My wife and I had previously been there for Sunday Brunch about 5 years ago when this restaurant was called Choices by Shawn. We were disappointed with the food and never went back. We became interested in revisiting the restaurant when we saw that they changed their name to Hamrock's and had a new chef owner. We had the restaurant week lunch on Monday and were very happy with the food. The menu was creative, the food was excellent, and the portions were generous. We live in Fairfax and we will definitely be back again soon.
We dined during 2018 Restaurant Week
The service was very good and the food very nicely presented, fairly priced, and delicious. All three of us loved our tasty dishes so I highly recommend this delightful restaurant. Having their own parking in the middle of Fairfax City makes it so convenient.
Hamrock's is in an old house, with separate rooms for dining. It's not only charming, the food is excellent! The brussel sprouts and shrimp/duck/avocado appetizers were superb, and the crab cakes I had were mostly crab instead of filler. My dining companions had a filet mignon, a shrimp dish with orzo, and the swordfish special, and all three were pleased with their meals. We split carrot cake and chocolate cake for dessert, and our server brought us several dishes of house-made ice cream - all were delicious!
The only negative was that we had to ask for a server, after we had sat for about five minutes in a not terribly busy restaurant. But once our server started waiting on us, he was attentive and knowledgeable. I recommend Hamrock's - it's a somewhat hidden gem.
Waiter was harried but still good. Deviled eggs and bruschetta appetizers were very good as was the crab cakes entree. Duck entree was subpar. Hostess was very polite.
It was my first time at the restaurant, the wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, the food delicious and the presentation very impressive. I did a wine flight which was very good -- I will definitely go back again.
Not a good night. Service was off. I come here quite a bit and not the best experience. Was sat in the front of the house and traffic was super loud. Never got bread. Server was over sat and not sure he was told. He did a good job..but was trying to make up for other things. I still love this place and know it was an off night!!
I felt the food was great and the restaurant itself was charming. My only complaint which really cant be helped by the restaurant itself was the noise level when sitting on the porch due to the vicinity of the busy street. The next time we eat there, which I hope will be soon we will try sitting inside.
I love this restaurant. It is very quaint, charming and historic and the food is excellent. I ate dinner there this past winter and really enjoyed their wine flight. The salmon dish I had was very tasty and reasonably priced. I had lunch there today and had an delicious cucumber gazpacho soup and warm beet salad. It was hard to pick what to have as everything looked so good. I would highly recommend the Hamrock!
Had a very nice lunch at Hamrock's. The food was good (crab cakes and salad), the servers were attentive enough and didn't make us feel rushed at all. Cute old building with a nice porch for outdoor dining.
Great evening of delicious food, wonderful service and atmosphere
Hamrocks is a pleasant place to meet and eat. The food is always tasty and it’s nice to dine at a locally-owned restaurant.
The food and staff were beyond compare. What an anniversary! My wife had the fillet mignon and I had the salmon. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. We also had HOME-MADE maple walnut ice cream. WOW! I am so glad we went to Hamrock's!!!
Amazing food and Jeremy was an excellent server who knew the menu well. I highly recommend Hamrock’s!
Great gluten-free options for appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Enjoyable dining experience!
This was our first visit to Hamrock's. We had drinks outside, then had dinner indoors. The four of us thought the food was outstanding, and the service was very great. We all said "we will be back"!
Every dish was really really yummy. We hadn't even gotten through appetizers before we had decided we would return again!
Pleasantly surprised by dinner of this quality in the heart of Old Town Fairfax! The staff was just as amazing as the food. Great food and wine choices without needing to rob a bank. My wife and I already have plans to return...
Attentive staff. Good food and excellent service. My guests really enjoyed the ambiance of this historic home.
Fantastic service and food. The best part... most of the menu was GF and amazing!
Beautiful classic restaurant, located on the corner of a busy street in Fairfax. Easy parking right on the property. Several outdoor dining tables placed on the deck. The night was a perfect night for eating outside. The menu was ample with plenty of drink options. Service was prompt and very friendly. It was a bit noisy towards the front entrance due to the traffic right on the street, but the venue itself was calm and quiet on the deck and inside. Great decor inside. Must be a great place to visit later at night or during fall/winter, since it is an antique house converted to a restaurant.
Highly recommended for a date or dinner with friends.
Very nice atmosphere and staff. Food presentation was great. Great if you love wine, but not if you or a beer drinker for cocktails. Very limited choices!
