All food and drinks were great, but they took awhile to come out. Restaurant was a little understaffed.
Great food. Excellent Service. Staff accommodates needs and request. Beautiful interior
The food was extremely salty and the oxtail and grits had so much fat with very little meat. Overall the food was not the tastiest!
Awful food, but I’m from the south, and know what good fried chicken tastes like
Went with a party of 5, all ordered apps and mains + drinks. Total paid was pretty average for SF (i.e. - high). "Fried" chicken didn't look/taste fried at all. Dirty rice was so salty I couldn't eat it (and I use a ton of salt on my cooking at home). Mac&cheese was ok, though it's actually Rotini&Cheese. The waffle in the Chicken&Waffle was by far the best part. Wings were very good (we got buffalo). Overall, drinks were much better than the food.
I grew up eating southern cooking, and this was as close as you could get to my grandmother's food
Great vibe and also enjoyed Mr. Tipples! Dope set-up!
The food was great. Our reservation was right at opening time so the place was empty at first. Our reservation was for a birthday celebration and they printed a card with the birthday name. Service was a little slow and we had to keep asking for water refills but other than that it was a great experience. I would come again.
Loved it! The name didn't hurt either. The food was delicious and servings were generous. It was walking distance to our hotel and SHN Theater...couldn't have been better.
It looks like a fun place to hang out, drink, play pool and/or watch sports with your friends, but the food was basically bar food. The fried chicken was pretty good, but nothing was particularly flavorful. I wish I could leave a better review, but everything was just ok.
First time going to this restaurant, excellent experience will definitely go back again.
Good venue if you are going to see Hamilton to eat either before or afterwards.
Originally from Houston and I know good southern creole food.
First dinner visit. Few full entree size options. Menu showed “Shareables” which server said was the entrees. Sat in restaurant area at a 4 top. Service was more of a bar level, not a restaurant. Went through 3 different servers in the hour we were there. Very confusing. Had to call server over to reorder 2nd and 3rd drink rounds.
I’ll give it a a 2nd dinner try, but just barely. Need more complete entree choices and stop calling them shareables. Sounds more like appetizers.
My group had a great time and the host was soooo great! Super accommodating and friendly!
Good location, but not great service. Comments in reservations are never read, server forgot to place part of our order, drinks were empty and never asked for a refill, servers didn't give us enough place settings. A lot of little things that add up to an overall mediocre experience. Drinks and food itself are on point, but service could use work.
Excellent food, and excellent staff. The host at the door was very friendly and offered to take our picture for my dad’s birthday. The servers were very attentive, and checked on us periodically to ensure our glasses were always full. The food was delicious, big fan of the grits. Prices are a little high, but it is expected for the city. This is my third time here, and every time has been a great experience. Definitely coming back. It’s close proximity to SHN Orpheum makes it a perfect spot to grab a bite before the show.
Enjoyed the vibe & food/drinks here, but how can you serve beignets but not serve coffee? I mean seriously. It’s not that hard to have a pot on in the back, even if it’s not on the menu.
Great food and drinks!
It was delicious, we told the waiter in advance that we needed to make a show and he ensured we would be out in time, but at the same time the place seemed pretty understaffed. The food was amazing though, as were the house cocktails (we had a porch pounder and a peach drink). We ordered mostly tapas-style foods and it worked out really well, but at the end was kind of on the expensive side.
Fun place to have a meal. The food is excellent. Service is great. The decor is really fun and lively. If you’re looking for a place to have a nice conversation this is not the place for it cause the noise level is at max here but other than that, the rest is totally worth it.
the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. the food was INCREDIBLE - everything tasted delicious and there is nothing to complain about. 13/10 would recommend this place!
greatvhappy.great happy. love the wings and whiskey sourd. nice server too
A fun place to gather. The food was adequate, but nothing special. We had the gumbo, fried gator/okra, cajun catfish with cabbage, and fried chicken. The gumbo was a bit bland, and the fried chicken was edible (could have used more seasoning). Cool pool tables, and a jazz venue in the back. I'll be back!
Excellent service and great food. Went at 5:15 on a weekday. Pretty busy happy hour crowd. Place is a bit loud. Food very flavorful and done well. Would definitely go again
Loved the blackened shrimp and grits. My husband liked their fried chicken. We were seated right away, even though it was crowded. Large place and very energetic. Looks like it's a good after work crowd.
Our host was very accommodating to find us a 'quieter table'...food was good, portions seemed smaller which is unfortunate. Other than that it was good, as was the service.