We went out for a nice brunch after church and loved Hamrocks. The food was delicious, especially the fresh fruit and popovers, and the decor was beautiful. We will definitely be back.
Loved the wine flights! All four of us purchased one! Great menu. Nice table for 4!
We had a great time celebrating my wife’s birthday dinner with her parents. Cameron was our server and she was very helpful and fun! Our dinners were all perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. They topped off the night with giving a special dessert on the house to my wife for her birthday! We will definitely be going back!
Brought our two toddlers to this restaurant at 5pm on a Saturday and was pleasantly surprised by how kid-friendly everything was! The food and wine were both delicious and it was nice to eat at an adult restaurant that also accommodates kids!
Always a great meal and service. Love this place!
We took out a co-worker as a farewell here. Our meals were great (especially enjoying the extra blueberry muffins!). One in our party though noted it took a while to simply get a glass of water (those who didn't order wine or soda). Otherwise, we enjoyed the outdoor seating on the quieter side of the restaurant (away from the street), where we could have a nice, relaxed conversation.
We have been several times as a couple and with larger groups and have always had a great meal, service and atmosphere. We will definitely be returning.
Jeremy a polite attentive waiter; food delicious and reasonable. So glad to have you in the neighborhood.
We went at the suggestion of a friend for my (adult) daughter's birthday brunch. While the food was very good, nothing stood out as "the best ever" - my standard for 5 stars (within a category). We began with the fried green tomatoes and the deviled eggs. Both were very good, but not sublime. She had the chicken and waffles and said they were very good, but that she's had better. My wife had the Stuffed French toast and finished it - a testimony to both nice portion sizes and it being very, very good. I had the potato cakes with poached eggs - also quite good. my sons had the Jalapeno cheddar french toast (which got a rave from #1 son) and the crab cakes benedict (also remarked upon with favor from #2 son).
However, our server was the true standout of the meal. He was in exactly the right spot at every moment of the meal. The meal was paced perfectly. He was helpful with menu questions and with everything else.
The dining room was also very nice, and we had our room to ourselves. The tables seemed nicely spaced everywhere, a rarity these days.
All in all, a very favorable experience.
(and as natives of McLean, we appreciate the owner's start at Three Pigs Barbecue for emotional connection).
A spur-of-the-moment, let's-go-someplace-different-tonight kind of date. We enjoy going out and having a nice meal, but tend to stay with those places we know. Decided to spice it up a bit and were very happy with our choice.
We had a glass of wine, appetizers --me with the BEST MINI-CRABCAKES EVER (said my wife) and she with the Fried Green Tomatoes. I moved onto a salmon with salad, topped with a basil cream, and she had the grilled salmon. Then the lemoncello cake for dessert.
We will be going back, and taking some friends.
What they need? I would like a cocktail. The wine selection is broad, but to really round out the evening...
Surprisingly good! Very good food and service, and excellent and affordable wine list.
The service was marginal at best. Delayed, disjointed (brought wrong dishes to tables) and not professional in general. The restaurant has a very casual feel when it seems to desire more.
The food was ok. We had Brussels sprout and cauliflower appetizers and various entrees. The food didn’t distinguish itself. There was no “ah ha” moment to flavors that were memorable.
Gnocchis were the best I have ever had!
Wonderful place, love the food and atmosphere. I will go again and again.
Hamrock’s is a qaint historic house converted to a restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is delicious! We sat on the front porch to celebrate our 37th anniversary and the service was very friendly and helpful. The only down side, and not a big deal, is the proximity to the street which can be fairly busy.
We dine out fairly frequently so I was looking for someplace unique and new to us without having to trek all of the way into DC. It also had to be special enough to be a worthy of "special occasion" status (my wife's birthday). I found Hamrock's on Open Table and, based on the description, decided to give it a try. I am not sure how we have overlooked it before, but it was a real find! It is located in the middle of downtown Fairfax city in a charming, historic home that dates back to the 1800's. The food and service were great and we loved the look and feel. Portions were generous with a nice mix of creativity and selection. Hamrock's will definitely be high on our list of "go to" locations in the future!
We had Father’s Day dinner and I would highly recommend it. We can’t to go back.
Beautiful ambiance in a historic home with wrap around porch and outdoor seating available. Friendly and accommodating staff. Enjoyed the avocado bruschetta and potato hash Benedict. Three mimosa flavors including peach mango. Mini blueberry muffins and popovers brought to your table complimentary.
